2018 Yanks: Historically Good?

We have a few days off here, so let's take a look at the Yanks. Through 40 games the Yanks are 28 and 12, good for .700 and run differential is +65, which is no great shakes so far.  But this version of the Yanks started the season under insane weather conditions that hurt the hitting, pitching and fielding.  They've righted it lately, but we're still not seeing a representitive diff number, and should see it exlpode as the weather heats up. The greatest run different in baseball history was +411 by the 1939 Yanks.  That team featured Bill Dickey, Joe Gordon, Joe D, King Kong Keller and Tommy Henrich.  No Babe Ruth, just 8 games from Lou Gehrig, no problem.

Though the Yanks had Joe D and Joe Gordon supply undgodly righty power in a brutal suppresive home park for right handed batters (58 homers between them), Dickey, Lou, King Kong and Tommy were all lefty swingers, as was almost great Yank George Selkirk.  Babe Dahlgren took over for Lou at first and he as a righty swing, too.

Pretty heady stuff.  These guys might actually be the best Yankee team ever, and are certainly up there with the `27, `36 and `98 versions.

Outside of all that bad weather, the 2018 Yanks are fully capable of putting up a comprable season.  They are at +65 and that's without Sanchez, Stanton and Judge getting as hot as we've already seen them. Greg Bird hasn't even played yet, but will join a downhill snowball when he does.  The Yanks have a lot more righty power now than they did then, and the park is more hitter friendly now.

Red Ruffing was the ace of the 1939 staff and went  21-7 with a 2.93 era over 233.1 innings with just 95 K's.  I think Severeno might well beat those numbers, and will probably blow by those K numbers in June.  The rest of the staff lead by Lefty Gomez had a bunch of 12 and 13 game winners and the bullpen lead by Johnny Murphy was lights out.

Not yet sure if the rest of the current staff will end up with double digit wins.  The good news is that Justus Sheffield threw a bullpen today and Erik Swanson'sERA is now .44 in AA and he's old enough to be in AAA and should be. So help is on the way, and I have no idea who the Yanks could trade for that would be both available, and an upgrade.

The Yanks are going to have to get a bit hotter, and pitch a bit better, but they're capable of both, and we should all enjoy an amazing summer of Yankee greatness.

Frazier for Hicks would help, as would keeping Betances to one inning which would limit the innings of the other big three.

As always under Cashman, my concern is a bad trade for a starter.

I also hope they are patient with German.

I see Frazier as the centerpiece to get a good SP come trade deadline.

Need to hold onto guys like Florial, Andujar and Sheffield.

If they do that, they will probably regret it.

Trading for top. starting pitching continues to be Cashman’s weakness.

And you know what, it doesn’t have to matter.

Compare him to Alderson. A few years ago it look like the Mets put together a young dynamic starting rotation for a long time, and the Syndergaard trading was truly great.

But the reason that Cashman leave Alderson in the dust is OFFENSE.

That’s the reason this team can be his great for a very long time.

You have Severino and you add Sheffield and then be patient for some of the minor league pitchers. That’s the way to cement and extend this success.

No more burning prospects and good players for Gray types.

Gardeners 35, Hicks isn’t good. They need Frazier.

Florial left his game with a wrist issue. Hope it's not hamate, like Nick Johnson and Tyler Austin went through.

The SP issue can ultimately be traced back to Hal’s refusal to spend when Lester and Scherzer were free agents.

The only starter I would be interested in is a healthy MadBum. Otherwise, pass, unless it’s for peanuts.

Wouldn’t those trade hve prevented the sell-off that netted a big return from trading Chapman and Miller?

It took almost 20 years to restart the development machine. Now they have to do with starting pitchers what they have done with position players.

It’s harder due to fragility, but they are getting close if they stop the Gray trades.

Not sure if it would have prevented the sell-off, but it's likely prevented playoff appearances and wins. Pitching is fragile, but when all you're giving up is money, a guy like Lester or Scherzer is too good to pass up for the sake of some "get under the cap" plan that seems to change every offseason.

I'm no fan of the pitching-at-the-expense-of-offense plan that seemed to be in place prior to last year, but a bonified ace to pair with their other bonified ace in Severino would be lovely all things considered.

I agree generally but I think it matters when you spend. I’m not sure the offense, unlike now, was good enough then. So their addition at that time might have merely made competitiveness rather than dominance their ceiling.

Now spending on a FA could make sense.

The weekly mailbag at RAB is similar to talk radio, iow, trades trades trades.

The one that is gaining currency with the simplistic segment of the fan base is for deGrom.

Few trades would destroy this franchise’s ability to dominate for years than that myopia.

They kind of overpaid in some of the recent trades, and that's left them with less to use if a trade need arises. Ominously, the current IFA aigning period that started last July the Yanks have signed 40 some odd players, including 3 or 4 that are comparable to Florial. So as much as he looked untouchable, they might feel it's justifiable. Also, if they get a high upside lefty in the first or second round of the draft in two and half weeks, the bets may be off for Sheff.

That would be Ranger-like. Don’t start making trades just when you’re starting to get development right. Although, a big portion of the talk radio mindset peeps just want a name.

Florial’s K rates make him far from a sure thing, but OTOH, they may need as many CF options as they can get. As always, it’ll depend on the return.

Need to sell high on guys when you can.

Cant keep them all as they won't all pan out.

Montero was a good example before he fizzled out.

Thing is, an argument could be made they sold poorly on Montero. So it needs to be for the right piece. No more Gray types.

George King: Yankees stud prospect Estevan Florial will be out until August due to hamate surgery.
