This Week on the Blog
So the Yanks had to shut down Betances, the Giants began their pro-day tour, and the Knicks and Rangers kept on tanking. This week should be more exciting, though as the Yanks go LIVE on Thursday to start the 2019 season, we might find out some other stuff, too. Let's take a look.
Yankees: The Yankees are badly banged up heading into the regular season, with Sevy, Dealin' Dellin, CC and Hicks starting out of the Injured List. So, early season rainouts could help this year. Meanwhile, the O looks like it could be something special, even without Hicks to start. Everybody who needed a big ST has achieved one, with the exception of Clint Frazier, who's already been sent down and just needs tons of AB's after missing most of last year. Greg Bird, who was really being challenged has gotten back to taking his walks and going oppo taco. Voit is also hitting the ball hard, but not walking as often, but both guys have gotten "make it" grades and should be up to start the season with Stanton playing more Left and Gardy starting fewer games. Btw, Stanton and Judge now look like Super Destroyers, and they could really carry the team all year, though with Gleyber and Andujar and the other around, they won't have to. Tyler Wade looks like he's making the team and has added what looks like above average OF ability to go with his SS, 2B, 3B and god knows what else package. He's been hitting and stealing and could really help. He's a much more natural basestealer than Gardy ever was, and has close to if not superior speed at ths point. Should be a great season.
Giants: The Giants are in better shape than they were last year at this time. Plus they have 12 picks to use next month which is the most they've ever had since the draft moved to the 7 round format. And some time in their first three picks, they will fix Right Tackle, and once that is done both the O and the D will be instantly improved, as "ball control" will become a thing again for the Giants. I'm hoping they go 6-6 on O/D picks and not try to force a 9-3 of 8-3 D advantage, or anything like that. They still have some things they need on O , like a field stretching WR who can open things up for Saquon. Not a big Wayne Gallman fan, so wouldn't mind seeing another RB brought in. Also, TE is a strength of this draft - so why not? So I'd do at least 1 T, 1 OC-G, 1RB and at leat 1 WR. And that doesn't even factor in QB, which may or may not be a Giant Want come April. So, anyway, the Giants shouldn't go all D in the draft and hitting it as many as 6 times should really improve it, anyway. We'll see. Wonder if they'll make anymore trades.
Rangers: the Rangers are closing in on a bottom 5 season, which should help them in the lottery. To my knowledge, they haven't yet signed any more of their picks or prospects, like the Russians, nor have they signed anymore college or undraft MJHL guys. So they don't want to burn any entry years by having kids take part in the tank to start out. They have fewer then 10 games left, and I think the draft lottery is being held earlier this year.
Knicks: Frank returned last night and they still lost. Mitchell had a big game, and after a few nice games, Knox seemed off. I think they, too, are down to 10 games or fewer in this misbegotten trainwreck of a tank show. They really need to win the lottery. but grabbing Ja Morant with the #2 pick would also be a huge move for the franchise. He would electrify Big Mitch and Knox and whoever else is here. Special talent. So is Zion. Need luck.
So there it is, our one great team will start its season, and our 3 rebuild jobs are all in different states of their rebuilds and need both intelligence and LUCK to return to the promised land. Have a great one!

Never heard of any of them

Is Tauchman going to take Wade’s roster spot? Definitely seems like an analytics inspired acquisition.
Yup that’s what happened
Probably just wanted a more experience outfielder. The real interesting move is what happens when Hicks is ready if Bird and Voit both continue to hit.
This wouldn't have happened if they didn't get LaMaheiu. Taughman is interesting.
I wouldn’t blame Wade if he wants out.
Knox sprained ankle.
Frank sore groin.
We have pretty good read on Knox. He needs to improve the shooting and his motor. A lot of that will probably come with maturity.
Frank is still a question mark two years in. Will he ever learn to shoot the ball even a little? That will determine his career path.
Nick Green returned.
John Mara: Absolute nonsense that sentimentality is why Eli is here.
Mara while McAdoo was OC: I have to laugh when fans say he is the coach in waiting.
He is a proven lying sack of shit.
I didn’t realize Pete Schrager had this much media influence. Or, it could be the information vacuum.
The new PI review rule makes OBJ more valuable.
If they draft Jones in any round I am done with this piece of shit franchise
Just had my annual visit with Pride of the Yankees.
Rich, please relax about the Giants. All worry is praying for things you don't want.
I get frustrated with what I perceive as incompetence, Phil. As an example, the deeply flawed winning while building philosophy. That may result in them getting Rosen instead of Murray. Starting Lauletta in the second half of the season may have prevented that.
As I’ve said, Cashman is the best GM of the teams I root for, by far, but he is lacking overall.
If the Yankees don’t get in this year:
"it would mark the first calendar decade the Yankees failed to appear in a World Series since the 1910s"
I'm certainly mad at the Knicks and Giants, but I'm thrilled that they have high picks. Happy with the Yanks, and the Rangers rebuild.
Also, the Giants lost 8 games by a score or less, and if they use their 12 picks wisely they'll be able to win all of those kind of games.
Phil, I am shocked that you believe that bullshit lie of losing 8 games by a score or less. It's easy to just look at a final box score and act like the Giants were competitive or even close to winning when in reality they weren't.
Jacksonville - Lost by 5. Were down 11 after Eli pick 6 in the 4th and then Saquon had long TD run. We can count this as 1 score loss since the Giants TD wasn't in garbage time.
Cowboys - Lost by 7. Were down 20-3 in the 4th. Giants scored a TD with 4mins left to make it 20-10 and then had a field goal with 1min left to make it 20-13. This game was not close at any point yet "qualifies" as a 1 score loss.
Panthers - Lost by 2. No detail needed, lost on 60+ yd FG. This counts as a close game.
Falcons - Lost by 3. Were down 20-6 with 5mins left and then 23-12 with 2mins left -- scored garbage time TD. This game was never close.
Redskins - Lost by 7. Also down 20-6 with 3 mins left and then we scored a garbage time TD. Never close.
Eagles - Lost by 3. Blew this game, blame ELI 100%.
Colts - Lost by 1. Also blew this game.
Cowboys - Lost by 1. Blew this game versus the backups to the backups.
So all in all, of those 8 games, 4 were not close, 3 were blown and 1 was close but not really (jacksonville).
This doesn't even count that 2 wins were against the terrible Bucs or 49ers by a combined 7 points.
It's amazing that people think this team was "close" to being a winner. Eli hasn't been good for years and Gettleman is out here saying he's still a good QB.
We're a laughing stock.
That third strike to Bird looked a foot outside
Gardner looked old in CF.
Tanaka lifted for Ottavino in the 6th...
He has been great. He can play a huge role if Chapman and/or Betances don’t regain velo.
Now Britton on for the 8th. This is a very deadly pen.
Especially if Chapman isn’t used exclusively as a closer.
New Yankee post
To this point, and maybe it’ll change for the next month, I still find it odd that the Giants got rid of Davis Webb considering what they have a quarterback.
Webb had the perma-yips.
