Javy Vazquez Redux?

The Yankees are reportedly in the process of re-aquiring Javy Vazquez as well as Boone Logan for Melky Cabrera, Mike Dunn and a prospect. Not terribly inspiring. Vazquez has a nasty habit of following a good year with a bad year and he's coming off a great year. Boone Logan is a lefty reliever and we really can't evaluate this till we know who the other prospect is.

We're working on getting a hitter.

If this sets up a Holliday signing, I'm ok. Anything less and it will be disappointing.

I'm hoping it's Holliday and not Damon.

The biggest negative of this trade, all things being equal, is that Hughes or Joba will be in the pen. Or they made an internal decision, despite their public comments, that Joba should pitch out of the pen.

I am told that this does NOT re-open the door for Johnny Damon to come back to the Bronx.

Rich,

I hear it's probably Hughes to the pen.

Phil,

Then I question their thought process.

I didn't hear it from them. So we'll see.

I did hear we're after an OF who can hit.

#Yankees say Melky departure does not open door to Damon nor put Bay/Holliday in play. Still saying all too expensive

At 7:46 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

That's still just a bargaining position.

I would think they have to clear some payroll.

Phil

Are you upset about losing Vizcaino?

At 8:37 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Rich,

I would have liked to have held onto him. But looking at Javy's other numbers, I'm thinking it's still a good trade.

of course, it can't fully be judged till we see who's in left.

Feinsand thinks it DeRosa...which I would hate.

At 8:40 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I doubt it's DeRosa.

Not a fan of giving up Vizcaino at all.

I hope Hal okays Holliday, not enthused with Damon or Reed Johnson...

Law:

...The main knock against him [Vazquez] has been his difficulty pitching in tight spots—he’s less effective by about 100 points of opponents’ OPS out of the stretch—but he’s so good out of the windup and good enough from the stretch that he can be one of the most valuable pitchers in his league in most years.

[...]

The key player in this trade for Atlanta is Arodys Vizcaino, who becomes one of the top five prospects in Atlanta’s system and gives them a trio of potential number one or two starters in the low minors with Julio Teheran and Randall Delgado. Vizcaino, who pitched at short-season Staten Island this year, has a live fastball that sits 91-93 MPH and will touch a little higher. He throws a curveball that flashes plus and should miss bats at the big league level when he reaches it. He already has good feel for pitching and just needs experience and a little cleanup in his delivery, as he often finds his arm slot drifting down at which point he starts to sling the ball instead of just throwing it.

[...]

For the Yankees, adding Vazquez means that either Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes will start the year in the bullpen, and probably signals that the Yankees feel that one of them belongs there, most likely Hughes at this point. If the organization believed that both pitchers would eventually work out as starters in the majors, they’d be more willing to give them both rotation spots and back them up with a lesser option than Vazquez, who was, as you might have heard, the second-best pitcher in the National League this year.

At this point, the Yankees now have a rotation close to that of the Red Sox, and they could very well enter 2010 a better team on paper than they were at the same time before 2009.

Phil, was it you or Rich that said it usually takes a full year for velocity to increase after the type of injury Joba had?

At 11:40 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Me, having it heard David Cone say it on ESPN 1050 when discussing Joba's drop in velo.

I just can't believe we will settle for Mark DeRosa for left field. There has to be more to this tale.

At 11:52 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Left will either be Johnny Damon or Reed Johnson unless, Boras comes to the Yanks with Holliday on a deal Hal okays.

At 12:07 PM, Blogger John in Lakeland Fl. said...

Reed Johnson does not give us anymore than DeRosa. Bring back Johnny if we can't have Holliday.

At 12:36 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Reed mashes lefties, which they like.

At 1:44 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Lame. Would have been better off letting Hughes and Joba round out the rotation, and signing Matt.

LAME.

And how in the world is it going to be less than last years when, with the addition of Vazquez, it's already OVER last years?

At 2:05 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Cashman on the outfield: "We'll continue to look at any remaining pieces, but it's not going to be a big piece...Ugh!

At 2:09 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I really hope he's bluffing. Not signing Holliday would be a huge mistake. There is nothing in the farm that could man left for the foreseeable future.

At 2:17 PM, Blogger Yanks88 said...

I agree with you MikeK, but we honestly don't know if this is a negotiations ploy or if the yankees plan to fill that position with another guy.

I can't help but think back to after the yanks signed AJ and CC and they said there was no way we were getting another big piece.
