Yanks Win

Yanks won today.  Or so my sports alert tells me.  Apparently Tex hit a homer in the 8th inning of a 1-1 game and the bullpen did the rest.  Sabathia didn't get shelled, and for some reason Girardi wasn't moved to leave him in too long for a change.  It would be a huge help to the Yanks if CC can have a strong stretch run.  And it would be as big a help if Girardi figured out he's no longer a 7 and 8 inning guy.  Neither CC nor  Felix figured in the decision and Betances got the win.

If CC stays in the rotation then who would leave if they made a trade? Nova or Eovaldi obviously, but that would impose a future cost.

At 1:17 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Now, if they called up Severino, then the future cost calculus becomes more balanced.

I imagine Eovaldi or Nova will be headed someplace in a trade for a different starter.

At 1:31 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I could live with that. The issue would be who else is in any package.

I still don't trust CC to be consistently effective.

At 2:52 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Neither do I, but I don't think anyone is taking that deal off our hands.

Good thing I don't get worried about these short season appearances by draft picks, because Finley and Degano have been pretty awful.

From LoHud:
Girardi indicated that the decision to send Rob Refsnyder down had a lot to do with ongoing belief that Stephen Drew can be an productive hitter. “He had a pretty good month in June when you look at his OPS numbers,” Girardi said. “July, he hasn’t played a lot, the numbers are OK. Since that time that we gave him three or four days off in Oakland, he’s kind of turned it around a little bit. We just felt that, we’re in first place, and Stephen Drew has played a part in that, and we play a lot of games at this ballpark, and this ballpark is favorable to him, and we were going to stay with him for now.”

This team. This fricking team. Leadership literally has zero self-awareness as to how dumb it looks to everyone else in baseball. There isn't a single team other than the Yankees who would have kept Refsnyder over Drew at this point.

At 4:24 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Drew's June numbers, BTW: .230/.310/.514/.824. Basically, his numbers were inflated by six home runs and three doubles. Which is why he'd be a good bench player, not a starter.

At 4:45 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

If that were true Refs would not have been called up. He is making shit up.

Unless they have no plan and just go on minute to minute feelings.

Onley has the Yanks on Kimbrel and Chapman.

Neither would end well with holding on to prospects

At 9:48 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

It's not happening.

At 6:00 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The Yankees are pretty much boxed in because of the dumb contracts they gave Beltran and Headley, the two position they could use an upgrade at.

As mentioned on the other thread, yes, they could add a starter, although cost/benefit, none will be better than Severino over even a medium term time horizon, and since they probably aren't moving CC out of the rotation, they would have to move Nova or Eovaldi in the trade.

Nova is coming off TJ, has never been a consistent starter, and will be 29 at the start of next season.

Eovaldi could appeal to some team I guess.

Roberts: .237 .300 .360 .659

Drew: .181 .255 .369 .625

Girardi is an embarrassment to the pinstripes.

What does this even mean? Does seniority trump ability?

On Severino

“We’ve got a strong comfort level on how he’s been managed,” Cashman said. “I have no worries about his innings.”

While Cashman didn’t rule out the idea of using Severino in the big leagues this season, it seems he doesn’t feel the need to make that move at the moment.

“Even if I did,” Cashman said. “I’ve got (Adam) Warren who’s done great for us in that rotation, and I’ve got (Bryan) Mitchell who’s got more experience.”

FWIW, the word from writers, like Feinsand, is that the Refs demotion was made by the crappy GM, not the crappy manager.

At 4:41 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Yeah, because he wants all of his "assets" until the trade deadline. Or something.

He's not stupid. What he is, is infected by whatever nonsense logic this team uses to run itself. He's so different from the Cashman of a decade ago.

At 5:12 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

That's what he said on the Kay show. He said he didn't want to DFA anyone before the deadline because he might be able to throw that guy into a trade.

At 6:08 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Who'd wanrbRyan, other than his wife and kids,

At 6:17 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Marchand said "his defense" when asked on Twitter if there was anything management didn't like about Refsnyder personally.

They are easily one of the 10 worst-run organizations in baseball. Just so mind-bogglingly stupid. As much as I'm enjoying watching the big club win (and I'm pulling hard for a world championship), their idiocy puts a huge damper on things.

At 6:19 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I have a feeling that they might be able to trade Drew. But if they DFA'd Ryan, they wouldn't have a UT in the event they do trade Drew.

WTF does Marchand know?

At 6:21 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Teix defended his defense

It's covering their ass for stupidity

At 6:26 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

And apparently some "source" leaked to Francesa that Refnsyder had an attitude problem.

Like, seriously? This is how far the team is willing to go to defend it's idiocy? Dogging a kid to a major NYC media member? Inexcusable behavior by what are supposed to be professionals.

At 6:28 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Who has a bigger attitude problem than that fat slob?

At 6:32 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Cano, Melky, Posada, Montrro, Joba, Hughes, IPK, and probably others I am forgetting all supposedly had attitude problems at some point.

Yet only the GM gratuitously dissed an 80 something Yankee great and trolls fans.

At 6:40 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

It's a full-on bunker mentality at this point. They're getting called out on social media left and right for their utter stupidity, yet instead of examining themselves and saying, "Hey, maybe sending down a promising young player in favor of keeping two over-the-hill middle infielders isn't the best idea in the world," some employee decides to give Francesa a talking point.

Francesa isn't the issue here. The issue is them officially jumping the shark, first by sending Warren to the pen, then by Refnsyder's demotion, and now by leaking this nonsense.

At 6:42 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Francesca should not be so willing to risk smearing a kid.

At 6:53 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Francesca's job is to garner ratings, so if he got this from a legitimate source, he'd be foolish not to run it, IMO. Then again, that's probably one media member simply defending another. :)

At 6:53 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Not sure Francesa always has a source when he dismisses someone he doesnt feel like talking about.

http://nypost.com/2015/07/20/cashman-explains-refsnyder-boot-kicking-can-down-the-road/

This is why Cashman sent down Rob Refsnyder on Sunday. The alternative was to designate for assignment either Stephen Drew or Brendan Ryan. And, for example, if one of those players was released and the Yankees then found a trade they liked for Refsnyder, they would have less inventory at second base to handle the rest of the year.

At 7:48 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

The problem with that logic is it assumes Brendan Ryan is an asset worth having, which he isn't. Why he got a three-year deal to be a backup infielder when all-glove, no-hit SS/2B are a dime a dozen, I have no idea.

What it boils down to is a scrub is blocking the team from developing what could be a legitimate talent at second base, which it has desperately needed since the departure of Cano. Literally no other team in MLB would have made this move, but the Yankees are being made to look like fools because of their unhealthy love for bad players that aren't homegrown, particularly ones on the wrong side of 30.

At 8:03 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Oh, please, that shows poor talent evaluation skills and mentally challenged priorities.

But if you feel that way, don't bring him up.

The have their lackey M. Kay dutifully repeating their nonsensical spin that Refs was called up because he gave them an advantage v. LHP in Boston and the Yankees try to win every game.

As I have said, a young player may not give you the best chance to win in his first 25 games, but will give you a better chance to win beyond 25 games and then for 5-10 years.

These people have had their poor judgment hidden by the ability to spend $200m a year every year and it has become a bad joke of incompetence.

At 8:04 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

But I must admit that it's MUCH BETTER than having Fatcessa impugn his character.

At 9:01 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

"These people have had their poor judgment hidden by the ability to spend $200m a year every year and it has become a bad joke of incompetence."

A-Rod and Teixeira are relics from an era where they could do this and get away with it. Their surprising seasons have played a huge role in this team being better than average instead of .500 or worse. And as I've said before, if they think they can still operate this way while continuing to put off young talents' development at the major-league level, this whole thing is going to crash and burn for them sooner or later.

At 9:31 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I agree, Mike. It's not like their media lapdogs are going to call them out on anything.

Jennings (conveniently overlooks Ryan, but whatever):

I think they see exactly what they've been saying they see:
1. Power bat that plays well in Yankee Stadium
2. More reliable defense than Refsnyder or Pirela
3. Depth that could help at shortstop or third base
4. BABIP that suggests he's hit into horrible luck

Not saying I agree that those things are enough to play Drew over Refsnyder at this point, but I think those are actually the things they're seeing that drive their decision making.
__

This year his BABIP is .170, last year it was .194 (2 teams).

How long does he get before actual performance matters more?

Their use of advance metrics sucks.

And on a related note, his LD% was 17.4% last year, this year it's 13.2%.

Just some stellar thinking going on there.

At 9:34 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Just for context, his career LD% is still 20% even with two consecutive seasons of a steep decline. That says more about where he is currently at as a hitter than anything.

Although as I said, make hims a super sub. Ryan is terrible. That's the mistake they can't admit.

At 10:48 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Cashman's "brought him up to face lefties to give us the best chance to win" reasoning rings hollow considering they moved Warren to the pen.

At 12:23 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I thought this exchange was interesting:

Comment From Danny D.
If the yankees did make some sort of rotation move before the all-star break, it would have to be CC that moves to the bullpen, right?

Chad: Maybe. I really don't know. I think a lot of guys in the clubhouse would be upset about it. I wonder if they'd try to get creative with some version of a six-man rotation to keep everyone rested and (maybe) healthy.
__

Not that it should matter.

At 6:38 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Ryan hits are not good for this team.

At 7:08 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

They're not going to give youth a chance until this all crashes and burns, so in the short term, I'd like them to maybe win at least another World Series to help make up for it. Thus, I don't really care at this point.
