Yanks Win

This one had all of the making of those games in which Rick Cerrone would end up pitching in the mid-80's.   Capuano started and gave up 5 runs before he could record the third in th first inning.  He was replace by Diego Moreno who'd been called up earlier.  Moreno got the third out, but it looked like it was gonna be a long night -- and it sort of was -- because after that the Yanks did not stop scoring until they hit 21 and that took time, becaus the only homers were a granny from Chris Young and a two shot from Gardy off of  position player in the ninth.  Everything else was hits, walks, some doubles, a triple and two hit batsmen.   Tex might have hurt his foot when he was hit.    DiDi Gregorius had 4 hits, including a bases clearing triple and was hit by a pitch.   Everyone but Tex had a pretty good night.  Oh, and Yankee pitching, which was just Moreno and Warren, didn't give up a single hit, and just 1 walk over the last 25 outs of the ballgame.   Impressive.

Meanwhile, it's time to DFA Capuano.   Should see some moves before game three.

Just don't spoil it with shortsighted trades

One thing I'll say in the front office's defense is I can't remember any short-sighted trades at the deadline in recent seasons, and it doesn't look like they'll go that route this time.

This team is pretty fun to keep up with right now. A few tweaks here and there, and it'll be set for an October run.

Geez, Texas didn't even have a hit after Capuano left. Talk about completely deflating their momentum.

15 games over .500! If we get to 20 we're a shoo-in for th playoffs.

According to,reports, Cashman tried to get Dempster, Samardzjja, and Hammel in recent years but was outbid because at those points, he didn't have the prospects he has now.

All, btw, were bad after being traded.

What has changed this year? Teix and A-Rod have changed the dynamic of the team.

Two impact bats, not fragile pitchers, are the closest thing to "keys."

That said, the season has been fun to date in part because I do love offense. So let's see what they do. All I ask is for own own young players to get a chance, including Refs. Rooting for rotisserie teams just isn't as much fun

As frustrated as I've been over the lack of their own prospects getting legitimate shots, reports of Bird, Judge, Severino and Mateo being "untouchable" has made me cautiously optimistic that youth will be getting a shot in the future. If Girardi is as much of a problem in this regard as I've heard he is, though, the team might want to re-evaluate whether or not he's the right man for the job long-term.

A-Rod, Teix, Gardner, Ellsbury (when he's healthy), Young against lefties and, at times, McCann, Beltran and Didi, have done a good job being the Bronx freaking Bombers.

DiDi and Headley have been playing great baseball for well over a month now -- happy to see them both start playing up to their abilities. Headley was never going to be the power hitter he was in his near MVP level season but he's been playing a lot better defense and hitting for good average.

Since the first month ended, DiDi has been playing plus defense and hitting the ball where it's pitched. His avg has gone up 20 points each month and is definitely trending in the right direction. He is top 10 in WAR, above the likes of Tulo, Desmond & Reyes. The guy we gave up for him, Shane Greene has regressed to the point where he was sent down to AAA and is now a reliever. For all the flack Cashman receives, this was a great trade.

Additionally, another player who is trending in the right direction is Eovaldi. He has been pitching better of late and his sequencing is definitely improved. His splitter velocity has ticked up too, which is a great indicator that he's throwing it with more conviction. He's still just 25, younger than Shane Greene and is improving. Another good trade.

Hopefully Capuano gets cut today. I was quite impressed with Moreno last night too. I haven't seen him before but he pounded the zone with a heavy mid 90's fastball and a good changeup. For only his 3rd appearance, I was happy to see him attack instead of nibble, which shows me he trusts his stuff - something Jose Ramirez doesn't seem to ever do.

As far as the deadline goes, I personally would like to see the Yanks trade Nova + smaller level prospects for Samardzja but unfortunately, CWS doesn't look to inclined to sell.

Other than that, I don't see much else that should be done but Cashman has usually made some smaller moves at this time that come out of left field so we'll see.

At 7:52 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I would trade Headley and Beltran (or Nova for that matter) in a heartbeat.

At 8:03 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

I don't see any point in trading Headley -- we don't have any near term prospects to bring up to play 3b and he has been playing well.

At 8:27 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Headley's going through a big correction. We can probably trade him next offseason if anyone else is ready.

At 8:41 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The point in trading Headley is that: 1) He is on a upswing that almost certainly isn't sustainable; 2) His contract is awful; and 3) If Cashman is indeed in love with Prado, he can trade for him to play 3B and not block Refs.

If they wait, the back issues could resurface.

Obviously, it depends on what is offered, but given his inconsistency, he may not be hitting well when trading him seems like an easier decision.

Latos to the Dodgers.

At 10:43 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

As Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com recently tweeted, Hamels can be dealt to two American League clubs (the Yankees and Rangers) or seven National League clubs (the Nationals, Cardinals, Braves, Padres, Dodgers, Cubs, and Mets) without his consent. Of those teams, of course, Texas and Los Angeles have been most heavily tied to Hamels, with the Yankees and Cubs also mentioned at times as teams with possible interest.

They should sue him for restitution, since he was unjustly enriched.

If Moncada ever becomes a star, remember the Capuano and Drew contracts.

We have reportedly turned down Mateo for Kimbrel.

At 12:01 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Beyond the prospects, investing the money needed for Kimbrel, imo, is bizarre.

14:$7M, 15:9M, 16:$11M, 17:$13M, 18:$13M club option ($1M buyout)
may earn additional $3.5M in performance bonuses

Their vulnerability is any injury to, or decline of Teix and A-Rod.

At 12:15 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I agree with Billy RE: Headley. There isn't a player I'd feel comfortable replacing him with yet, since Jagielo is hurt and there are questions about him being able to stick at third. Of course, if they re-acquire Prado, that's a different story.

On Kimbrel, I love the player but hate the contract. Glad they turned down him for Mateo.

At 12:21 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

If they wanted to be the Dodgers and move to $300m. but there is less than zero indication of that, and the pen isn't the place to do it.

At 12:44 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Yeah. I don't mind Hal's desire for fiscal responsibility (except when it costs them high-end international talent), but if that's the goal, then the team needs to stop playing the Drews of the world over the Refsnyders.

Severino is still listed as tonight's Scranton starter.

FWIW, and it maybe just hot air Bowden thinks Cashman is going to trade for Price or Hamels.

At 4:40 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

It's looking more and more like smaller moves will be the name of the game for the Yankees at the deadline. What teams are asking for these players is too expensive in terms of prospects.

Not really buying that, Michael. I think the Yankees' name is being mentioned just to drive up the price.

If Severino is this good, they should just keep him.

At 7:23 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I think they are in on Price, but everyone seems to think the Dodgers will get him.

There are conflicting reports on whose medicals negated the Gomez for Wheeler/Flores trade, But based on talent, that would've been a steal for the Mets.

At 12:13 AM, Anonymous Stottlemyre68 said...

Sanchez is quietly up to .294 and caught Severino's gem. Has the light gone on there? Refs had 2E's, but I wonder if that was trade deadline jitters, which he's shown he can get over.

It sounds like Gomez's hip.

At 6:16 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Eovaldi for a two month rental of Price, who hangs up first ?

At 7:20 AM, Anonymous Bob said...

Tigers no doubt. Sanchez would need to be included for Detroit to even consider.

Maybe Nova/Eovaldi & Sanchez

At 8:07 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

They can't trade young impact bats.

At 9:00 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Heyman:
The Yankees seem willing to give up Ivan Nova in a trade for Price, but not prospect Adam Warren.
__

This could be nonsense (and Warren isn't a prospect), but the Yankees have had this mindset before, iow, trade more talented younger players to keep older, lower ceiling vets.

At 9:18 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Trading Sanchez now would be really shortsighted since there are no other plus catchers in the organization right now. Flames is playing 1B in the DSL.

At 9:39 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Price to the Jays. The major prospects seem safe.

At 10:04 AM, Anonymous Bob said...

Looking more like Samardzjia for NY

At 10:10 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

That has been my guess all along, but the cost is everything.

At 10:15 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

And what I said yesterday about Price is even more true of Samardzjia,

Severino would be much better than he is, TODAY.

That would upgrade the rotation much, much more.

If true, suck it up and use Severino and Mitchell.

At 10:31 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Warren to the rotation, call up Mitchell. IP limit would factor into Severino's potential call-up.

At 10:32 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

When are they shutting Severino down?

At 10:38 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I suspect we'll get Kimbrel or Chapman and some bat or a young starting pitcher who no one even knew was available.

Not sure what the limits on Mitchell and Severino are.

At 10:42 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Kimbrel would be really bad, imo.
