Yanks: Deadline Day
Alright, the Non-Waiver trade deadline is at 4pm EST today. That's not too far off, but far enough that the Yanks can get as much done as they want to.
Meanwhile, it would probably be easier for the Yanks to have made trades during this period if their entire second tier of starting minor league pitchers wasn't out with TJS or whatever in the case of Ian Clarkin. And as I've said, I would not trade Sanchez because Torrens is out with a serious injury. So as much as the other teams want the Yankeee prospects, a whole tier of them is out injured.
Beyond that, it looks like a third wipeout reliever today, and maybe a bat or a starter.

Pitchers are fragile. Young pitchers are especially fragile. As long as the Yankees are pitching-centric under Cashman and Girardi, I really don't understand the idea that they are really good at their jobs.
I dont have that idea. But I do think there are people in the organization who are very good at their jobs.
I don't think Cashman is baseball dumb; far from it. I also think he's hindered by ownership/Levine at times. And he's not wrong in wanting dominant pitching — the problem is, as you said Lawyer, it's not exactly reliable as far as health goes, and I do feel he undervalues offense.
As I stated previously, though, my main problem with him is his allowing of Girardi to have his comfort players (Drew, Ryan, Esmil Rodgers and Capuano) instead of constructing the best possible roster and the lack of an extended shot he's given youth in recent years. But the latter might be changing if the tweets about them planning to use Mitchell/Severino/Warren to shore up the rotation is any indication.
On to the actual deadline day itself, I really don't know what to expect. I do like that they've shown restraint. I think the roster needs tweaks more than major moves, and they have pieces in their farm system to make those tweaks.
The Yankees are still looking at the market for starters, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post, but “feel doubtful” of getting anything done on that front. New York feels comfortable with its internal options to fill in for the just-DL’ed Michael Pineda, he adds. That may be true, of course, but we had heard of interest in a rotation addition prior to Pineda’s injury, so it seems unwise to count New York out of the market until the final bell has sounded.

Again, why couldn't they keep the Pineda injury quiet for another day.
It would be no different than saying that Bubba Crosby is their starting CF, which some fans still give Cashman credit for, in terms of creative use of language.
Mike
If you want to see an ownership that hinders their GM, look at the Mets.
Net/net, Cashman has it pretty freakin' good.
Pineda was supposed to start yesterday, there was no way to pretend Pineda'd gained weight and turned left handed last night.
Hal has behaved foolishly with the draft and IFA over his tenure and that more than anything is why we've had roster problems.
You just say that he has a tired arm. Alternatively, they already said they were looking for a way to reduce his IP.
I am not saying Hal is perfect. I am saying that the gives his GM more advantages than most, and they are not being fully exploited.
The only advantage Hal can give a GM is MONEY. That's it. When he cut the money off on a amateur side, he screwed up the team, big time. The old development team would have looked a lot better if the scouts had been able to spend in the draft and sign guys like Sano in IFA.
And we've seen him pass on EVERY CUBAN.
That is a huge advantage. Give Alderson another $100m and the Mets would be scary.
The necessity for Cubans is pressing because they have't developed a position player or #3 or better starter since, ok, Wang (if not, then Pettitte). That is crazy. Nor a position player since Gardner. That's even crazier.
This is not an organization that has been well run over the last 10 years.
They won in 2009 after spending like half a billion dollars.
Unfortunately, their spending spree prior to 2014, was much less thought-out.

Source: #Yankees are team in hottest pursuit of #Padres’ Kimbrel.
Tying it together, but for Hal's deep pockets, Kimbrel is not a consideration.
Yeah, but those deep pockets could have been used to help mitigate the lack of development by signing more high-end amateur talent. That's not to excuse the development team for the prospects they did have who didn't develop, but at least that issue seems to have been fixed.
I'm with Phil on this one. Hal's pockets may be deep, but he's baseball stupid. It's ironic the team is pursuing Chapman now when it should have just signed him after he defected. And I will never be convinced that passing on Moncada was anything other than Hal/Levine saying, "But Brian, he's not MARKETABLE," no matter how many times Cashman takes one for the team on that.
If they include Mateo in a Kimbrel trade then I'm going to be pissed.

More on Kimbrel: Now told #Yankees’ talks for him broke down yesterday and have not revived today. #Marlins’ Capps an option, as others say.
Mike
So Mike, how does Cashman escape any responsibility for the lack of development?
And why don't we believe Cashman when he says Moncada wasn't worth the extra $5m or $10m, but then went out and gave it to Drew.
It seems like people want to blame the owner for everything wrong.
I mean, we believe Cashman when he railed against both Sorianos.
He can't have it both ways.
Pass on this shit:
The Padres are trying to attach the contract of second baseman Jedd Gyorko as they discuss trades for their starting pitchers, tweets Jon Morosi of FOX Sports. Gyorko is owed more than $33MM through 2019.
LiNJ, when George was around you liked Cashman. What's been the biggest variable?
On the Sorianos, my theory is after all of that ownership and Cashman got together and said no matter the internal disagreement, we're not advertising our GM being against a move that ownership pushed. That's why I think Cashman is just covering for Hal/Levine on the Moncada sweepstakes, though there's also the guy who got fired over that mess to consider (forget his name).
Spending on the likes of Drew is what I do blame Cashman for: Letting Girardi have his toys at the expense of constructing the best possible roster. And ultimately, the monumentally stupid decision to send Refsnyder back down in favor of Drew/Ryan is on him, as is the decision to keep CC in the rotation despite all evidence that he's done as a starter.
On the developmental side, I do blame him on the lack of development since 2006 when it comes to the guys they did draft/sign out of IFA, but to the team's credit, they at least seem to have identified that as a problem and have work to correct it.
His performance. IOW, he talked the talk back then, but when it came time to implement, he has repeatedly under performed.
Remember when he said the "Big Three" starters were going to negate the need to sign FA pitchers?
OK, it's unrealistic to think that all three would be rotation staples, but none have. The way they mishandled Joba was horrendous.
Although the Montero trade may seem to be in his favor at this point, I never liked the thinking behind it. Their offense has been aging for years, save for this unbelievable resurgence by Teix and A-Rod, so rather than trading Montero in a package for a young bat, he traded him for a pitcher who had minor league injuries, and has had even more in NY.
He seems to love Girardi. You don't.
So that's a sampling of why I changed my opinion.

There's also a #mystery team on Kimbrel competing with #Yankees. But NYY still very much in the mix there
ugh, I read the Yankees may be willing to give up Mateo now ...
There's no way they're giving up Mateo for a reliever. None. Maybe in some bigger deal with more parts and a big win but not for a reliever.
2 hours left.
Billy, if you're around, how long before Randy Levine swoops in with a red cape and saves the Yankees from their "inactivity"? -_-
Yanks have DFA'd Garret Jones.
Reinstated Slade from the 60 day and assigned him to SWB.
Bad news is Capuano is still around. Outrighted to SWB.
They could have named him Saturday starter...
90 minutes left.
I think Mitchell goes Saturday, hence him not coming in yesterday.
I think so, too, but don't trust Girardi.
Got money from an Asian team to release Esmil Rogers -- so that problem's gone!
Re: Rogers: OH THANK GOD.
One hour left and not only is everyone safe but Jones and Rogers are out of our lives!
Sounds like the Yanks are saying there were no Kimbrel talks...
Randy Levine may look and act like Harpo Marx, but his insistence on signing Soriano as another reliever, is the only reason they made the playoffs the year Mariano hurt his knee.
I wonder if he is too moderate to work for Trump.
In case that's unclear, by that I mean he has worked in politics, has made a lot of money in the private sector, so maybe he would like to get back in. And since he worked for Rudy, in terms of today's Republicans, he is a moderate, while this version of Trump isn't.
That way the Yankees are free of at least one problem.
No politics here.
Sorry, I was just providing context.
Although, you may recall I was once accused here of watching Fox News. :)
12 minutes and nothing's cooking.
Everyone is now saying Yankees would be willing to include Mateo in a Kimbrel deal. Either it's for more than Kimbrel, they're wrong or someone in the Yankees front office is dumb.
It's over. Thank goodness. Impact players were too pricey. Now they actually need to call up their assets, though.
I'll put up a new post in a few minutes, just want to make sure we didn't do anything.
I think the news could come in after 4 PM ....
I know this is more of a Yankee thread but ..
the Mets acquire slugger Yoenis Cespedes just before the major league trade deadline, sending two minor-leaguers to Detroit in exchange, Jon Heyman confirms.....
From John Heyman at 3:38 PM
yankees havent heard back from padres on kimbrel in many hours. yanks would have included mateo to get a deal.... glad we did not move Mateo
New post is up.
