Yanks Fail to Support Severino
Severino really only made one or two mistakes today, the biggest of which was a hanging slider to Bautista. Both were made after what should have been ruled a two base error on Carlos Beltran, who's glove the ball contacted, but was instead ruled a two out double by the official scorer. Even with that, Severino gave them a "quality start" while the O only managed 1 run against a pitcher whose ERA was over 5 when the game started. This happened because they did not grind out their at bats, which has been a years long issue under Girardi. When they don't grind they don't give themselves as many chances to win. It's that simple.
And I can't believe their still letting Drew make more outs than can be justified by the ones he runs into every couple of weeks, and the marginal runs he prevents in the field. Call up Refsnyder. He at least GRINDS.
Severino has pitched well enough to win three times for a winning team, and he hasn't won one yet. That's inexcusable.

I really do believe they just aren't enamored with Refsnyder's potential like they are Severino or Bird's, for example. Otherwise, he'd have long been up here as a mainstay.
Yeah, it's less than great when the team you root for isn't using its assets in the best possible way.
I don't doubt that Refs isn't Bird or Severino, but if that's the test, it's pretty though to fill out a 25 man roster.
I know some of them love Refsnyder. I really think it's a Girardi thing.
That's what's frustrating. He had no problem imposing his will on the faux icon that was Torre. Girardi would seem to have a much smaller powerbase, including with the media, who probably secretly loathe him.

Girardi on ball Beltran lost in sun: "It’s happened to anyone who’s ever played the game...But Carlos was pretty big for us this series."

Translation: Yes, his defense sucks, but we're playing him.
Beltran won us the first two games of the series -- although he should have caught that ball, Severino also didn't have to hang sliders to both Donaldson and Bautista. As a pitcher, it's your responsibility to help pickup your teammates. David Cone also agrees with my opinion.
I really don't understand why Bird didn't play instead of Arod today. While Hutchison has a high ERA, his home splits are really good. We didn't do a good job of battling today or even yesterday vs Estrada but both of these guys attacked the zone early and often.
I am still baffled as to why Drew keeps playing, it's basically a free out 9/10 times.
“That’s a good of an arm as we’ve seen all year,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said.
Pineda gave up 2 in 3 innings.
Jordan Montgomery struck out 10... He and Jordan Foley are starting to cruise.
Doming Acevedo, too.
Beltran's bat is valuable (never thought I'd say that early this season), but he's a DH at this point. Unless ARod up and retires, you HAVE to move Beltran in the offseason. No ifs, ands or buts.
The team's fascination with Drew defies logic. I really wish there was some inside info there.
Also, Jose Mesa Jr. is sporting a .41 ERA in the NYPL where they are using him in relief. Thought they might try to make him a starter when they drafted him. Guess the injuries simplified the plan.
Just saw highlights. The Batista HR was on a slider. That was not his best pitch today.
Oh and Boone said Beltran is a good fielder. Time warp analyst
The Yankees never support young pitchers with offense.
That could be true, I haven't looked at the stats, but I can recall one that did:
Check out the W/L record and the ERA of his first two seasons:

(that may have changed in his third season)
Anyway, even with the adversity (or maybe because of it), Severino is showing how good he can be.
He reminds me of Pedro, whom I used to see as a young Dodger and send letters to Stick Michael telling him to acquire him because I was hearing the Dodgers internally favored his brother and Pedro Astacio.
But for Jim Beattie's grudge against George, he would have been. Of course, Posada never would have had a Yankee career.
Wow, this kid is so unbelievably strong, and the Yankees made a really nice gesture. I happened to be in Charleston last month and went to the church, and it was an incredibly powerful experience.

Awesome gesture by the Yankees, and yeah, that young man has strength very few have.
The kid is amazing.
Mitchell starting tonight. Every one pushed back a day.
I eagerly await the rotation through September when Pineda comes back.
Let's hope Mitchell shows what he can really do this time. With Severino and Eovaldi, he gives us a third guy 25 or younger who can top 98.
