This Week on the Blog

Here we go. Pitchers and catchers report on Tuesday, but a lot of the kids are already in Tampa.  The Giants still need an OC and QB coach.  The Knicks lost their best player and made some so what? trades at the deadline, and a big deadline looms for the Rangers. But, first thing's first:

Yankees!  Our beloved Yanks, who came within a game of making the world series last season, are BACK! Does the heart good.  Oh, and they picked up Giancarlo Stanton for relative peanuts. The second move never came, so don't be surprised if there is a surprise in the next few days.  This is the weekend where we got ARod.  Regardless, the excitement for the coming season cannot be bridled, so don't try. We're gonna hurt some people.  Let's go, Yanks!

UPDATE: Darvish to the Cubs, so that won't be the possible Yankee surprise.

Giants: The Giants were thought to be waiting on Kevin Stefanski to be their OC. When he didn't get the Vikings' job a few days ago, it seemed like it would be a matter of hours, not days.  But here we sit.  I don't think we've heard anything about QB coaches, but the QB's will have a "room" and it would be good if they had their own dedicated coach, instead of having Shurmur or whoever the OC is double dip.  It'll happen.   The combine is coming up, and it will be important to discover the hand sizes and velocities of all the QB's who might be there at 2.  Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen both showed big hands and good velocity at the Senior Bowl, so we're waiting on Darnold and Rosen.  It would be nice to get the coaching staff finished up before the combine.

Knicks: The Knicks were absolutely derailed with the injury to KP.  They might have made the playoffs this year, and next as they await for the big 2019 free agency year, but without their best player, they are likely to get 2 more chances to build through the lottery.  Thank goodness they still have all their 1's.  I have to wonder if the KP injury forced them to change course at the deadline.  Instead of looking to add a now part for a playoff run, they added two 2's and another pointguard.  They are once again lopsided, but now it's with guards and not with bigs.  Sadly, they traded Willy Hernangomez, who just last year looked like a long term piece.  But, in doing so, they called up Luke Kornet, who is another lovable and skillsy big man, who actually posted a double double in his first action.  Don't think he has the bulk to ever be a starter, but he looks cut out to be long term leader of the 2's.  The press didn't like Phil Jackson, but he left us with our picks and and did well in the drafts of UDFA periods.

UPDATE:  KP will have his ACL surgery on Tuesday.

Rangers: The Rangers are primed for a teardown at the deadline.  Doesn't seem like Hank will waive his NMC, but they should still have a lot of moves they can make.  Coincidentally, the kids on the farm are looking more and more ready.  Two of the college D's came up yesterday, Pionk and Gilmour, and Pionk even won the Broadway Hat last night.  That's encouraging. AV is not the man for a rebuild, and hopefully, the Ranger realize it.  Filip Chytil and Lias Andersson could be up by March.

So there we are!  Yanks are coming back.  The Giants are still a little undressed.  The Knicks, are lottery bound (and it's a good draft year) and the Rangers are possibly lottery bound as well.  Have a great week, my friends.

Yu to the Cubs.

Yup, so that's not our play.

The plan seems to be to develop pitching from within. The only upcoming free agent pitchers of interest in next offseason’s class will all be 30 or older. I’m not sure it’s worth investing what they’ll want, so getting under the tax now is likely for the sake of buying a bat in 2019.

More and more smells like Machado, either now or next winter..

I used Machado, but if Andujar is ready, why bother? Machado wants to play SS, but nobody knows if he can anymore.

to think Machado, it should have said above.

Aye, if Andujar proves to be as good as the scouting reports are suggesting he could be, Machado makes no sense.

Unless Machado comes over here as a SS...

the concern about Manny playing SS is that he's had surgery on both legs since last he did and may not have the range for the position.

If Manny comes he will play 3B. Didi is here for the long haul.

Andujar will be a good trade chip

That’s a guess though. They could also be realizing that Didi’s approach could present a bad risk-reward as he ages. It would be very smart to trade him before he gets expensive.

So I had read that Hornacek was going to give Jack less minutes, but guess who is starting.

It’s really unacceptable that Jack and Lee are the backcourt for this type of team.

He did bring Frank in pretty quickly.

The French Connection or African Explosion looks like it could turn into something for the Knicks, I think Mudiay had a double double between poiints and asssists, and all the kid guards got to play some as the Knicks hung around. Frank made some plays, but both he and Mudiay have to limit turnovers.

At 5:04 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Mudiay has really good drive and pass skills. That has been rare here. He also takes pressure off of Frank.

Little Michael Ray-ish, now Frank has to get his jumper working, because it should be much better.

Frank has too many out to lunch games.

Guidance?

We can hope so.

I cannot believe Jack keeps playing. F this.

Two Hahn notes:

• Early in the season, Hornacek was giving Ntilikina heavy minutes in the fourth quarter and the Knicks were winning games. But once advanced scouting caught up and teams started applying heavy on-ball pressure against Ntilikina’s suspect handle, Hornacek got him out of those situations quickly.

After the All-Star break, the kid gloves may come off. Hornacek admitted there will likely be changes made to the guard rotation with Ntilikina, Emmanuel Mudiay and Trey Burke (who, by the way, was a DNP again) getting the bulk of the minutes.

“After the break,” Hornacek said, “we’ll probably see those guys play more.”

——

• Mudiay, by the way, played 20:28 and had 8 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, which seems like a pretty good stat line. But he was 3-for-9 from the floor, including 0-for-2 from downtown, and committed four turnovers. There’s definitely some potential there, but one observation is he’s not in very good game shape yet. He fell out of the rotation in Denver, so his game conditioning may not be where it should be, but for a 21-year-old, he looks like he would have a lot more explosion and energy if he improved his fitness level.
