Yanks at the Winter Meetings, Pt. 1
The Yankee contingent will arrive at the Winter Meetings any minute now, and word is already spreading that they are willing to go to 4 years for both Robertson and Headley. The codicile being floated that either deal would be for a lesser AAV than their three year offers. Signing DRob would be fine, as long as they don't then blow their first round pick on another FA.
Signing Headley woud be more problematic because it would force Prado to 2B, and in the near term block Refsnyder and Pirela. What's more, he's got a bad back, so even if they were to get him at a reasonable AAV, his health could render him untradeable.
As or right now it seems that they are waiting for Brandon McCarthy on the pitching side, and that would be okay as long as they don't double down with a Scherzer or some other pitcher with a QO.

I'm completely against Headley and McCarthy signings but I expect both because of the reasons I listed on the other thread: all they want to do is to pretend to contend.
As long as Hal owns the team, it's going to be a clusterfuck.
I like McCarthy more than you do, but agree on Headley, let someone else buy his bad back and just let the kids play.
One of the things I like about McCarthy, though, is he doesn't cost the pick, and can be had for less than Lester or the guys who would cost the pick.
Robertson has consistency and is a homegrown player. No problem with him. I would hate signing Headley for the reasons listed above. Let Prado man third and Refsnyder second.
I disagree with the previous posters here. I would love Headley back, but on a 3 year deal. I think he will last 3 years, but any longer - that's a gamble with a bad back and all.
McCarthy is the choice for pitcher from this FA crop. If they need to make a "splash", then let it be Lester, although he will be over[paid if he gets 7 years, and 150 million+. he is 31. Greinke and CC were 28 when they both their mega-deals. Cliff Lee was 32 or so when he got his, and only landed a 5 year deal.
The problem with McCarthy is that they would end up with a rotation with four starters who have had (or could have in Tanaka's case) significant injury issues. That's why I wanted to keep Greene. Add in Nova, and that's all five.
Borrowing from Bush I, "It wouldn't be prudent."
I know a lot of people don't care for Madden but he said he's 100% sure they will not sign Max or Lester.
Bryan Mitchell could be Greene 2. He was a better prospect.
Where we differ is that I would keep both, if only as a developmental hedge, but that doesn't change my view on McCarthy or any pitcher with his injury history except on a one year deal.
I just think the trade was probably fair value. It's not like we traded him for nothing. I'd rather still have him, but I'm also glad we didn't spend more acquiring Andrus and paying for him for 8 years or Tulo and buying all decline.
There are some more guys, like Greene in the system who are just as capable as a sudden jump and providing us a bridge to Severino and Clarkin and whoever else pops up.
Let's assume that it was. I still don't like it given the makeup of this team because they need offense more than defense, so I would rather have a defensively challenged SS who can hit. On the Yankee teams before the decline and roster incompetence, Gregorius would make more sense.
And sure, that's true about Andrus/Tulo, but I can't take much solace from lesser incompetence.
Who was going to play SS if we didn't make that trade?
I fully expect Headley and Robertson back
That points to the reason I am so anti-Cashman now.
It wasn't a surprise that Jeter was fading from the scene; he has been pretty bad offensively and defensively for most of the last five years.
What was the plan? Brendan Ryan?
IOW, no plan.
So whatever. Today it's Gregorious, tomorrow it may be someone else, and the day after that, another player.
Yet when they may have drafted and developed well, like Refs, there may be no chance because his spot got taken by the last no-plan plan. Rinse. Repeat.
I guess it really doesn't matter what they do as long as they make money.
If they are merely leaking rumors of their desire to trade for a big reliever if Robertson leaves in order to pressure him, fine.
But if they actually do it, Cashman is dumber than even I think.
One mediocre pitcher Cashman has pursued twice off the board:
AP Source: Hammel, Cubs Agree to $20M, 2-Year Deal
That was out early in the day.
I share your hope that they are just trying to lock up DRob.
It would be an insult to their system to not realize they have enough homegrown relievers.
By the way, if the plan is you use Betances and Miller for more than three outs, it shouldn't block Lindgren or Rumbelow, since Betances and Miller can't do it every day.
Btw, we're apparently not out on Lester.
Realistically, his agent may have permission to use the Yanks to drive up the price for the Sox, Cubs or SF.
FWIW (IA)
Jon Heyman 4m
No real evidence yanks are in on lester. If they go for big starter, they prefer scherzer.
Wow an insider fight LOL
That's from Scherzer's agent''s schill, of course. We'll see what happens. I wouldn't be surprised if they passed on both.
Marshand says Lester to Yanks rumor a buzz
I hope he's right, if the Yankees are insistent on signing a starter.
Fwiw Crasnick thinks it's legit... He's usually pretty good, I guess we'll see.
I'll believe it when I see it. Again it's not what I would do in a perfect world but given what they want to do it makes the most sense.
Heyman says we are actively trying to keep D-rob
they should have done that during the season
Should have locked him up two years ago.
Cano too actually. The irony may be that a reasonable deal may have been doable if he had kept Boras, who cares about relationships.
Roc Nation, otoh, is trying to make a name for themselves, NTTAWWT from their p.o.v., and they're doing it pretty well.
They were willing to go 4 for 36 fir Miller but not 4 for 40 for Robertson?
