This Week on the Blog

Alright, this week so the Yanks keep on keeping on, the Giants start participating in their annual OTA's, the Rangers introduce John Davidson, and the Knicks not do anything stupid. One month from now, the Yanks, Rangers and Knicks will all have had their drafts. So fun stuff on the way. Let's take a look at this week.

Yankees: The banged up Yanks have been the beasts of baseball since about game 15. A lot of it has dad to do with the pitching, and the heroics of analytic pick-ups like DJ and Voit. But, really, what we are seeing is 22 year old Gleyber Torres break out, and Gary Sanchez bounce back. Those two have been amazing, and Gleyber isn't just hitting jacks again't the O's. he getting on base and holding his own at shortstop, which isn't very good news for Didi Gregorious. Didis starting his rehab assignment this will and could be back soon, But when he does, he'll have to play really well to stay a Yankee - or be huge trade bait at the deadline.  Speaking about the deadline, Clint Frazier has been mixed up in trade talks for the past two years. But when he is right, which he seems to be now, he's showing a little too much to consider moving him.

Don't forget, the draft is a little early this year, running from 6/3 to 6/5 and the Yanks do have an extra pick.

Giants: OTA's have been pretty businesslike, as reports of DJ's talent and athleticism keep growing. With the OL pretty settled, the Giants may be looking for another rotational pass rusher., like Nick Perry ex of the Packers and of USC.  He might be the fit they are looking for for Bettcher's amoebic 3-4.  In sort of surprising news, Corey Ballentine was able to do position drills as the week progressed.  He may be the most athletic of all the young corners, and we should have all of them going by training camp. And if you're not having visions of long armed CB's Beal and Baker manning the corners, you're not seeing the full picture.

Rangers: the Ranger FO should be back from the World Championship this week just in time to attend the NHL Combine.  In the Clark/Gorton scouting era, the combine has been a part of the building process going all the way back to the Gomez trade, which netted the Ranger Ryan McDonagh - who'd lit it up at the combiner, as did Chrise Kreider and K'Andre Miller.  So it's a big deal for the Rangers, who already know what they are going to do at 2, but have 8 more picks as well as veteran players like Kreider they can trade to get pick betweeen 2 and 20,  So they really have to see what the want. It's going to be a big offseason for the Rangers and, as we've seen, it already started.

Another thing they might do is hire a new AHL coach. They parted with thos old staff a few weeks ago and it's a surprise they haven't named a new staff yet. A big part of what they want to do involves player development and Hartford hasn't been pulling its weight. We saw this when Libor Hajek was havinga sort of nothing AHL season, before coming up and looking damn good before he got hurt.  Why wasn't there a system in place that would have let him show that at Hartford. I'm hoping Quinn knows a division 2 collegiate coach who's looking for a fresh challenge who can come in, echo Quinn's system and really focus on player development.

Knicks: The Knicks continue scouting and looking at trade a free agent options.  I don't much trust these guys yet, so we'll have to see what happens. The wheel of free agent targets seemed to spin toward Kemba Walker this week. I think you'll remember that that's who I thought they'd end up with after the KP trade. That would still be sub-optimal - especially now that he's qualified for a SuperMax deal. That seem like's it's right up David Mills's alley. This could get awful again.

So there it is, Yanks defying the odds, Giants business as usual, Rangers headed to the combine, and we should be nervous about the Knicks.  Have a great one!

Even against a shit team Happ is Crapp. He is a long reliever, nothing more.

It was a quality start. 3 runs over 6 innings for the first 5 it looked like he had found something,

KC isn’t good though.

They're a major league franchise. You can only play who's on the schedule, and we need to look for good signs, like the first 5 innings.

Chance Adams just got his first MLB win. They played horribe D behind him.

We're 17 above .500. Given the injuries, that IS amazing.

A few Yankees thoughts:

•Chapman currently has a 1.74 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP and 14 saves. He is only owed $15M per in 2020 and 2021. Entering this year, I thought there was no way he would opt out after the season is over. If he keeps pitching like this, though, I don't see how he doesn't. Some team will be desperate enough to offer more than $30M and two years.

•Gardner is hitting better of late, and it couldn't come at a more opportune time, as I've given up on Stanton being ready in the near future, and I never expected Judge back prior to the ASB anyway. He and Maybin can keep splitting time for right now.

•If Estrada is gonna hit like this, then the Yankees need to take a long, hard look at their plans to extend Didi. It can easily be argued that the Yankees likely already got Didi's best years, and he's about to get a lot more expensive. Wouldn't the money be better used on a good starting pitcher? I love Didi, but sometimes you have to make tough decisions when other (cheaper) options present themselves. Of course, if Didi comes back and doesn't hit, I think it makes sense to offer him an incentive-laden, one year deal for 2020 so he can reestablish his value.

•You can't stop playing any of the infielders if Tulo were to unexpectedly get healthy. Let him continue rehabbing, and if that does happen, trade him to someone in the NL.

Estrada has been very good and almost certainly is for real longer term than Urshela.

Always liked Thairo and still believe in Wade.

Per James Wagner: James Paxton (knee) threw a side & went well, per Aaron Boone. To be discussed, but Paxton is likely to slot back in the rotation this week, perhaps Wednesday. Paxton’s throwing has gone well, per Boone, even if the knee isn’t perfect & he’ll wear a brace.

Frazier is an awful outfielder

At 1:54 PM, Blogger Rich said...

If he hits, it’s mitigated.

Maybe start with an eye exam.

So they say treat every page like the count is 0-2 versus this hitter and the moron Holder throws him a fucking cookie. Asshole.

At 9:11 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

As I said in last week’s megathread, they need better backend options. Green and Holder just aren’t cutting it.

At 4:16 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Betances should be on his way back soon and Green and Holder will have to battle it out for the last spot.

At 6:42 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Forget that. When Betances, CC and Paxton are all back, send them both to Triple-A and give Chance Adams an extended look as the longman.

At 9:24 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I'd rather have Chance than Cessa.

At 9:33 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Cessa has done fairly well this season. Certainly well enough to be a backend reliever.

At 11:09 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Actually after watching low lights, Frazier needs hypnosis. He is contact averse because of the concussion.

At 12:56 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Or something. He is still in a MLB acclimation period and his bat is looking unique. And Cashman sucks at trading for starting pitchers, so if they trade him, NOT FOR THAT.

At 2:01 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I don’t think they can afford to trade any of the outfielders because of how injury-prone the projected starters are.

I agree it’s all about the concussions. He has the speed and athleticism to improve significantly.

At 4:00 PM, Blogger Rich said...

So if Paxton feels more than a little discomfort, what do they do? The reporting is vague.

At 6:16 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Pitch through it with a knee brace. It likely isn’t anything that can be fixed during the season.

At 8:12 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

If Cessa's doing okay, let's move him for international dough.

At 10:08 AM, Blogger Rich said...

That Tanney gets reps and may be kept over Lauretta is nauseating.

At 10:59 AM, Blogger NYTerry said...

The Knicks best course of action is to keep the youth movement, build with draft picks. Prove we can win and then the big FAs will come here ...otherwise, I don't buy it.

At 12:27 PM, Blogger Rich said...

And they may be lucking into Barrett in that maybe he should go higher than three but won’t

At 12:44 PM, Blogger Rich said...

This is Bizzarre

Pat Shurmur says Daniel Jones and Eli Manning are similar:

"They're very calm in their approach, but they're very fiery under the covers"

At 1:11 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Bryan Hoch: Aaron Judge hit off a tee yesterday in addition to dry swings and throwing, Aaron Boone said.

Good news.

At 2:19 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Yeah that’s definitely an injury where you have to ease your way back.

What’s the story with Morales? He has sucked yet he continues to play.

At 8:23 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Boone and/or power above him PH Urshela for Estrada instead of Gardner because he has had a good week? Yet another reason Gardner shouldn’t be on the team.

At 8:46 AM, Blogger Rich said...

This lineup is a freaking joke.

Day game after a night game. New Yankee Draft post.

Yeah but it’s the Torre/Girardi mail-in lineup.
