This Week on the Blog

The reconstituted Yanks came back again last night, the Jets made the Giants look stable, the Rangers hired JD, and the Knicks fell to 3rd in the NBA Lottery. Quite a week. Let's see what's coming up, now.

Yankees: Yanks have had some rousing wins during this period when they could have folded their tents.  Now it's looking like Didi Gregorius is now only weeks, not months, from rejoining them.  He has a sim game early this week, and if that goes well, he's off to the races. Having another lefty slugger in the fold, couldn't hurt. They have still been missing tons of homers with Judge, Stanton, Didi and Andujar out. And they probably lost some when Jorge was out. Andujar's gone for the season but hopefully Stanton and Judge can soon join Didi.

The MLB draft is sneaking up on us.  It will take place for 6/3 to 6/5. I'm sure I'll write more about it, but let's start with this: are they getting any benefit at all from picking Prep Pitchers? There are college pitchers and IFA pitchers popping up all over the season - but no preps, and the Yanks have spent some premium picks and money on these kids. Anyway, they should be looking for College and JuCo arms in the draft and Yankee Bats, whether prep, collegiate or JuCo.

Giants: Heh, heh, heh. The Giants looked pretty stable this week, as they made Remmers official and just went about their offseason business. OTA's start Monday, and we're already hearing the trickle out of how fast Daniel Jones is picking things up. I really wonder if they will let him compete for the starting spot. We'll see what happens during OTA's and the veteran mini-camp. It bears watching.

Rangers: Yesterday, the Rangers brought home JD. This is a perfect fit, and if the goal was to enhance rather than disrupt The Rebuild, I don't think it could have gone any better.  Oh and by the way, Davidson does have the Ranger cred and personal capitol to revisit the rebuild with Hank.  It won't be easy trading Lundqvist, but the Rangers have Georgiev and Shesterkin, and they shouldn't have to sit behind a big contract, and neither should be traded because of an immovable object. Of course, if Hank refuses to waive his NMC, the Rangers should see what they can get for Georgiev, who is once again beefing up his value at the World Championships.

Speaking of the World Championships, Chris Kreider scored his 3rd goal of the tournament early today.  Having John Davidson in the fold, might give the Rangers a leg up in going after Artemi Panarin, but they should only do that if they have traded Kreider and, perhaps, dealt a few more, to really develop meaningful cap room.  Btw, this year Vitaly Kravstov lead the KHL in points by an under 20 year old, He tied for 9th place all time with, none other than, Artemi Panarin. Who could be a better mentor?

And also, the Rangers have signed big Russian D Iegor Rykov to a 2 year ELC. He has an European out, which will allow him to return to the KHL if he can't hack it.  So he's not exactly voting for himself in that clause, but he really emerged this past year, and probably has a good chance of making it in the NHL.

Knicks: The Knicks ended up with the #3 pick in the NBA Draft. Good thing it really is a 3 player draft - at least in the top tier. There are a few other players, who could eventually pop up from this daft, but the safe picks are 1-3. And a team would be lucky to have any of these 3 players.  Zion, Ja and RJ are really terrific kids and have been demonstrably good teammates. Zion is a force of nature. Ja is a deeply soulful and explosive playmaker, and RJ is an explosice scoring machine who can also facilitate offense for his teammates. I think there's just a slight chance Memphis passes on Ja, but, getting RJ would still be a blessing for the Knicks, and they really should NOT trade the pick.

So, there we are, the unlikely Yanks just took over First, the Giants are getting out on the field, the Rangers are taking care of business, and the Knicks are formulating their offseason plan. Hope you have a great one.

(REPOST) Coley Harvey: Giancarlo Stanton has been facing live pitching in Tampa as he goes through rehab for his shoulder. Aaron Boone says he was hit in the knee yesterday, but checked out OK. He’ll face more live pitching today, in hopes of starting a rehab assignment Monday with the High-A Tarpons.

Like I've said before, the analytics team is good at finding players, but it really has no business making in-game decisions. Green in the eighth yesterday? Hicks batting third, when it's clear he needs time to get going? Gardner over Frazier against a lefty — or at all?

Cessa has been better this year but I still don’t trust him.

Frazier hasn’t hit since he returned. I wonder if he’s 100%

New Knicks topic. They're trying to trade Frank.

Green now sucks as a reliever so maybe starting can now be his thing.

At 8:13 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Boone needs to STFU about the value of a second leadoff hitter because Gardner is batting 8th and Frazier 9th.

At 1:29 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Two points:

Green is unusable.

Taking out Frazier, who is really struggling, for defense with a huge lead is dumb. So just send him down.

At 1:40 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Sure is nice winning a battle of the depleted bullpens. Estrada has stepped up since the injuries began to mount.

I thought Green had turned a corner after that inning in Tampa. Guess not.

At 1:47 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Estrada is why Tulo should be waived.

At 2:13 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Agreed. No harm in taking a flyer on Tulo but he’s been passed on the depth chart.

When Stanton is healthy I think you have to send down Frazier and plan to play Stanton in right mostly. I think the team treating Gardner like he’s Derek Jeter on a retirement tour is a mistake, but OTOH, I think you have to keep Maybin on the roster until he shows he can no longer hit.

Having Hicks, Torres and Sanchez playing sure helps.

Stanton homered tonight, Dermis Garicia homered twive in his presence. Dermis had been struggling.

The predictability of the NY media:

Do they realize? (spoiler alert: NO)

*Gardner is done
*Andujar and/or Bird may be permanently impacted by injuries
*Hicks could always carry an injury risk
*Cashman is not good at trading for SP

Frazier will be wearing another uniform come 8/1. Rather hold onto a guy like Florial over someone streaky in Frazier.

Didn’t we already do this “too many outfielders” bit coming into the season? Are we really falling for that again?

At 11:57 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Remember how much he dissed Sanchez

At 12:15 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Look, if Scherzer could be had for Frazier+ I would fly up to NYC just to drive Clint to the airport. But this Too Many Outfielders meme was dumb when it was used as the stated reason for not pursuing Harper, and it's still dumb. The team literally lost its top three outfielders to the IL for extended periods of time. One just got back, another is on a rehab assignment but had to sit last night and who knows when Judge is gonna be ready, much less if he'll even be 100 percent when he's back. (Beltran says no.) Trading Frazier because of a perceived logjam and getting back a middling starter in return would be GM malpractice.

I want to trade Didi

At 12:46 PM, Blogger Rich said...

The LeMahieu signing looks like one of Cashman‘s best, which makes sense he’s a position player not a starting pitcher, I want him to start every day

If this team has another Ellsbury on its hands then *sigh*

At 3:54 PM, Blogger Rich said...

This is all very strange. Not only has Stanton suffered two other injuries while rehabbing the original injury, but Severino also got another injury while rehabbing an injury.

And did you mention Ellsbury’s seemingly endless injury saga.

Something isn’t right.

At 4:37 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I think in Ellsbury’s case he is either physically unable to play any longer, or he no longer has the desire to due to various physical issues that keep popping up. It benefits both players for him to continue to rehab: him so he gets paid, the Yankees so they collect insurance.

Stanton is just baffling.

Obviously the analytics guys need to update their algorithm when it comes to bullpen moves, but it would be nice if the front office would acknowledge that Green and Holder aren’t good options.

By the way, admitted after being brushed back that he wanted to knock one over the fence, so credit to him for maintaining discipline and taking the walk.

At 5:56 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Who would have thought Spring would be so fun given all the injuries?

At 9:48 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

It's a combination of several things:
•The analytics guys have done a good job identifying guys like Voit (got him for Chasen Shreve) or LeMahieu (reasonable contract) who have stepped up. Even Maybin provided a spark for a little while before cooling off.
•Gleyber Torres and Gary Sanchez are hitting like we know they're capable of.
•The farm system has actually given them quality depth with guys like Frazier and Estrada.
•Two surprises in German and Urshela. German has essentially provided the performance expected of Severino, while Urshela has gotten big hit after big hit while playing Gold Glove defense.
•The pitching staff as a whole has been solid. The pen, despite some early hiccups, is mostly good with a few exceptions. Tanaka and CC have been good. So has Paxton when healthy (please hurry back).
•Boone and the coaches seem to be pressing the right button with these guys.

Still, folks have to start getting healthy — Severino, Judge, Stanton and Didi in particular.

At 1:39 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I really like LeMathieu’ game both on offense and defense. Torres is a star. Add in Urshela, who would seem to soon face a major reversion to the mean. Didi should be at 3B if happens and then traded.

Also except for Happ the rotation has been dry good.

The re-signing of Britton and the acquisition of Ottavino not only led to high expectations, but also changed the complexion of the team’s bullpen. They brought with them a new pitch, the sinker. According to FanGraphs, just as recently as 2017 the Yankees’ bullpen only threw the sinker 1.8% of the time, compared to 19.4% this season.

Britton throws it at a robust rate of 89.9%, while Ottavino throws it 40.2% of the time. They have been the biggest culprits in lifting the sinker rate, but two other Yankees relievers have joined them as well. Aroldis Chapman is throwing it more frequently, as he initially started using it last season, and Luis Cessa has been throwing it for the first time in his career.

...

Furthermore, after diving into what Chapman has been doing while using the sinker, it’s incredible to imagine if he uncovered a new weapon. According to Statcast, Chapman’s sinking fastball has an average of 99.3 mph, which is actually a higher average velocity than his fourseam fastball at 97.6 mph. His .060 expected batting average with the sinker is also impressive.

What I found most glaring is that Chapman not only has the highest average spin rate on the Yankees with his sinker, but he has the highest spin rate in all the majors. He has thrown it just 33 times this season, specifically to right-handed hitters, but he might want to explore using it more often.

The bad news: Yankees starting pitcher James Paxton continued to feel pain in his balky left knee during a simulated game at the team’s training complex in Tampa on Friday, he said, according to a report from the Associated Press.

The good news: He was able to pitch though it.

“If I come in (Saturday) with more pain than I had walking in today, then we’ll have to do something,” Paxton said, according to the report. “But, if I come in tomorrow and it feels the same as it did walking in today, then that’s just how I’m going to have to pitch for right now.”
