Knicks Re-Sign Hardaway Jr. to a 71M/4YR Offer Sheet

This is pure Thursday Night Craziness - unless something else is also happening.  The Knicks tonight have signed their traded away former #1 pick Tim Hardaway Jr. to a 4 year 71M offer sheet that the Hawks now have 2 days to match.  This is curious for a few reasons.  First: Tim is a 2 and they have two 2's already in Courtney Lee and Damyean Dotson, who has looked like a steal in Summer League.  So that means Lee is getting traded.  Second, it's tying up cap for a two when what they have wanted is a veteran one to guide Frank.  It's just very weird and you have to wonder what else is going on.  They'll have to rescind their rights to Rose in order to re-sign Tim, so that means no sign and trade there.  But could this mean a Melo trade is already in place?  If not this is just odd.  Very odd.

It is kind of curious, but looking at his stats, he has improved and he looks stronger than when he was in NY. It's a lot of money though.

Haven't been able to go back to sleep since I saw this notification at 4am...

I would like to think this is a precursor to other potential moves but Mills doesn't strike me as a guy with much of a big plan and this is the Knicks

The Hawks have two days to match the offer, but it appears that the club is unlikely to do so. Per ESPN’s Kevin Arnovitz, Atlanta projected that Hardaway would get an offer sheet totaling around $45 million.

The Knicks blew that offer out of the water and opened themselves up for criticism in the process.

Yep, if moves are coming, they should have been done first. We could have gotten at least a 2nd for a sign and trade(Rose), throwing away assets (not like we have many) for something that could have waited or not necessary at all. Also, cap space is an ASSET, now we don't have that anymore. I'm thinking Mills fell in love with Hardaway when we drafted him and probably thinks more highly of him than the rest of the NBA.

Not sure who's giving us any assets for Rose but I agree they hopefully explored all S&T possibilities for him. Should have just moved him for Rubio when they had the chance.

Lee needs to be moved immediately.

I still hope there's a bigger plan here but this seems like Mills being desperate to show he can be the president.

Not sure how this shows Mills is president-worthy, but my father wasn't a billionaire so I'm not as smart as Dolan

Plumlee waived.

Mills better have Lee and Melo deals in his to do folder.

On a related note, if he could somehow trade both to recoup cap room while gaining picks/young assets, it would demonstrate a plan.

I think they must have a Lee trade ready to go for as soon as Atlanta declines.

I didn't say this deal shows he's president worthy but he's definitely going to try and make his case and not stand still.

Hardaway did improve significantly last season, averaging over 18ppg in the last 6 weeks he was a starter + playoffs. Maybe there's some upside since he is only 25 but definitely seems excessive in terms of $$.

There has to be a deal lined up with Lee since they are redundant, hopefully getting us back a pick of some sort and maybe a PG.

Sorry my comment wasn't direct at you. It was just a general comment with regard to Isola's column.

All good. Kentavius Caldwell Pope just became a UFA, I feel like he's a better fit but what do I know.

He probably was. Whether it's timing issues or bad judgment, it's hard to say.

It raises the question of which player(s) really got better under the tutelage of the Jackson regime and what is being done no cto asemble coaches who can teach.

Newsday has an article with anon sources says they would keep Lee. If so, given their lack of cap room, is this a play by Mills to make the job unattractive to good execs?

Insane!!

Rich, I think that's a play for leverage. Look at how the Celts are having the scramble for cap room for Hayward. The Knicks are trying to maintain value.
