Yanks Name 7 For the AFL

The Yanks are sending some brand name hitters and some interesting pitchers to the AFL.  The hitters include; Aaron Judge, Eric Jagielo, Greg Bird and Tyler Austin.   All four have been coming on lately, with only Judge having a really consistent health year.    The pitchers are Alex Smith, Brandon Pinder and Caleb Cotham (who always seems to be in rehab mode).   Smith and Pinder are relievers, and it will be interesting to see if they try to stretch out one or both of them.

Anyway, we have reason to follow whatever team they are on, guys can make headway with this AFL opportunities.

I bet Pinder is going because he is Rule 5 eligible this off-season. The Yankees probably want to see a bit more before deciding what to do with him.

Bird, Austin and Jagielo all missed a decent amount of time this year, so this is probably being used to get them another 40-50 ABs.

Probably the best talent the Yankees ever sent to the AFL.

Well, we're not going to max out veterans for more young assets as this deadline approaches, so the focus has to be on Judge, etc.

I think two of Judge, Jagielo, Austin, and Bird have a chance to stick here long-term.

If they had any sense all four, or 3 of the 4 would.

That's the big question.

If we are going to be honest, Jeter is killing them right now both at the plate and in the field.

Jack Z got an extension. That was one place I was hoping we could lose Cashman to.

Jete's almost done. I'm grateful he spend his whole career as a Yankee and that we won a ton with him. We should have won more, and that we didn't has almost never been his fault.

It's truly a shame at least one of the mid-2000s Yankees didn't win a title. Year after year, they choked in the playoffs, be it against the Sox in '04, the Tigers in '06 or the Indians in '07.

I hope the Yanks are sending these guys to the AFL to help their evaluation as to which can make it to the bigs, not to showcase them for trades. I'd love to see all 4 make it, but it's up to them to take advantage of the opportunity. We'll see.

I'm glad Jeter is retiring as a Yankee and at least he got to go out showing that he could still hit like a major leaguer after breaking his leg. This season hardly counts against the championships and great seasons he has given us. Just like I am glad I got to see Mickey Mantle play when he was a shadow of what he once was. One of the good things about being a Yankee fan is that they have always had a star who was a career Yankee, even in the worst of years. In my lifetime as a fan, Mantle, Stottlemyre, Munson, Guidry, Mattingly, and now the "core 4" (plus Bernie and excluding Pettitte, although Pettitte would never have gone to Houston except that George Steinbrenner was such a jerk to Stottlemyre). Compare that to the Mets -- if David Wright retires as a Met, he will be the first career Met star.

They made a critical mistake with both Jeter and A-Rod, who were the two most important players on the team for the last 10 years.

It was (or should have been) obvious to any competent person in their front office that acquiring (since they can't develop) a young 3B/SS to offset their decline should have been their main priority for the last five years.

Montero, AJack, IPK, etc. could have been used in any prospective trade.

Of all their failures, that is the biggest one.
