This Week on The Blog

This week could go any number of ways on the blog, as at least three of the teams could be making moves.

Yanks:  The Yankees will head into the all star break after tomorrow's game.   They will either finish the "first half" at .500 or 2 games over .500.   The commissioner's office has preferred the Yanks to not take away from their midsummer classic by making trades.  Sometimes they do anyway.   What we really should be hoping for is call ups.  It would be great to see Refsnyder, Pirela and Roller or any combination of same on the roster when the break is over.   So we'll see if they promote anyone or if they go to their old standby of trading young for old.

Giants:  The Giants are still mostly on their vacations, and unless there's some cap work or an extension, nothing is likely to happen with them.

Knicks:  Carmelo's return should become official tomorrow.  And they should continue being fun in the Vegas league.    What we'll have to see is whether or not the Knicks have any more moves ready for this year, or if they are pushing everything till next year.

Rangers:  The Rangers will keep trying to make deals with their RFA's ahead of arbitration which starts at the end of the week.  In general, they've been too quiet and give the time of year it is, that probably means a trade is coming.  Let's hope it's one of their good ones and not one of those trades make where they don't get enough for what they are giveng up, or needlessly include future picks.

So that's where we are.   And it can go any number of ways, except for the Giants.

Go teams!

From Madden's article:

“The Yankees seem bent on developing utility players,” said one scout who has spent a lot of time at Trenton this season, adding: “O’Brien has tremendous power, which you don’t see too much from the right side in the minors, but he seemed to be all screwed up mentally from all the position changes and he strikes out way too much. He’ll be overmatched against major league pitching.”

He strikes out because he has no plate disc. But if he develops some he'll be a good ML power hitter.

I didn't think they should have promoted him without a much better OBP to go with the jacks.

Read the article. Madden doesn't really understand what has gone on with the system and the team. Hughes and Joba were going to be better than Pettitte and were in the system. They got screwed up at the ML level. Wang was good at the MLB level and got hurt. The guys who are coming up and filling in now have been pretty good to very good.

Banuelos had TJS or he'd be up and rocking. Banuelos came from the system and is awesome. Cano wasn't drafted but came from the system and is a superstar.

In a way, they are doing to Refsnyder (or are risking doing so) what they did to Hughes and Joba, alterering a role to service a short term goal. Teams that draft low have a limited number of bullets, and the Yankees skewed thought process ends up aiming those bullets at themselves rather than their opponents. That ends up lowering their performance ceiling and forces even more short- sighted moves in a self-perpetuating cycle.
