Yanks Bullpen Going Forward

That the Yanks decided not to pursue David Robertson, but instead take the pick could actually be showing us progress.  I would have gladly welcomed back DRob, but not because he has proved he can close -- but instead because he also proved he could come in and get the job done in the seventh and eighth in his earlier years.  Impact relievers, not closers, are the way to go and the place to spend your bullpen money these days.   The Yanks currently have two dominant guys in Betances and Miller, and a sort of intriguing guy like Wilson to go with Warren and Kelley.

That's not a bad pen, and if they need a closer, they could use Warren or Kelley.   Meantime they have a bunch of interesting prospects led by Lindgren and Rumbelow, both of whom could challenge for spots in the Spring and, who together form a right left combo that could some day be as dominant as Betances and Miller should be.

So, while they are looking for more stuff, let's hope it's not more relievers.  The cupboard is well stocked.  And if they must hire one it should just be a designated closer on a one year deal.   Amazingly, this could be a great pen, even without DRob.

I think there is something to be said for keeping your best homegrown players to foster a culture that is unique to the team.

If a team prioritizes that, then they would make an effort to extend their best homegrown players well before they reach free agency.

We know that Robertson wanted to negotiate; we don't know about Cano.

They made a mistake, and they made an even bigger mistake by not trading both players once they decided that they wouldn't negotiate in the timeframe I referenced above, in order to maintain an illusion of contending for no other reason than to make a little money over the very short-term at the cost of having a better chance of making more money over an extended period of time by fielding a better team.

Yet they take on big contracts for players like Prado and give out a big contract to McCann even though they have good homegrown, cost-controlled options that would enable them to spend more smartly in other areas.

This idiocy is a big reason why the franchise is in decline.

Scherzer wants 200m, Lester looks like Cubs or Sox

I don't understand why they aren't blowing Lester away. They piss money away on mediocrity with regularity. Clearly he's not that, and if picks matter, they should prove it by signing him over Scherzer, like now.

Lester is the only sane move, if they want another top tier pitcher right now. Won't cost pick, won't cost prospects. And we need to keep both picks, and sign the Yoans.

Cubs got Lester. 6/155, We have no good move left for a top tier starter that won't cost a pick or prospects.
