Yanks Stuff

The Yanks are 6-16 since they last won a series - and they really shouldn't be buying at the deadline.  In fact, they should be sellers again. I'm not saying this because I think they are bad. I'm saying it because some of the veterans are really hurting them.  In today's debacle, sure Pineda was terrible and Dellin was lost, but both Ellsbury and Headley had bobbles that cost the Yanks runs. We expect the young players to make some mistakes, but that's not what's happening. Yesterday, Carter's bobble cost them, and thankfully he's now gone. It's time to unload some of these other guys.  I have have no doubt the team could improve by doing so.

I think Cashman/Steinbrenner's are in it for the long haul. If they make a trade it likely will be a low level prospect for a aging veteran on a short contract or prospects to clean up the 40 man roster in advance of December Rule 5..If they can unload some current players for decent prospects, then they'd do it...no one will take Ellsbury ..

Hope they don't prove me wrong ..

I'd be shocked if they didn't acquire a reliever unless they get rid of the manager

It's in their long-term interest to get Betances right, but I'm not sure it's in their short-term interest to try and do so in a close-and-late situation. Unfortunately, Chapman hasn't inspired confidence, either, so I'm not sure there's a real answer to the pen woes.

Pineda needs to be made into a reliever or traded — preferably the former given the pen's struggles, as I think his stuff would play up there. I wouldn't be opposed to selling high on Gardner. As Rich said, I don't think Ellsbury is tradable. If enough people get healthy, I do think it's a better team than they've shown in the last month, I'm just not sure it wouldn't be better to let more young players go ahead and take their lumps this year regardless of the standings.

German showed potential until Girardi used him irregularly. He hasn't gone regularly to Green, despite showing some promising signs.

Some people say that Pineda isn't good in the first inning, but if he can empty the tank early knowing he would only be pitching an inning or two he might be better.

This is the first time, like the middle years of Torre's tenure, that Girardi doesn't have a perfect pen.

So if they want to keep them, they better make a perfect again one way or another.

Florial hit a Grand Slam!

There just isn't a quick fix here. Steinbrenner and Levine in particular are going to have to avoid the temptation for seeking quick fixes.

There is no quick fix in terms of making this a top team, but they can make a fix that will stop the bleeding. I think that's the direction they will likely go in.

Just to clarify, I'm not sure it will stop the bleeding, but Cashman could try to give Gerardi another reliever or 1Bman, because until proven otherwise that is his guy, even though he is currently the biggest threat to the plan.

LHP Justus Sheffield: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 6/1 GB/FB — 49 of 83 pitches were strikes (59%) … he left the game with the trainer, and afterwards manager Bobby Mitchell told Rob Terranova it’s his right oblique and Sheffield will see the doctor tomorrow … that stinks, obliques can take a while to heal, though at least it’s not his arm

RAB
4. First impression of Clint Frazier: Brian Cashman was not kidding around when he said that kid has “legendary” bat speed. I mean, I saw it in Spring Training, but that’s not really the same. Just about everything Frazier has put in play since being called up has been a rope. Also, he’s putting together quality at-bats. He’s seen 69 pitches in 14 plate appearances (4.93 per) and his swing rate on pitches out of the zone is 28.6%, better than the 30.7% league average, and his contact rate on pitches in the zone is 95.7%. The league average is 85.8%. Super duper small sample size and all that, but Frazier so far reminds me of Aaron Judge in the first week or so of the season. Remember that? Judge didn’t hit much that first week — he went 2-for-15 (.133) in his first five games this year — but he was on everything and having quality at-bats. Frazier has been the same way. The Yankees are probably going to send him down when Holliday returns and that’s fine. Frazier should be getting regular at-bats somewhere, and once Holliday returns, that somewhere figures to be Triple-A. I like what I’ve seen so far. That kid seems to have a plan and he can get the bat to the ball real quick.

Heyman has lost his mind

Oh god, did anyone read this nonsense, it has Randy Levine written all over it: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/crippling-injuries-greg-bird-mystery-dashing-yankees-season-article-1.3307161

“You really have to wonder what’s with this guy,” a Yankee insider complained to me earlier this week. “You’d think with Judge and Sanchez, the guys he came up through the system with, doing so well up here he’d want to be a part of this. Apparently not.”

Yea, I'm sure he doesn't want to come back and play. What a joke.

That article also says they're prepared to move him over the winter if he doesn't come back.

And yes, I was just about to post that that quote must have come from someone whose name rhymes with Dandy Ravine.

Why does Hal keep the asshole. I don't believe claims he makes them money. In fact, revenue has been trending down.

And props to Girardi for sticking up for Bird.

But he keeps using Clippard

Unreal.

So who gets the day off tomorrow after having an off day yesterday and several off days starting Monday?

At 9:07 PM, Blogger Rich said...

How can they not fire Girardi and DFA Clippard?

If it was Betances and Chapman who blew the season, I would understand the mindless compulsion to stick with them, but Clippard. How the $&&? did he become an elite player or Yankee legend?
