Look Up In the Sky... IT'S A BIRD!

Here we go.  Greg Bird has been called up to back up Tex at 1B and ARod.  Frankly, I was expecting the return of Refsnyder in the next few days, but I guess that could still happen.  But this is great news.  Greg has lost significant time to injuries during his development, but this young man can just plain HIT.   He will go nuts if they ever make it back to Yankee stadium.   It's really starting!

That's great but he needs to play everyday but wont

They need a starting 2b way more than a backup 1b/DH. Bird's going to fill the Garrett Jones role on the bench, which is unfortunate for a young guy with promise. Front office must really think Refsnyder is a garbage player.

Yeah Refsnyder doesn't have much of a future here and I suspect he gets traded along with Sanchez in the offseason.

Don't want to see it happen but likely will

Feels like Tex and ARod need time off since they're both in the tank. I'd guess he's going to get plenty of AB's. They can't trade Sanchez because he's become great. And Hal seems to still like Refsnyder, thus, we should be seeing him soon.

At least it shows some recognition of the seriousness of the problem, but OF and 2B is where PT is available.

And even if they thought Refs was "garbage" (despite the absurdity given his age), Ryan and Drew are less than that.

I think the FO likes Refsnyder I think Girardi is the problem there, and really is not the guy to supervise the wave of talent that is on the way and emerging.

No, he isn't.

I think they will sit Teix and A-Rod about twice a week, assuring Bird of four starts every week. That should be a top-down plan, not subject to managerial interference, or affected by any adjustment Bird may go thorough, and then they could reassess in a month.

If Texeira does sit I would imagine we will see hI'm come in for defense late in the game as Bird's defense is average at best.

If all these reports on Girardi are true, I don't really trust him to give Bird enough at-bats to warrant a promotion. So, I'm against this move.

What would it take to get him fired? It may well be worth any short-term pain.

Stephen Drew has 489 PAs with a .177/.245/.345 line for the Yanks. His 65 OPS+ is 17th worst in NYY history (PA>450)

This is on the Yankees, not Refsnyder.

Lawyer. Only 17th worse? I would have thought he is closer to the top 5 (bottom 5?)!!!

Personally, I applaud the move to get some of the kids in there. There is a complete lineup fail right now, and maybe the excessive playing time these guys received all year is coming back to bite them. A-Rod has hardly played the past 2 seasons. Tex played quite a bit last year, but was hurt, and missed almost all of 2013. Both guys are dragging right now. I would bet their bat speed is way down from June.

Will Bird get a shot 4 times a week, in the scenario that Lawyer laid out above? Or will they waste his time here, when he needs as many ABs as he can get, to make up for his own past injuries?

One more thing. Maybe they should send Gardner for a 2 week DL trip, and call up Gamel for a stint in LF!!!

At 11:15 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think it would be Heathcott coming back, not Gamel. But maybe he'll be rewarded.

George took care of his children very well:

The Steinbrenner family has sold three Ocala hotels to a Canadian-based company for more than $30.7 million.

The recent sale of the Courtyard by Marriott, the Residence Inn and the Fairfield Inn & Suites means the Kinsman Hotel Association is out of the Ocala hotel market. Company president Don Steimle says the corporate office will remain in Ocala.

Goody goes back to SWB so Bird can play. Diego Moreno was transferred to the 60-day DL.

Capuano is still on this team, haha.

I wondeer how Teflon's wife feels about Crapu. NTTAWWT

Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Brett Gardner LF
Alex Rodriguez DH
Carlos Beltran RF
Brian McCann C
Chase Headley 3B
Greg Bird 1B
Didi Gregorius SS
Stephen Drew 2B

RHP Nathan Eovaldi

I'll reiterate. Didi should be batting at or near the top of the order to get an extra AB.

I hope they're not just calling him up so Tex can get a day... That would be very Girardi, and the whole Refs thing is on him.

I heard part of the manager's weekly show with WFAN.

Joe Benigno asked if he ever thought about doing what Billy Martin once did to try to get his team out of an offensive slump: pull a lineup out of a hat.

Joe Teflon said he didn't think that would go over well with today's player, and that got me thinking, although clearly this is speculation.

Most workplace environments are about politics to some extent, more specifically relationships and stature.

We have heard veteran players talk about how much they like playing for Tef, and why shouldn't they, since he absolutely defers to players.

So this is just one more example of that.

I think it shows how the manager builds his power base in order to keep his job.

IOW: You can't fire me, the players love me.

More examples:

Jennings and others have said he would be reluctant to put CC in the pen, even when he was at his worst, because of how it would be received in the clubhouse.

Similar things have been reported about benching Drew.

This is a team in transition. As such, being afraid to bench even terrible players can pose a serious threat to the implementation of that plan.

As I have said, Cashman stood up to the icon that was Joe Torre. Girardi is no icon. This should be a lot easier, if he is so inclined.

Is he?

If Joe Girardi is holding the team hostage to the point where they can't replace a guy batting below the Mendoza line with a promising prospect, then there is no hope for this team.

Every time Drew hits a HR, I cringe.

Two hard outs for Bird so far.

So glad to see these guys getting to the Majors. I agree sanchez/Refs should not be traded. Refs will have 2 B NEXT YEAR, drew will not be here.

At 5:56 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think Refs will be back soon.

At 6:16 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I'll believe it when I see it. Just don't have any faith in this team having faith in the "non-untouchables."
