The Rotation

The Yanks face a decision with their rotation: to add a risky starter or to stand pat and see what they have in Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes and the others. This is a subset of a bigger issue. The only way the Yanks are ever going to significantly lower their payroll is to start producing championship level players for their farm. It's a simple truth. They're never going to want to stop winning, so until the farm can produce championship level players again, as it has done in the past, the payroll isn't gonna get much below 200M. With this in mind, both Joba and Phil have both shown they can get out major league hitters. But for injuries to both of them, we might already know what we have in them. But as it stands right now, they may very well be better than anyone on the market right now, but they might never get their chances.

The Yank are gonna have enough offense to stay in the race while we find out about Phil and Joba, one or both of them could come up huge. It wasn't very long ago that they were both projected as top of the rotation starters. So why not give them a few months to show what they can do now that they've been around the bigs for awhile? We'll have more tradeable assets at the deadline thane we have now, so why not? Joba was a very good 4 before they started the innings plan. Hughes was coming around before Wang came back and he went to the pen. So let's get Holliday, and let these two guys develop.

Joba and Phil will be fine. I think they both can go out and get 10 to 12 wins with a powerful lineup. They will have some off games, but they will continue to learn. Holliday will solidify the offense. Perhaps next year we can entice Cliff Lee to replace Pettitte. Go Yanks.

The Yanks might be better off signing Duscherer than Sheets. Duscherer has experience in the pen, and shouldn't have problems adjusting back to it if he falters as a starter and Joba and Phil prove they can be a #4 and #5.

The open question is whether or not Joba regains his velocity. It was mentioned during the broadcast of one of the playoff games that the Yankees formulated his innings cap in consultation with Dr. Andrews. I doubt they would have done that if his shoulder didn't require ongoing monitoring.

If his velocity returns, he can be a top tier starter even if his mental approach isn't exactly optimal. If it doesn't, then it becomes another thing he has to master.

On the bright side, Cone has said that it takes time to regain arm strength after such an injury. If he's right, perhaps Joba is on track for a rebound.

Rich,

They probably talked to Dr. Andrews because Joba had, had a mix of starting and relief innings and they wanted to make sure they came up with a number that recognized the two different jobs he had already done.

That makes sense, Phil, but if Cone is right, the arm strength, as it relates to the shoulder injury, is a factor in whether or not he regains his velocity, so it makes sense that Andrews would have input in how Joba is used in order as to maximize the chances that his velo will return.

Joba is more suited for the BP so he can let it go with every pitch.

Hughes should get/win the 5th spot in ST.

Joba was too good as a starter in 2008 prior to the injury to put back in the pen at this point.

Rich,

I'm Phil the Thrill over at LoHud now. The other Phil didn't understand that I was bolded first and linked to my own site. So I just changed to spare anyone the confusion.

I figured that out when I put my cursor over the name.

I used to call my brother that.

My friends used to call me that growing up.

OT, Nate's agents wants him to be traded. Granted, Nate acted like a jerk a times, but D'Antoni is a really, really stubborn guy.
