Severino Was Impressive - Yanks Not So Much
Tonight, Luis Severino became the first pitcher in AL history to debut with less than 2 hits, 0 walks and 7 or more K's. It wasn't enough as Chase Headley made a terrible error behind him to set up a run, and the Yanks couldn't score any more than one against a knuckleballer with a 7+ ERA in road starts coming into tonight. Just a despicable effort by the team.
Meanwhile, Severino was good. He got squeezed a bit, and his secondary stuff wasn't sharp early, but he got more confortable as the game wore on and all of his stuff started to play up. The change acts like splitter, and he changed shapes on his slider, which can look like a cutter or a slider depending on how he throws it. The fastball was 95, 96 and 97. He's earned more starts and could be the best pitcher on the staff as the season wears on. Oh. and he also looked very good fielding his position. There's a lot to be excited about.
And on the day that they brought back Jones to back-up Tex, Greg Bird hit two homers in AAA.

Severino was awesome. He did seem a little affected by the Big Fool from his first AB.
As I said on the other thread before Girardi made the move, I hated pitching hitting McCann for a hot Didi who can how hit to all fields. Hat-ed it.
I really think Girardi has no feel for the game.
Didi had been our hottest hitter... instead he went with the injured guy. Not a fan of Girardi at all.
Mateo with four hits in his High-A debut, so that's a positive.
Bird also had a triple to go along with his two jacks tonight.
Depressing about Jones. Is he signed after this year?

I believe he is a FA after this season.
Yeah, this is it for him. Still, gotta wonder what some of the kids will have to do.
