This Week on the Blog
Alright, here we go. This week we saw the surprisingly plucky, banged up and resolute Yankees keep on keeping on, the Giant wrap up their OTA's, the Ranger brass scout the NHL combine, and the Knicks remain inactive as rumors of a trade down swirled. The MLB draft, that starts Monday, makes this week huge. Let's take a look.
Yankees: the big league Yanks continue to defy expectations and soon they'll have reinforcements. Didi is rehabbing in SWB, Betances as throwing pain free bullpens, Judge is hitting off a tee, and Giancarlo Stanton is resuming baseball activities. Meanhwhile, without these guys or Sevy, the Yanks are off to their 3rd or 4th best start in the last 60 years. Here's hoping they keep taking care of business till the help shows up.
In other Yankee news, the short season DSL is starting, soon to be followed by the GCL, NYPL and Appy League seasons. I thiink they start around June 14. But first, the Yanks must draft again. And that starts Monday.
Yesterday, we talked out how the Yanks might work the pool money. Last year they went slot in 1, then went 400K overslot in 2 and 3. This year, they have 4 picks in the first three rounds, and it will be interesting to see if 2 are slot and 2 are overlot, or 1 and 3 or 3 and 1 or 3 straignt slots or some confabulation of under slot and over slot deals. Impossible to start figuring it out until Monday night. But let us hope, they pick to the draft's strength and avold the DES and perhaps "prep pitcher" traps. Should be another fun few days,
Giants: The Giants have competed their OTA's. That means, this week, they will host their mandatory mini-camp, and then go home until camp starts at the end of July. The good news out of OTA's has been the play of Beal and Baker, the suddenly solid safety situation, the popping up of Davis and Connelly in the LB group, and that Jones has looked better than Eli To wit, Jones to Conrad may be a thing. There, I said it. We'll see what happens at mini-camp.
NB: this year the mini-camp is not the end of the offseason program. It's in he middle of it. Don't know why and just heard about it.
Rangers: The Rangers continued to prepare for the 2019 NHL draft by attending the NHL Combine up in Buffalo. The Rangers do favor the finding of freaks, like Ryan McDonagh (whom they chased down in a trade), Chris Kreider and K'Andre Miller. So it's importatn to their process - but at the same time - they don't care that Kaapo Kakko skipped it after securing gold last weekend in the World Championships. In the NBA they say players who don't attend the combine or leave the combine have " a promise." That is a team has promised to draft them. Kakko has as good as one - or two.
After the Combine, the Rangers will have just over 2.5 weeks to get ready to pick. Two years ago they traded Stepan and Raanta of the #7 pick a day or two before the draft. Let's see if they do something like that again this time. There should be a ton of talent between picks 2 and 20.
Knicks: Thursday, there was an alarming rumor that the Knicks would trade #3 for picks #8 and #10. That would be idiotic and other reporters have said it's not true. Phew. I don't trust this FO, yet, and at this point, I wouldn't be surprised at anything they might do.
So there it is, Yanks have to keep rocking, Giants must get through the mini-camp with a maximum of player D, and a dearth of injuries. The Ranger must keep doing their due diligence and the Knicks should stay away from the phones. Have a Great one!

At the game.
3 poor starts. Hit a wall or the league has adjusted.
He was always going to come back down to earth. Really need Severino to get healthy.
Gary Sanchez being the Kraken again has made a big difference.
What’s his true level?
The HP ump was bad.
The umping has been a problem since 2004, Maybe more.
But this team has character.
If the Knicks trade this pick either for a couple of other lower picks or for a veteran like AD, I may be done with them. Have seen this pattern before of trading youth(including picks) for veterans that have a few years left and jam your cap so you can't build with no youth on the roster. AD can't carry his current team, he will not carry the Knicks with another star and junk.
Finally stick with the youth movement, build around Robinson, Trier, Barret, Knox!
Alternatively:
Ja Morant may not be a lock to the Grizzlies at No. 2 overall in the NBA Draft.
ESPN is reporting that the Grizzlies are "sending out some mixed messages" after previously making it known that they intended to select Morant. Another ESPN report says Morant will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery on Monday, from which the Murray State standout is expected to recover in three-to-four weeks.
Memphis reportedly requested a private workout with Duke's RJ Barrett, who's been considered the likely No. 3 pick to the Knicks. Barrett declined but may reconsider, per ESPN.
I want Barrett and it has nothing to do with that.

Greg Bird (foot), Dellin Betances (shoulder) & Aaron Judge (oblique) are heading to Tampa soon to ramp up their rehab, per Aaron Boone. Giancarlo Stanton (calf) has been running there. Troy Tulowitzki (calf) is pretty much over the injury & his rehab assignment being determined.
I would keep Estrada over Tulo. I doubt they agree.
OK, I was wrong.
When Stanton or Judge comes back then Frazier needs to be sent down so he can work on his defense.
I agree.
But Gardner still has to play way less, and Morales needs to go now.
Stanton and Judge have to get healthy, period. And when they do the Yankees have to stop treating Gardner like he deserves the Derek Jeter retirement tour.
Have Estrada start taking outfield reps in blowout games. Trade Tulo to an NL team once his rehab assignment has concluded.
So Frazier didn’t want to speak to the media. You can’t do that, and Boone, Cashman, and/or veteran leadership need to tell him that in strong terms.
I like this answer by Voit, per Bryan Hoch.
Luke Voit on Frazier: "Every guy has got his back. Everyone is going to make those mistakes. I've made them, Judge has made them, Stanton, whoever. It's part of the game. The hard part is, you're playing here. It's hard because the fans want you to play mistake-free baseball."
I give him credit for saying that, but don’t be your own worst enemy. Own your mistakes.
The Knicks are definitely going to be in the mix for Davis, irrespective of what any of us would prefer. I would draw the line at Robinson and any future picks unprotected to 10.
