Yanks Sign Kaprielian

The Yanks have reportedly come to terms with their first round pick James Kaprielian.   If the numbers we're seeing are correct, they went overslot for him.  I don't know how that happened, but I also don't know if they had anywhere else that money could have been applied based on summer draft and follow performances.

But, instead of looking at that, let's look at what they got.  Kaprielian is a polished rhp with swing and miss who saw his velo rise as his junior season progressed.  If the velo stays mid-90s with his breaking stuff, he could be a top of the rotation guy.  If the velo goes back to where it had been, he could still be a two or a three -- unless develops Maddox-like control, and umpire favor.

So let's hope the velo stays high.  In either event he should be a fast mover.

I thought they would have to do that

Best thing about him is, as Phil said, he should move fast. The sooner they get him to Double-/Triple-A, the better. That will give the Yankees three starters with good to very good upside in him, Severino and Mitchell.

Has there been any news recently about Ian Clarkin's injury?

What's his minor league IP target this season?

This stuff is a large reason why I stopped posting on large forums (fora).

I f'ing hate trades. I wish they'd ban them.

I don't want to make any trades, either. And almost worse than the actual trades is all the stupid trade ideas that will get pitched in the media and online.

The only deals I would look to make would be moving some BP arms before we lose them to the R5. I also would like to see what Sanchez could fetch while his stock is up..

I'd rather hold onto Sanchez unless they get a legitimate bat in return. His best days are ahead of him.

I don't want to trade Sanchez either. Young, cost-controlled bats are scarce in MLB. Right now, they have none on the ML roster (you can't include Refs yet), and they haven't had one for years.

Don't want to trade Sanchez with Luis Torrens out for the year and nothing too special behind them at this point.

I'm leery of trading as well, unless we're giving up nothing of value. I don't think that the core of the team as presently constituted is good enough to go all the way. I agree that trading Sanchez is inadvisable, unless they aren't planning on keeping him on the 40-man.

The whole problem with reporters suggesting trades is the product of having more reporters than justified by the news generated by the team. The reporters have to justify their existence on dull days, so they spice things up by speculating on unrealistic trades.

They have to realize that their success isn't necessarily sustainable because Teix and A-Rod's ability to remain near .900 OPS hitters (let alone .800) is completely unpredictable, and if they do decline, nothing they do will matter.

No position player they can acquire at any reasonable price has the chance to inject the excitement that Refs can.

Similarly, trading for a starter means ditching CC. So if they are willing to do that, try Mitchell or Severino there first.

As for pen help, given how quickly they gave up on Carpenter, they should realize that most relievers are a roll of the dice, so the price paid should reflect that.

So stop the one year plan nonsense, and begin to understand that with even a small amount of patience, this mediocrity trap they have been stuck in for years can actually give way to sustained success built on young cost-controlled players who may finally enable Hal to have the smaller, more efficient payroll he says he craves.

According to River Ave Blues, the Yankees were over slot by $700000 after signing Kaprielian, so even if they did not sign him, they would have paid the 5% overage Tax. People should be happy that they signed 35 out of 41 Picks ( especially Rogers and Gilliam which is where $835,000 of the overage went to).

When you factor in that: 1) Kaprielian had another year of eligibility; 2) he was rising in the draft; 3) that he was represented by Boras; and 4) the Yankees could not be left with nothing to show for their highest pick in over 20 years, it was foreseeable that they would be willing to go overslot.

As for trades, I would be willing to move someone like Romine, to see if he has reclaimed any value.

35 out of 41 is a good sign that ownership is finally taking the draft seriously, at least.

Lawyer, well-said. I'm coming around to your point of view in that they should just go with an in-house starter if they want one. Otherwise, I'd be fine with a bat depending on what they gave up. As far as relievers go, Nick Goody has been impressive this year. Maybe a September call-up candidate?

LNJ is spot on. They did a good job signing alot of picks and not losing a draft pick over bonuses. Now we'll see how well they did in scouting the picks.

This is so Chad Jennings trying not to offer an opinion, as is too often the case:

The Yankees could used help at second base.
But they might already have that help on the roster.

Stephen Drew’s bizarre season earned absolute support from Joe Girardi, but over the weekend the Yankees finally brought Rob Refsnyder up from Triple-A and watched him hit a key home run on Sunday. Refsnyder could be the second base solution for this season and many others going forward, but the Yankees called him up so late that they don’t have much time to find out what he can do before deciding whether to make a move. Ben Zobrist looms as the most obvious second base target, but he could be traded any day now. Do the Yankees need to pounce on Zobrist, or is Refsnyder going to solve the second base situation? There’s not much time to figure that out.

Tomorrow, I hope to post on the picks they signed. It's a pretty astonishing number.

At 5:33 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

At this point, they've already given Drew half a season at second, so there's no reason not to afford the same opportunity to a prospect like Refsnyder. Zobrist is a good player, but I don't really feel like giving up prospects for a rental unless that rental has a good chance of being re-signed in the offseason (since you can't recoup draft picks on traded players anymore). And given his age, Zobrist isn't someone they should be signing anyway.

I want to Refs to play. Anyone they acquire to play second base other than him will make me puke.

The @Dbacks underspent their @MLBDraft bonus pool by nearly $1.7 mil. Poor use of what should have been a strategic advantage.
