Yanks Win

The Yanks are now 50-0 when leading after 8.   And their 6 great guys did it again.   6 great?  There are three pair.   Ellsbury and Gardner produced a run in the bottom of the first, Tex then scored Gardy with his 24th homer.  Later, ARod hit his 20th.   So that's why we got from the 4 good guys on offense.  Both speed guys and both power guys scored.   Then Filth Merchants did their thing, though Miller did give up a homer to Davis who just dropped his bat on the slider.  Still, Yanks had a 2 run lead and he K'd the next guy.   It would be nice to have more guys, but it would be nicer still to get them from the farm.  Nova looked good, too, btw, which is encouraging and threw a couple of nasty curves.   Still doesn't have his top velo back, but if he can get the curve, slider and sinker all going at once, he can be very valuable.

Teix and A-Rod continue to be the reason they remain contenders.

And Betances and Miller.

True, but I think I take them for granted because their contribution was expected

Ellsbury and Gardy have also been great.

McCann has also been good, though more walks overall would be nice. And the SP for the most part has been solid as a unit.

If they do trade for anything, it should still be a bat.

Mike F says Cashless loves Prado. Where would that leave Refs? No place good

Mike F doesn't know anything.

He doesn't know baseball but he has been right on the GM's mindset before. He kisses hugs ass enough to get scoops.

Prado has decent numbers against lefties (.297/.328/.453/.781) and can play third as well as second. In fact, I think he's been Miami's primary third baseman this season. I wouldn't mind reacquiring him — I wanted him to man third for the next two years instead of giving that dumb contract to Headley — as long as it didn't cost anything significant. In other words, no trading Gary Sanchez for him.

As for Refsnyder, they've already shown they're not willing to give youth a chance this season, so best thing to do is make smart short-term deals that don't surrender assets and hope the team makes the playoffs and gets hot.

The problem with reacquiring Prado is that they have Headley for another 3 years and will have a hard time moving him. They would lock in a mediocre infield for the foreseeable future.

I don't know what they're going to do, I'm just throwing it out there, but the way they do things it wouldn't surprise me if they make a move that I hate

And for all the recent success, Didi has resumed his offensive slide. I'm OK with that; that's what development often looks like. All I ask is that their home grown kids get the same patience. But they haven't since Cano. Gardner, for example, was yanked around for a while, although to be fair, I think it was impossible for ANYONE to see what type of hitter he would become. That is not true of Refs. Considering he knew he could be sent down at any time unless he performed, his defense was pretty damn good here.

Stot is right.

I just heard Joey on the radio waxing poetic about the defense in the game yesterday, how it is so important, that it doesn't matter what inning it takes place in, that defense saves runs and games.

1) My point above was not to overlook or minimize Betances/Miller and Gardner/Ellsbury. They have been very, very good, however, they were expected to be really good.

The unexpected force has been A-Rod/Teix. No one could have foreseen this level of production. Without it, they are .500, at best.

2) When you have that kind of dynamic 3-4 punch, every other factor that contributes to wins is magnified.

Smart people recognize that.

Stupid people, who are still trying to justify the importance of a very mediocre baseball career, skew the importance of the minor factors like defense by terrible offensive players.

3) There is no reason to think that Refs could not make every defense play that gives Joey a woody.

4) If defense is so important, why is Beltran ever on the field. Why have they tolerated Headley's terrible defense for so long? Right, money trumps everything.

Again, unless it's for an impact bat, forget it.

Cashman is not very bright, so I don't have much hope.

That's why I believe they will give Judge, Severino, and Bird a chance, when they actually give them as much chance to fail as they have Didi.

90% of what they have done beyond Stick's core is the result of spending money.

Their farm system was at this point in like 2008, and they have nothing to show for it.

They would probably trade Refs in a heartbeat a long as Drew bat over .100.

Astros got Kamir.

One bullet dodge.

Of course, it they had bought low on him a couple of years ago, that would have been a different story, but they weren't interested then.

Yankees pounding the Birds today. 9-1 at this writing, end of 5 1/2 innings. Gardy, A-Rod, Tex and Beltran are all o fer. But Ellsbury is playing like a man possessed, 3-3 with a HR, 2B and 4 RBIs. The bottom part of the lineup, with Headley, Murphy and Didi, all have multi-hit games, and the other RBIS. Well, Drew has a hit and one of the RBIs, but who cares.

Oh yeah. Tanaka has a 2 hitter going. Only blemish is a Davis HR in the 2nd. 4 Ks, and he's at 74 pitches through 6.
