This Week on the Blog
Rough one for the Yanks, interesting one for the Knicks and Rangers, and just two more weeks till Giants training camp starts. Let's take a look at what's going on.
Yanks: Another heartbreaking loss last night that really featured unearned runs. Montgomery was off and inefficient, thanks to the D behind him. The middle of the pen was fine, and then Betances fell victim to bad D and his own lack of control, The Cubs have already made a big deal, and the Yanks a a small one. So trade season in underway. I hope Brian Cashman has realized that even if he goes out and gets more relievers and a starter, the veteran gaggle of Ellsbury, Gardner and Headley cannot be relied upot to play Playoff Baseball, so they're best hope would be a second WC and one and done, with this particular crew of vets. In fact, this is yet another season when the Yanks should sell. I have a feeling that they'll buy, so I'm praying they are smart about it and keep the guys I listed last week. Btw, Castro is back today and Wade is down. They don't care about defense.
Giants: Just two more weeks! And with all the Yankee and Knick issues, I haven't spent a moment thinking about the Giants OL till just now.
Rangers: With the retirement of Kevin Klein, the Rangers gained cap room. They may or may not still be looking of a C, though they have signed both their first rounders and they are both C's. I'd prefer to give JT Miller a chance. When they drafted him Gordie said he had a centerman's game, and he really is a playmaker. So, save the assets and give him a try.
Knicks: The Knicks had quite a week. First, they seemed to massively overpay for Ron Baker (the living tribute to John Rudd), and then it looked like they had no plan at all and that the Melo trade was eternally at the 2 yard line. Then it finally became clear when the Knicks went outside of their MSG pool of whirling execs and hired Scott Perry to be the new GM. Their first move after that was to "pause" the Carmelo trade talks. Perry and Mills want to try to get Melo to expand his list. In doing this, either by Melo actually expanding it, or pretending to expand it, Melo's agents will be under pressure to get Houston or Cleveland to step up with something that works. Ther are also reports that the Knicks are listening to offers for Lee and O'Quinn and searching for veteran PG.
So there you have it. Yanks should sell but probably won't. Giants two weeks away. Rangers could pull off a trade at any moment. And Knicks could pull of three trades starting whenever. Have a great week!

Yanks win! And both the Scranton and Trenton charters should be going. Sheesh!
Heller and Holder will probably have to go down for a few days, but they are part of the solution and why we don't need to trade for relievers.
Not sure how legit this guy is ... reported 3 hours ago? 5 teams?
The deal is in place to send Carmelo Anthony to Houston. Knicks are waiting to pull trigger on mega-deal involving 5 teams.

Seriously, Melo can block trades but he should not be able to demand one to specific teams. If the best players really wanted to play with him they would have already signed here as FA. BUT no one has.
Bryan Mitchell (26th man) and Domingo German were both recalled from Triple-A Scranton. Highly regarded lefty Caleb Smith was also called up from the RailRiders.
Jonathan Holder (three innings) and Ben Heller (two innings), who both played huge roles in the Yankees' 4-1, 16-inning win on Saturday, were optioned back to Triple-A Scranton.
Michael Pineda (right UCL tear) was transferred to the 60-day DL.
Caleb Smith is a major sleeper.
Needed that.

Chad Green Last 10 Games:

0.56 ERA

Never thought I would say this, but I would like them to bring Cessa back up and give him an extended look in the pen. I think he would do well in that role just like Green has.
Happy for Sabathia as he continues to have a rebound season. Easy guy to root for.
Two plus pitch pitchers, right? Makes sense then.
Frazier with 2 hits
Frazier, unfortunately, is going to end up being a victim of circumstance.
When Hicks comes back, you can't exactly justify benching him. You can't really justify benching Gardner either. Ideally, MLB's CBA has an amnesty clause that would allow the Yankees to get out of the Ellsbury deal, but it doesn't, so they're stuck with him until the remainder of his deal is short enough to where they'll eat the rest of it. Obviously, they aren't benching Judge. That leaves Frazier as the odd man out until September, because given the rotation's inability to consistently go six/seven innings, they can't really justify having a fifth outfielder on the team.
The only way I see this getting resolved is if they trade Gardner at the deadline, and I don't anticipate that, because it would signal they're "selling," which they don't want to do.
Ells will get hurt again or Gardy will be traded.
I've always favored Cessa for the pen. Once through the lineup is about all he can do.
Btw, I think if the Yanks win the night cap here, they will be in "buy" mode.
I don't think Frazier going down is such a bad thing, sure he can play up in MLB but I still think he needs to work on making more contact and putting the ball in play. Now that he has a taste of what MLB is like, he'll have plenty of motivation.
Meant "not" such a bad thing ..
If it's contact he needs to work on, he needs to be doing it in MLB. Sending him down doesn't do much good. Regardless, it'll only be for a month, and I've no doubt he's in the team's plans going forward.
Hicks has been good for 3 months, or even a little less. Not that your wrong but that should not earn him anything over Frazier.
Reverse mojo alert: Cooper is very unimpressive.
Well, it's now obvious that Tanaka won't opt-out.
Which could be a blessing in disguise, as I expect him to rebound.
Judge has lost 1 hr to a bad call, and 2 to great catches. He should have 33 or at least 31 not 30. I think Frazier has to learn it on the fly. He's one of our few impactful bats.
What's a price worth paying for Robertson and Todd Frazier? Is there one?
Frazier's contract expires after this year, Robertson's after next year, so neither one would be a potential hangup for 2019. That said, the A's Alonso seems like a more attractive short-term option for first (he's also a free agent at the end of the season), and the White Sox would probably want a blue-chip prospect or two for Robertson, whose deal isn't all that unreasonable. I would pass, personally.
Me too.
In a vacuum, I'd love to have Robertson back, as he's not only a good reliever, but he's also someone who graduated from the same high school as me. I think the team would balk at that salary, though, because I'm pretty sure the Yankees want to get under the luxury tax cap for '18.
The only MLB player to graduate my hs was also a reliever, Ron Perronski, but he is much older than I am, and also lived across the street, but I remember his father, not him.
Frazier batting 2nd. He rests Sanchez a lot.
