Yanks Win

Ivan Nova looked much better and the Yanks won easily today.   Nova's velo is starting to climb up into his pre-injury levels.  This of course helps set up his breaking stuff and it did today.   Ellsbury lead off the game with a homer,  and the rest of the team followed his lead as they crushed one of their presumtive trade targets.  Tex hit his 29th and the bottom of the lineup continued to rake. Drew  has almost crossed the interstate.  They went 6-4 on the trip and will now stay on Eastern Time for the rest of the season.   Tomorrow's a well earned off day.  Let's see if they make anymore roster moves.

LHP Chris Capuano: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 3/3 GB/FB — 33 of 50 pitches were strikes, plus he picked a runner off first … in case you missed it earlier, he cleared waivers and accepted his outright assignment after being designated for assignment the other day … I wonder if we’re going to see him again when rosters expand in September - See more at: http://riveraveblues.com/2015/08/dotf-gamel-bird-judge-austin-lead-way-aaa-win-125444/#sthash.kjy9u12O.dpuf

Probably a promise sealed with a kiss

A lot can still happen between now and September.

I would imagine that they won't add him back to the 40 unless they are really desperate and don't have to designate someone else off.

Stottlemyre, I would normally agree with you, but this team's had an odd love affair with some decidedly mediocre at best players this season. So while I don't really expect it, it wouldn't at all surprise me if he does make it back to the 40-man.

I was half-kidding, but I would love to know why they thought $5m made baseball sense. They more than doubled his salary, after putting up a 91 ERA+ for them.

Back to things that should matter, they need to send Pineda to a kinesiologist. He will likely recover from this injury and pitch again, but how can you invest in an asset that has made 32 starts since 2011? And despite some stellar moments has had a league average year, overall.

Also, SSS alert (21 PA), but Montero: .389 .476 .667 1.143

This trade may really be the wait five years exemplar.

Finally, Beltran is falling apart. I would platoon Ackley and Young for now.

I'd DL Beltran and bring up Slade Heathcott for the platoon.

That would be great.

I hope Beltran goes in the offseason. Really don't want him being the reason Judge can't play if he proves he's ready.

Does the CBA permit buyouts at less than face value?

I was thinking more along the lines of a trade to an AL team that needs a DH. I think he could thrive not having to play the field every day, a la A-Rod. Looking at Cots, he has "no-trade protection," so I wonder what the details are.

I think A-Rod is unique because of the health of his hips. Teix, I have no idea why this is his best year since 2009, and really, I doubt that anyone else does either, inside or outside of baseball.

But if some team sees that as a possibility for Beltran, then maybe that would work.

I think the Yankees' primary offseason task will be to figure out a way to hedge against a decline by either or both of A-Rod and Teix.

And of course, hope that this taught them the value of impact bats, not big hairy monsters.

Teixeira can be explained by having a healthy wrist finally. A-Rod is a physical freak who takes really good care of himself, had a year off and is DHing. (And, unfortunately, given his history, you can't help but speculate if he's still using something extra, though I personally think he's clean this year.)

Beltran's problem is that he doesn't hit near enough to make up for the fact that he's an absolute butcher in the field. Chris Young, by contrast, at least destroys lefties and can play any of the three outfield spots, albeit he's limited in terms of defensive prowess. It's why I'd advocate signing him to another two years in the offseason.

The biggest concern in the offseason will likely be the gradual easing in of the likes of Bird, Judge, Severino and maybe others. Let's face it, part of the reason there's been an emphasis on player development in recent years is Hal's obsession in getting under the $189M mark. The wildcard is, of course, Girardi, who's allegedly in love with veterans to a fault.

Mike K -- What gives me hope is that they did DFA the guy in the first place. I don't see too many candidates on the 40 that they could comfortably play the DFA and outright game with. Unless someone goes on the 60-day DL or they trade someone on the 40, I think it's unlikely we see him back. We'll see. Cheers!

Mike

He hasn't put up a .900 OPS since '09.
