Yanks and the 40 Man Roster

As we get down to the deadline it's important that the Yanks remember to trade more off their 40 man roster than they add onto it.   The Yanks will have a bunch of minor league players to add after the season, so any room they can find now would really help come winter.  Of course DFA's will happen between now and then and those will help, too.

The easy 3: Crap, Drew, Ryan. Garrett Jones too, really.

Zobrist to the Royals. Another temptation avoided. So far so good.

Looks like it might be Prado again.

Which I would be fine with, as long as it didn't prevent Refs from getting a shot.

Prado would be Cashman stupid.

He has an 88 OPS+. Refs could do that within a two weeks.

My prediction is that they trade for Samardzija. Off year (maybe) and an impending FA, so they think they can pay less and fix him, the lamentable GM has wanted him for a while, and it fits with his and his manager's wrong-headed view of what wins baseball games.

He has decent numbers against lefties, and could spell multiple players. If it's between Refsnyder playing and him, of course I'd choose Refsnyder.

If they platoon him, Drew still gets a majority of AB.

Factor in the $11m he is owed next year and the chances of Refs playing are about the same as those that he won't be traded.

People can disagree obviously, but I think it would be incredibly dumb.

Diego Moreno is up. I'm assuming he's replacing Nick Goody, whom Girardi refused to pitch. He has a 2.18 ERA in Scranton.

I hadn't looked at OPS+ for a while:

A-Rod 152
Teix 149
Beyond awesome considering how long it’s been since they were forces.

Gardner 130
Pretty close to awesome given his skillset.

McCann 114
Declining some. It’s good, no doubt, but I think if Murphy played every day he would be over 100 and on the ascent, better defensively, and obviously MUCH cheaper.

Ellsbury 105
The injuries are hurting him badly, which is the story of his career. When healthy, he is more fun for me to watch than any player on the team, but that’s not often enough given the contract.

Beltran 100
Whatever.

Headley 97
Whatever

Gregorius 77
He’s getting better even if he is the only young player allowed to do so.

Dante Bichette left his game in Tampa after hitting a homerun. He was replaced by Angelo Gumbs...

Crap is crap. But it doesn't matter because Joey G. doesn't care.

Imagine what some charity could have done with the $5m they set on fire.

Tony Renda left his game in Trenton.

So really, I don't mind if they are throwing this game. I do mind that he is on the roster since opening day when everyone with a working brain knew he sucked.

At 6:03 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

He is evidence of what is wrong with how they operate. Younger, better, often cheaper players aren't getting a shot because Girardi loves his guys and Cashman won't confront him about it.

At 6:08 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

From all we know Cashman likes him too. The roster spots become more valuable now; no more bullshit time to go

But maybe all the runs will give them a reprieve

At 6:12 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

That should be for all we know

Marchand says the plan was to start Mitchell before he got hurt.

At 6:22 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

It's impressive that Didi is no longer pulling everything

At 6:23 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Yeah I knew that about Mitchell it's just that Crap shouldn't be on the roster

At 6:24 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

LMAO, I bet CC wishes he had this run support.

This is one of those you can't predict baseball, games

At 6:41 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Can they now sell high on some of the spare parts that are doing well tonight ?

At 7:41 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Doningo Acevedo left his latest start after 56 pitches, though he was dominating.

At 7:42 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Domingo, that is.

At 8:10 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

This game is like that Bugs Bunny cartoon where there's an endless assembly line of hitters rounding the bases.

The Yankees really should DL Ellsbury.

At 8:23 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Mike. I'm at the train station, what are you seeing with regard to Ells?

At 8:36 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Not watching the game, just a general observation given his recent struggles.
