Yanks Win

Special guest Yankee Carlos Beltran homered, and the pitching staff was good enough to hold the White Sox to three runs.    It was mostly the B bullpen of Kelley/Warren creating the bridge to the A closer Robertson, but after Kelley gave up run, relief ace Dellin Betances has to come in to get the final out of the 7th. Argh!  Kuroda got his ninth win.  Now trade him.

There was a disturbing report earlier that the Yanks wouldn't go higher than 40M to Rusney Castillo because they had added Martin Prado at the deadline.  In a nutshell, that's just what's wrong with this team and why they'll continue to be hard to watch for the next several years.

If true, told ya. Damn, I hate being right about bullshit.

One more point. This is Hal's m.o. He is willing to spend when it looks like things are falling apart. But now he thinks this team can tread water (contend at the margins), so he pops the champagne.

As far as who makes the allocation decisions, who knows? It's on all of them.

I'm not sure if making the playoffs helps or hurts any longer term planning.

The rumor came from Heyman -- I take it with a grain of salt. As I posted in the other thread, Castillo at 72mil costs us 108mil -- Even for what he got, I think you're paying for more decline years than peak. Still don't think he's the guy you break the bank for.

It should be 5 years prime and 2 decline, but I also like the other Cubans better because they are younger.

Also, he's been comped to Rickey Henderson, body type-wise and Rickey lasted a long time.

I agree with Billy — Castillo could prove me wrong, but I don't think he's worth $108M in total spending.

Is McCann? It is about priorities. Let's see if they sign any. My guess is no.

If the priority is Yoan Moncada, then IMO they made the right choice. (At least without the benefit of hindsight.)

To answer your question, McCann (in and of himself) coming into last offseason was probably worth that. Obviously, he's yet to live up to his billing. But given the depth of the Yankees' system at catcher, you wonder if the money was better spent elsewhere.

That's what I mean. They gamble on brands, not on raw ability. It's like investing. Buy established manes, but when you have money, and they do, allocate some to higher risk assets too. They have passed and it is limiting their ceiling.

Agree with LINJ on investing in some assets with higher risk but in my honest opinion, I think there was too much risk without too much reward with Castillo. I could be wrong but time will tell if it was worth it to pass.

We need to seem them spend big on any Cuban. So far we haven't. If they do get one or more of the next ones, then maybe it was about Castillo. If they sign none, then the problem is larger.
