This Week on the Blog
We got past the trade deadline and the Yanks decided to jump in the tank. And the news out of Giants camp has been on little injury after another. Sheesh. The Knicks and Rangers have been quiet and rational. Let's hope this weeks is a little better.
Yanks: Joe Girardi does not understand leverage and that killled the Yankees today. I spent too much time last offseason explaining when our bullpen aces should be used -- and today in the 6th was a perfect example. Nova, who's coming off of Tommy John, was over 100 pitches when he gave up the grand slam. My concern now, since the Yanks are blowing their lead is that they NOT make a waiver trade and spend the prospects they just saved. It's a dangerous time, and if they're going to collapse, management should just let them collapse.
Giants: The Giants will spend part of the week practicing against Cincy, and Friday, they will play them in their pre-season game. Of course, it will only be those of them who are healthy enough to play that we'll see... Seriously, the Giants need health luck, because they have a chance to be good.
Rangers: The Rangers still could make a trade for cap relief any day now. Brandon Halverson is playing well for Team USA, and Pavel B has been hot in KHL pre-season work.
Knicks: Kristaps Porzingis has take over the #6 from the vanquished Travis Wear. Other than that, Phil will do what Phil does, and we'll see if he does any of it this week.
I hope it's a great week for all of you and neither you nor any of our players get injured.

Two concerns:
Giants' OL health
Teflon Joey's idiocy
he gives away games. And I have no idea why Gardy sits for Young when Beltran can't catch a cold.
I guess Davidoff doesn't realize that virtually no runs scored in the last few games:
http://nypost.com/2015/08/08/blasting-girardis-gaffe-ignores-yankees-real-pitching-problem/
And the idea that Joey makes the right choice most the time, he has two of the best relievers/closers in MLB and a lot of other pretty good arms. How many managers can say that? As with Torre, not many.
Teflon!
I can't believe the fools in the fan base and in the media keep harping on pitching. What???
Enough is enough. Bring Refsnyder and Heathcott up NOW. Shake this team up a bit and get the black holes out of the lineup.
Let's put everything I've ever said negative about Cashman aside. When you've been in one place for a long time it can be tougher to think outside the box. Well, maybe now is the time?
At least the Justin Wilson trade looks like a good one. (Cervelli is an injury waiting to happen and his .367 BABIP is unsustainable.)
I have always said, Cashman has done well with the pen. Beyond that, not really given his abundant advantages.
Anyway, maybe they can score here.
And just looking at the box score, Tanaka has been good sans the HR.
OK, this Drew psychosis they have is nauseating.
I'll just cut and paste a recent Twitter post here: There really is no logical explanation that Stephen Drew and Brendan Ryan are on the Yankees Aug. 9 at the same time.
The Yankee Way™:
When you are a veteran, all you have to do is show flashes of some kind of positive, and your tenure is secured.
When you are a kid, if you don't dominate almost immediately, you're gone.
It makes even less sense than the pitching, pitching, pitching nonsense that is continually spread by the addled brains of the NY sports media.
Joey G. thinks only offense comes and goes?
I mean, there are some fans I once thought "got it" who are just lost about him now.
Jack Curry
When Drew watches videotape of last strikeout, he'll realize how Hawkins played him. Kept going up ladder w/ FB. Scoreless streak at 24 inn.
__
Yeah, because it has been sooooooooo hard to get Drew out these last few seasons.
When Curry wrote for the NYT, I thought he was a first-rate reporter.
As a member of Yankee Pravda, he is a contemptible homer.
“Offenses go through this,” Girardi said. “Every offense is going to go through this from time to time. We have a good offense, we just struggled this weekend for whatever reason."
This is the problem in a nutshell. Their starting pitching has had the same consistency issues, but Teflon Joe says nothing about that.
When you are relying on an aging Carlos Beltran, a mediocre Chris Young, a mediocre Chase Headley, a horrible Drew and Ryan, you're much more likely to get into the slumps. Add in an injured Ellsbury, and you realize this was predictable.

When Cashman said in ST that Bird was best hitter on the farm, I thought it was an oversell. But having seen him, Cash was right. By a lot.
And you're right, LINJ. It's why I advocated calling up Refsnyder and Heathcott. Give this team a shot in the arm with players that have a chance to be good. And if Ellsbury is playing hurt, DL him, because he's a black hole right now.
Definitely, Mike.
So when do we see Bird, and where does he play?
Jennings:
13. Rob Refsnyder
July 11, Triple-A to New York
Probably most memorable specifically because it lasted on four days. Initially, the Refsnyder call-up seemed to be the start of what’s next in the Yankees’ infield, but the team ultimately decided to keep Stephen Drew at second base, keep Brendan Ryan as the platoon infielder, and ship Refsnyder back to Triple-A. His big league cameo wasn’t a bad one, and the big question now is whether he’ll get another significant look. A September call-up should be a given, but will he actually play or simply sit the bench?
16. Bryan Mitchell
July 30, Triple-A to New York
This was not Mitchell’s first call-up of the season and certainly not the first of his career, the promotion in late July might have been Mitchell’s most meaningful call-up yet because he actually got to stick around. He was burned out in a spot start and still wasn’t shipped back to Triple-A to be stretched out. With the big league rotation mostly healthy, the Yankees have been fairly hesitant to give Mitchell a lasting role in the big league bullpen. But he has the Triple-A numbers to suggest he deserves a real shot. Maybe he’s finally getting one in the final two months of the season.
This writer is so dumb. I don't want anyone's autograph, but it's not about what he's done in the major leagues, it's about buying something fot the future, not unlike a company who is going for a very high multiple but has small or even no profits now

I have never said anything about Cashman as insulting as this by Jennings:
• Also potentially available: second baseman Chase Utley. According to Morosi, the Phillies have placed Utley on trade waivers (of course they have), and the Yankees have been linked to Utley in the past. His numbers are awfully bad, but Utley’s a left-handed power hitter, and I suppose the Yankees could be tempted to give it a shot (thought I would guess that they’d prefer to simply stick with Stephen Drew).
Refs...nah...that would be too risky because he might hit like a washed up veteran.
Probably just speculation. Then again, I have to imagine Randy Levine would just love to market Utley...
Honestly, if it is about marketing, a Korean-American with a growing population in the NY area would present a much better growth opportunity.
I noticed this at RAB on the CBS Sports app. I think he gives the Yankees too much credit but he's probably right about their (flawed) thinking:
3. The current second base situation — again, literally Drew and Brendan Ryan — says a lot about what the Yankees think of Rob Refsnyder, doesn’t it? They can say whatever they want about liking him long-term, but actions speak louder than words. The second base situation has become so untenable that if they believed Refsnyder could help, he’d be up here. (Longer than four games, I mean.) They’ve been very aggressive with their prospects this year, whether it was the outfielders or the relievers or Severino, yet there is Refsnyder stuck in Triple-A. They must really not believe his defense is ready or simply do not expect him to hit much. The Yankees are pretty good at evaluating their own prospects — yes, they do miss on some, that’s inevitable, but when’s the last time they traded away a young player they truly regret? — so calling them stupid would be sorta silly. Refsnyder’s prospect stock was always more stats than scouting report, and the stats this year haven’t been knocked your socks off (131 wRC+). That’s not enough for a bat first guy in Triple-A. I wish they’d call Refsnyder up just because I’m sick of watching Drew pop up three times a game, but I’m guessing there’s also a pretty good reason Refsnyder has not gotten an extended trial.

(I don't think they've been quite as aggressive as a pretends. Neither Flores nor Williams got full shots, and Mitchell has been jerked around.)
I tend to agree with that take, only because they seem to have legit love for Bird, Judge, Severino and Mateo, at least according to articles I read leading up to the deadline.
Although they were reportedly willing to trade Mateo for Kimbrel. In fact, Cashman largely admitted it.
But otoh, does that even matter? Not every important piece of a team is elite, and they need a 2B. This is the same team that played Brian Roberts forever, and never gave Kelly Johnson a shot, even though he would have been a significant upgrade.
Maybe this is Cashman giving in to Teflon Joe, but either way, the result is the same: suboptimal roster construction.
How the fuck do you punch your starting QB? He'd have to do something ugly to your mother.
I realize the asshole who did it was cut, but is that enough?
New York Jets QB Geno Smith to miss 6-10 weeks after suffering broken jaw when teammate IK Enemkpali punched him, team says; Enemkpali released from team - @CBSNewYork
Jetiest Jet thing ever.
I don't care if they hit tonight, because anything can happen in any given game, this lineup is bizarre:
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Brett Gardner LF
Alex Rodriguez DH
Mark Teixeira 1B
Brian McCann C
Carlos Beltran RF
Didi Gregorius SS
Stephen Drew 2B
Brendan Ryan 3B
RHP Luis Severino
Headley had a terrible throwing error last time he played behind Luis.
Headley is saying he is banged up, but it points to the weakness of the roster.
My kingdom for a do-over for the contracts of Headley, Beltran and McCann, and about $5M less annually for Ellsbury.
McCann is setting up too far outside of the strikezone.
It's so tough to watch by offense, and when an offense hasn't scored in like 30 IP, it's impossible to give credit to any pitcher.
John and Suzyn have absolutely no sense of what randomness means.
Gregorius has been the best player on the team the last month.
I don't care what the Yankees "brain trust" thinks, if that doesn't motivate them to give Refs a chance, they are lost.
Drew sucks.
Ryan sucks.
Ellsbury has to be hurt.
Patience isn't always a virtue.
So does Ellsbury for the checks he's getting.
Severino breaks lumber like Mo used to.
I predict a run
Called it but I would rather not have this horrible player doing it
Cone sounds like a complete moron
It's pretty hard to argue there are many undervalued Yankees
Yanks have scouted Utley
I think this is his last batter
If they get Utley it pretty much means that they are the stupidest team that's ever existed. I'll say it's not going to happen
The kid is a keeper.
Anyway back to what matters, an excellent outing all things considered
Showed he could deal with adversity.
Cannot lose this game
Drew back to being Drew
Time for the big boys to assert themselves
The guy working with Cone is terrible
Unreal
Let's go Slow Mo Carlos
If he got thrown out there I would've needed a new remote
There is probably no one else I'd rather have up
Drew is getting a hit
Nope he sucks
Didi should bat 2nd
A .190 feast or famine hitter makes no sense
DL Ellsbury, cut Drew, call up Refs and Heathcott. It's so simple.
Actually, in reality, if ARod and Teix aren't hitting (both in a slump), this team isn't doing anything either way.
The whole team is in the tank, but I do think they should bring up some kids to wake them up.
It's time to get rid of the manager.
And will every person in the media who said the problem is they need more pitching please do something else for a living
This team has made a lot of poor decisions in recent years, including the idiotic back-and-forth between the rotation and pen for Joba and the botched rehab for Wang to keeping Refsnyder in AAA for goodness knows what reason, but it all pales in comparison to how they've utterly neutered a valuable asset in Warren.
I mean, you can't make up how badly they've handled this.
They lost the game when Girardi waited till McCann got to second to pinch run for him. A pinch runner would have been on third, and not gotten thrown out. Thus 5-2 instead of 4-2.
James Kaprielian, the Yankees’ first-round (16th overall) pick in the June draft, will make his professional debut Wednesday for the Gulf Coast League Yankees.
Looking at heat maps, against the Six last week, Severino only used half of the plate, inside to lefties, outside to righties. Last night he used both sides, he just left too many balls in the middle of the plate early in the game.
Since the trade deadline, here’s what the Yankees’ regulars have done:
Ellsbury: .105/.167/.263
Gardner: .143/.250/.143
Rodriguez: .182/.325/.242
Teixeira: .167/.231/.333
McCann: .148/.207/.407
Beltran: .304/.429/.609
Headley: .267/.371/.333
Gregorius: .355/.400/.387
Drew: .190/.190/.476
Pitching, pitching, pitching......
Gregorius made a ridiculous DP turn last night --- I absolutely love this kid.
As I said, he should be moved up in the lineup. His offense may or may not continue, but they need to exploit what they have NOW.
Oh, and I bring up his really good offense because that is what makes his defense truly valuable. Defense absent offense has very little value over time, unlike the converse, i.e., HoF Jeter.
