Yanks Greene is Great Again
The Yankees rookie starter Shane Greene was back to being great tonight. In a game they sort of had to win, Greene held them to 2 runs off 5 hits and a walk, and K'd 8 of them over 7 innings. The offense was, once again strange as they scored 8 runs in the third, without the benefit of a homer-- but by getting 9 straight hits off of Price! Then they didn't score again. Warren gave up a run in the 8th, then they used Betances for the 9th with a 5 run lead. Ponderous. Weird sequencing and a bit of squeezing by the ump cost Betances a run with two outs, and lead to him facing Cabrera with one on. He K'd Cabrera on 4 pitches, getting him with 98 out of the zone away. Shouldn't have given up a run, though. Big win.

This was one of those "You can't predict baseball, Suzyn" games.
But think about it. Cashman admitted that he tried to trade for Price, Samardzija, and Hammel.
If he had been successful, Greene may have never received an extended opportunity.
And btw, Girardi had Robertson up in the 9th.
That's why I want to see Brian Mitchell, too. Greene is very much like Wang, but with K's. Great arm prospect, but took so long people forgot. Mitchell is also similar to that. And of course Guidry was like that, and we traded Gura before he was ready.
Actually Gura came up with the Cubs and the Yanks got him at what should have been the start of his prime. I was little, and thought he'd come up through the system.
I have a distant recollection that Martin hated Gura.
Googling reveals that I am right:

If you were a Yankee fan in the mid-Seventies you’s have thought this poor guy was a mixture of Satan and Liberace. Billy Martin hated Larry Gura for some reason and would on a regular basis question his toughness,
He definitely hated Ken Brett and that's why George Brett alway hated the Yankees.
Martin hated Elliot Maddox as well. Gura was picked up to fill the starting rotation when they traded half the pitching staff for Chambliss and Tidrow (a trade vilified at the time but which turned out just fine).
He also hated Ken Holzman.
Greene was fabulous. Not great, but very good, and he again gave the Yankees length.
I have no problem with Betances pitching the 9th. He had not pitched in 4 days, and I would rather he knock off the rust in a blowout (as rare as they are for the Yankees these days) then in a 1 run game tomorrow.
BTW - one of the things holding back Greene was his control. Since he came into the Yankees organization he had a lack of control, as evidenced by his career walk rate - until 2013. Something clicked in 2013, and he really built up his prospect status.
Tanaka had a good simulated game. I am not sure why Girardi i has so much input in his rehab schedule.
If Torre was using Betances this often, he would be getting killed.
Who is Lobstein anyway?
