Pineda Has Partially Torn UCL

Sometimes guys perform poorly because they are hurt. Turns out the ever frustrating Michael Pineda has been pitching with a partially torn UCL. They've tried a bunch of different things with this particular injury, including TJS, something that's like TJS but isn't TJS, which Betances had years ago, and rest, which has always just delayed the TJS.  Given his coming UFA status, we have most likely seen the end of Big Mike as a Yankee.  Get well!

The biggest tease in recent NYY history.

It's not a second guess for me to say he should have been traded when he was pitching well because I have been saying it for years.

And that Randy on LoHud got this right since the trade his mechanics predisposed him to injury and should have been a reliever to mitigate the risk.

Joel Sherman said it best: #Yankees clearly won Pineda-Montero trade and yet it played out as something less than a victory #Mariners

The opportunity costs of not trading a top five prospect for something more useful were very significant.

Yeah, if you were gonna trade him, trade him for an established ace outside of what Phil calls the injury matrix, or a big bat.

I don't think any of you understand what Montero's value around the league was when this trade went down. There was not a SINGLE organization that believed he could remain at catcher and there wasn't a huge belief in him being passable at 1B either.

Most organizations do not trade established ace for a bat only prospect, no matter how good. Pineda was fresh off his 1st season in the bigs, showed ace potential and was cost controlled for 5 years. It was a gamble that in the end, we still won but the idea that Montero could have gotten something more significant is pure fantasy.

I won't spend anymore time down this rabbit hole because everyone has an opinion in hindsight without actually knowing anything.

Pineda had a bad second half and minor league injuries.

2011 1st half: 3.03 ERA
2nd: 5.02 ERA

Then, his velo was way down in ST and they kept pitching him until his shoulder gave out.

Billy, you would know better than me, so I yield to you on this one.

Why is Frazier sitting vs. the lefty today?

At 1:00 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

Because the Yanks could predict his velo would be down when he entered ST...And 2nd half splits for a rookie who had surpassed his most innings in a season, wow I'm sure that's never happened and is a SURE indicator the guy is hurt and/or not the stud he was in the 1st half. Grasping at straws with this, Rich.

I agree Mike, I don't understand why Frazier isn't playing today. Literally Ellsbury/Headley/Torreyes might go 0-9.

I may be off on this, but it also feels like Wade isn't getting the playing time he should be.

Bottom line on Pineda, they took a chance on a good arm and he didn't live up to expectations. Hopefully, they'll get Otani this offseason -- and I would even be fine with it requiring signing Darvish as well.

I starting to really hate Girardi.

At 1:42 PM, Blogger Rich said...

The point is the 2nd half of 2011 was a red flag of risk. This was reported in real time. There were stories about damaged goods. And there were always his poor mechanics.

Predicting ST velo is irrelevant. It's what was done and not done after it surfaced.

Not playing Frazier is about Ellsbury's feelings.

If you insist on Ellsbury play Holliday at 1B, DH Frazier their hottest hitter.

Cashman has recovered from some very curious decision-making.

Girardi remains a blind spot.

Unfortunately, there is little doubt in my mind Frazier is getting sent down once Ellsbury is ready.

You mean, Hicks, right?

At 8:10 PM, Blogger Rich said...

No need to buy anything.

At 8:11 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Just DL Chapman

At 8:16 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Yes, I meant Hicks.

Chapman is a problem. He has an ERA north of 5 since coming off the DL. He isn't generating swings and misses, which is likely a result of overuse last season. To make matters worse, Girardi doesn't manage his pen like a meritocracy — in other words, he is going to continue running Chapman out there in the ninth no matter how many times he allows a small army to reach base. Like Rich said, DL'ing him is the only hope.

At 8:49 PM, Blogger Rich said...

And meritocracy is why Frazier has to play everts day. Stop the Girardi bullshit.

At 9:25 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I'm of the opinion the Yankees should eat Ellsbury's contract following the end of the 2018 season. If Chapman doesn't opt out following the end of the '19 season, it will mean he hasn't performed up to standards, so perhaps buy him out by then, too.

At 9:48 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think Chapman was abused last year. The way Torre abused Gordon and others. I think NEXT YEAR he will be back, and I think that because he is a remarkable and rare athlete, and I suspect a prouder one than he lets on.

But tonight he didn't call the IBB nor did he commit the error and thus he's getting more blame than he deserves for getting 3 soft grounders.

At 11:28 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

A fair point, but at the same time, he's been awful since coming back from the DL, and he isn't missing bats. He isn't easy to root for to begin with, so when he's not performing up to standard, it's easy to be over him.

At 5:36 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Not playing Frazier is just so f'ing stupid. Its infuriating.

Sorry, some hitters are just good and or hot and the other shit becomes noise:

Girardi thought about using the right-handed hitting Clint Frazier against Red Sox lefty Drew Pomeranz on Friday night, but noted Pomeranz’s ability to handle right-handed hitters.

“I have seen that against us,’’ said Girardi, who started the left-handed hitting Brett Gardner in left and Jacoby Ellsbury in center. “For whatever reason, I think our left-handers pick up his stuff better than the right-handers. If you look at the numbers, it has kind of held true the last couple of years.’’
