This Week on the Blog

Alright, this week it became Trey Burke's World and we're just living in it.  A good organization would know what to do -- but let's see what the Knicks do.  Otherwise, the Giants started assembling an impressive staff, the Yanks continued showing Cashian patience, and the Rangers finally look like they are selling. Cool stuff.  Let's take a look at the week ahead.

Giants: The Giants have named most of their defensive staff, the only the Wide Receivers coach on their offensive staff.  They are either still talking to coaches or waiting for coaches who are in the Super Bow -- and probably a little of both. Meanwhile, clues are that they will be very "multiple" on O, and we're going to see Olivier Vernon standing up more.  We might also go back to taking some of those "tweeners" who can pass rush, like Reggie Torbor and Clint Sintim, and this time letting them RUSH THE PASSER.  How novel.

Knicks: The Knicks have veteran problems.  First, Lee said he'd be fine with a trade, next Noah left the team, and third, and most problematically, Jarret Jack is playing more than Trey Burke and Frank Ntilikina, and that's just really stupid. It's both stupid for now and the future.  Frank, who's still just 19 has looked a little confused, as he should be, by the coach's decision to take Frank's minutes and give them to Burke, and not Jack's minutes.  Frank and Trey should be splitting the minutes now.  That's the only way for Frank to go, and not have to go through the multi-year sojour that has brought Burke back as a star.  Now they have to find out what they have in both Frank as well as Burke, but cause they don't want to make the same mistake with a 25 year old Trey Burke that they made with a 25 year old Jeremy Lin.  Sheesh -- should be really easy to figure out.

Yankees: Nearly 2 months ago, after the Stanton Deal, Randy Levine bragged that the Yanks weren't done.  Well, we're waiting. And waiting.  Over the past two decade's Cash's patience -- which runs totally counter to the Boss's old impatience -- has really paid off of the Yanks.  Let's see if it does again. Remember, we got ARod over Valentine's Weekend 14 years ago.

Rangers:  Larry Brooks and the other beats are reporting that the Rangers are ready to sell, sell, sell. While that is the appropriate strategy, it's all about the take back.  The Yanks got  literally nothing for Gary Sheffield and Randy Johnson when they sold them off, but 10 years later, they kicked ass during their sell off.  The Rangers sold Leetch and others about 15 years ago and literally got nothing.  Now they have to make sure they're more like the 2016 Yanks, than either of their last attempts. Picks and prospects, please.

So there it is, the Giants have a staff to fill, the Knicks have policy to make, the Yanks could strike or not, and the Rangers need to run a successful fire sale.  So there it all is.  Have a great one, peeps!

New Giants’ HC Pat Shurmur was able to retain asst OL coach Lunda Wells despite Oakland and other teams expressing interest in luring him away, per source. Wells will be Giants’ TE coach.

Does it suggest an increased focus on TE blocking.

Shurmeur has also coached both OL and TE's, and our old OL coach Flaherty had only coached TE's before coaching our last great OL.

According to a source, general manager Scott Perry, when he was with Orlando, would have taken either Burke or C.J. McCollum at No. 2 in 2013 if Cleveland had taken Victor Oladipo. Cleveland selected bust Anthony Bennett, Oladipo fell to Orlando and Burke to Utah at 9.

Perry wasn’t with the organization when Ntilikina was selected by Phil Jackson. Perry has his guy in Burke now. Two point-guard lottery picks — one an offensive specialist, one defensive — are better than one.

They have to dump Jack, and start Beasley and either Frank or Trey. They need to be the only 2 point guards. And both Trey and THjr can mentor Frank, as they both overcame big struggles.

Indications are that Craig Johnson, the running backs coach, will be retained by Shurmur, according to a source.

James Bettcher and the Arizona Cardinals pursued New York Giantsdefensive end Jason Pierre-Paul after he hit free agency during the 2015 offseason.
Bettcher and the Cardinals were convinced that Pierre-Paul's versatility and athleticism was a perfect fit for their defensive scheme as a hybrid outside linebacker and 5-technique defensive end.
"Heck yeah, we really went after him," Arians said, via NJ Advance Media.

I think they’re handling the Noah situation extremely poorly.

Yes, it's uninspiring, and he's a vet who got into it with a coach that is not doing a good job.

Danny Espinosa has a deal with the Yankees and will be a non-roster invitee at ST. This would be a lot more concerning if Girardi were still the manager.

The Los Angeles Clippers are reportedly sending face-of-the-franchise forward Blake Griffin to the Detroit Pistons.

The news comes from ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, who added that the Pistons are sending Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley, and Boban Marjanovic to Los Angeles as a part of the deal, as well as a first- and a second-round draft pick. In addition to Griffin, the Clippers will also reportedly be sending Brice Johnson and Willie Reed to Detroit.

That really does seem to indicate the Yanks are willing to let Torres and Andujar win second and third.

From a NY Post article that's mostly about Kevin Towers: "The Yankees hired former Marlins exec Marc DelPiano to their pro scouting department. DelPiano was among those let go after Jeter took over the Marlins last year. He served as the team’s VP of Player Development and has also worked for the Red Sox."

Just doing some googling, DelPiano is high on Jim Benedict, who was also fired, because he can supposedly fix pitchers.

Yanks lost a couple of guys to Miami, so it's good to see them keep adding to their scouting/development ranks. Kevin Towers was a great friend of Opp and Cash, and a lot of people around baseball.

Yanks trying to clear payroll to land Darvish.

The only one it really makes sense to move is Ellsbury, and I’m not sure you can move him. Trading Gardner only makes sense if they’re willing to play Frazier every day, and I don’t get the indication they want to do that (or lose another lefty hitter for that matter). In today’s era of dominant bullpens, trading Robertson probably doesn’t make sense either. Don’t think Darvish is gonna be a Yankee.

At 2:16 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Neither do I, but as I have said I would trade Gardner in a heartbeat.

If they trade Gardy, though it would suck, a reasonably healthy, immovable Ellsbury is a pretty close replacement.

We have a baaaaaad coach.

He isn’t Kenny Atkinson, who I think is terrific, as is the Celtics coach.

I want Fizdale, but it’s probably going to be Blatt. Knicks desperately need a wing and a pg.

Not picking a lane. People say Knife receive too much scrutiny to rebuild all at once, but they’ve been a lottery team even with Melo, and that trade obviously sucked.

They area fooling anyone but themselves.

BOSTON -- The New York Knicks don't look like a playoff team right now -- certainly not after that 30-point loss Wednesday night to a Boston Celtics team missing Kyrie Irving and Marcus Smart.

But you shouldn't expect that embarrassment to alter New York's plans at the trade deadline. At the moment, the Knicks have no intention of selling off assets at the Feb. 8 deadline and tanking the rest of the season. The club wants to remain competitive and fight for playoff position, while it's feasible. The Knicks enter play Thursday three games out of eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

Sports is a needed diversion for me in these bizarre times, and lately there is none from the thee teams I follow closely. Sucks.

The person responsible for playing Jack needs to go. And if that is Perry too, him as well.
