Yanks Win a Wild One

First of all, our prayers and good thoughts are for Bryan Mitchell, who was finally getting another start tonight, but was felled by linedrive off the bat of former Yankee Eduardo Nunez.   Fortunately he only seems to have a broken nose, but let's hope he doesn't also have a concusion or any other damage.  Let's hope he is able to pitch again soon.   He's a good kid with a big career ahead of him.

In the game, after McCann hit one of his patented 3 run shots in the first, it looked like it would be a blow out.   But Mitchell got hurt, and Caleb Cotham, whose probably already on a plane to parts unknown, came in and gave up a two our rally, and then more runs as he tried to take one for the team.   Sano, who would be Yankee but for Hal, hit yet another bomb of them.     The Yanks finally got things back under control, using their regular pen, and a homer by Beltran tied things up.

They somehow couldn't score froma a bases loaded situation in the 7th or 8th, but finally did in th 10th.   Greg Bird, who was in for Tex, who'd earlier fouled one off his leg, lead off with a double.  Then McCann doubled, and for reasons unknown Joe Espada had another brain cramp and held Bird at third.   Girardi hates kids, so after they walked Beltran to load the bases, Girardi lifted Bird for Ryan, who scored the winning run, when Eduardo Nunez booted a ground ball...

Whacky game.  They'll probably call up a pitcher or two tomorrow, but should also call up Rob Refsnyder.   All Drew does between homers is make outs and spike rallies.

Bird can help this team right now. He's getting consistently good AB.

And I agree, they could be better if they played the right people. Someone needs to exert their authority

Glad to hear things weren't worse for Mitchell. I'll say a prayer for a speedy recovery.

So, Phil, what exactly is Girardi's beef with kids?

At 10:51 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think Refs has not come back because he said he was "suprised" to be sent down. Now the last thing we had heard before he was sent down was Girardi saying he was "here to stay" and would play everyday. Thus Girardi was made to look like he's full of it

And we can tell Giradi hates to be embarrassed by the idiotic answers to his stupid in game decisions he gives like "strategy" when anything he does is questioned.

He's a phony.

Girardi is a thin-skinned, supercilious fool, but he has to answer to those above him. That nothing seems to be done suggests that they approve of what he does.

The non-use of Refsnyder and the way the team has buried Warren may be on Girardi in a practical sense (in that he makes the immediate decisions on the field), but as Lawyer said, the fact that Cashman hasn't stepped in and imposed a different will suggests he is complicit — or just doesn't care.

On a separate note - it is hard to complain about Beltran anymore. Sure, his defense is below "horrific", but his bat since the calendar changed to May has been as expected. Nice power, good average and OBP, and solid production.

If A-Rod could play anywhere in the field a couple of days a week, Beltran at DH would be super.

At 10:11 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Beltran is finally producing as an offset to A-Rod's significance slump, Teix's as well, but he hasn't been as bad.

Prior to the season, I was high on both, although I never expected A-Rod to be as good as he has been, and Beltran's offensive production has been less spectacular, until this month:

.317 .429 .756 1.185

He is up to a 123 OPS+ right now, and that ties him for 3rd with Gardner.

If this keeps up, maybe they can, as Mike has suggested, move him to a team that needs a DH in the offseason, for a younger asset, because that defense raises the level he has to produce at offensively to be worth the PT, and that doesn't get easier as a player nears 40.

At 10:45 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

He's one of several I'd move this offseason, along with McCann (NTC though so you'd have to get him to agree) and Nova. CC is an obvious choice, but I'm not sure anyone would take him and he also has a NTC.

At 11:35 AM, Anonymous Matt said...

Doesn't Beltran have an NTC too though? I just assume every overpaid, over-the-hill free agent they sign these days gets one.

I think it's a limited one.

I don't understand why they think Capu is worth having around. You could probably get a bunch of guys out of an independent league and they would have as much chance of succeeding or failing.

And for $5 million they probably be your slave

At 12:26 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Rumbelow's back, too.

At 12:40 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

@BryanHoch: Yankees lineup vs. MIN: Ellsbury cf Gardner lf Rodriguez dh Beltran rf Bird 1b Gregorius ss Murphy c Drew 2b Ryan 3b Sabathia p

That lineup, plus CC starting and Capuano relieving is as much of a concession by Girardi as you'll see this season.

At 12:50 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I would flip flop A-Rod and Beltran, but it's great to see Bird playing.

At 12:57 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

McCann now in the lineup. Said he wrote down the wrong name. I wonder if in reality he got a call from upstairs?

At 1:09 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

You would tend to want to ride a hot hitter, something Girardi doesn't always do, possibly because he undervalues offense, preferring marginal players like himself.

So if Cashman made the call, I get it.

@M_Marakovits
Cashman said Teixeira's CT scan revealed a significant bone bruise (luckily no break) No timetable yet... Will see Yankees team Dr. B4 game

At 2:45 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Maybe Kyle Roller will finally get a shot.

At 4:29 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

CC sharp again, early.

At 4:46 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Drew starting right out with the first of four or five ceremonial outs today.

At 4:54 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Didi helps CC!

At 5:20 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I wonder how long they would stick with a six man rotation

At 5:23 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Yay Bird. That's what's fun for me not watching aging veterans

At 5:29 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Hittrrs with 30 home runs batting .190 have usually had their value questioned. But Drew? Nope, bulletproof

At 5:34 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

There goes history.

At 5:38 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Damn, and there goes the no-hitter, too.

At 5:40 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

CC just had to give it back..

At 5:40 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Nice throw. It seems like CC tires in every start by the fifth. We'll see if he rebounds

At 5:52 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

everything is outside now. Walks the number nine hitter.

At 5:53 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Bird look smooth

At 5:56 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

That would have been 1 out with a man on second back in the Giambi era.

At 6:04 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Pelfrey is vulnerable

At 6:07 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Suzyn couldn't be stupider. She just said the difference between Molitor doing metrics and everyone else is that when Molitor says something it means something because he's Molitor.

At 6:17 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

This inning scares me.

I couldn't even get it out fast enough

At 6:19 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

She scary stupid

I'll assume nobody was getting warmed up because nobody in the pen who is rested is worth getting up?

At 6:20 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Sano should be a Yankee.

At 6:21 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

True, but it is what it is

At this point in his career he is not a good matchup for CC.

At 6:30 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

After the 5th inning NO ONE is a good matchup for CC anymore.

At 6:31 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I think Singleton is wrong to suggest that the difference in Eovaldi between this year and last is run support

At 6:40 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

CC cannot face a lineup 3x -- just unacceptable.

At 6:42 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Hook one

At 6:46 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Good hire by the Sox. I knew there was a reason he left.

At 6:47 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

They have to score at least a run here

At 6:47 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Cherrington out, Dombrowski to the Sox.

At 6:48 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

C'mon, ARod bust your slump.

At 6:48 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

A-Rod may not go back to being what he was this season, but he's better than what he has been lately

At 6:50 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

The Sox are an organization whose ownership is serious about winning. Contrast that with the Yankees, whose ownership is serious about cronyism and profitability above all else.

At 6:51 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I wish it were otherwise...well put.

At 6:51 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Fuck yeah

At 6:53 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

That was awesome!!

At 6:59 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

He had all these relievers and he left CC in? Teflon

At 7:08 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Yay Bird

At 7:10 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Good things have happened since Drew left

At 7:12 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

The Yankees' official Twitter account called him "bae-Rod." I'm done, LOL.

OK, just read that Dombrowski will be president of baseball ops in Boston. Cherington could've stayed on as GM but declined. Still, a good post for Dombrowski, who can hire a GM and get to work.

At 7:14 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Oh yeah it was obvious he was going to be a president, as I said I thought it would get a Theo like position

At 7:24 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I actually wouldn't mind Cashman in such a position, but we all know Hal is infatuated with Levine. :-/

At 7:36 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

We disagree
