Day 2 Preview

Last year, the Yanks kicked off Day 2 by taking prep signability OF Ryder Green in round 3. They went 400K above slot to get it done and that was accrued by going both a bit and a lot under slot with the next 7 picks. Now I don't particularly think, good as they might be, the three guys yesterday should go over slot. Sure, Volpe has a Vandy commit, but his slot is already over 2M, and without a single plus tool, his money coming out of college as a junior is not likely to be as high. We'll see what happens, but the teams should probably call bluffs more than they do. Anyway, getting Green last year was a pleasant surprise (maybe he'll play in SI? - the disappearing draft picks is another issue) and we'll see if they prep again here in three or whether they start saving up.  They've done it both ways - ie loading up top or going for an over slot in 8, or another later top 10 slot.

Last year, after surprising us with Green, they showed the depth of their scouting acumen by plucking power arms from unusual places, like Bucknell. They got even funkier on Day 3, so we'll see if they kept the funk going this year with similar searches.

As always, it would be a good thing to add some lefty pitching, but not at the expense of quality.  Organizationally, they might need some power hitting 1B's and are always in need around the infield. And, of course, let's hope they get some more power arms with crazy spin rates.

Or let's see if they take a  Leiter world, and Vandy, one more time.  Leiter and Volpe are teammates and maybe they have a plan.

It does sound like Volpe may be an undersign, and if MLB really expects the draft to become a big-time TV event, they need a system where guys are drafted solely in the order of their ability.

I'm sick of the pool system.
