Yanks Farm Stuff

Last night, the promotion and trade (Ben Gamel) depleted SWB RailRiders won the AAA championship by beating the team from the PCL. Jordan Montgomery got the win, and received sparkling relief from Coke and Gio Gallegos, who has turned himself into a top tier reliever.  The job Al Pedrique and the coaches did was nigh on phenomenal.  They lost Sanchez, Judge, Austin, Green, Cessa and others to promotion and Ben Gamel, the IL MVP to a trade for a couple of kid pitchers. Eventually, they also lost Williams and the only real talent they added was Clint Frazier, who by his own admission, was pressing upon his arrival.  Still he had a couple of hits in the championship game and is heading to instructs for his fuller Yankee indoctrination.

I think the AA playoffs are still going on for Trenton and Justus Sheffield has been promoted to pitch for them.

And Kaprielian threw his second BP yesterday, tossing 30 pitches.  So things are progressing.

One area of coming concern is the fact that neither Dietrich Enns, nor Higgy has been added to the 40 yet and both are MLB ready and deserve the promotions.  It would truly suck to lose that kind of talent in the rule 5, so let's hope they get them squared away soon.  Higgy's really important because as Sanchez establishes himself as a premiere power hitter, they'll need someone to play C, and at this point, Higgy's the best defensive C and his offense finally blossomed this year, now that he's past all the injuries.

Meanwhile, wouldn't it be great if the MLB Yanks had a coaching staff that could help them overachieve?

Higashioka is a must for the roster next year. Enns supposedly had fringe stuff; I think the team likes Montgomery more.

Enns has great numbers and they cannot lose that kind of production in the rule 5.

Pitching is their biggest need right now, so Enns is a necessity. Higashioka's future may depend on what they plan to do with McCann, although if they view him as kind of a super sub: a little C, DH, and 1B, they could keep all three. They definitely need to explore Romine's market value over the winter.

I am reluctantly come to the conclusion that Refs needs to be traded for his own good since he's never played second base for them again. Girardi and Cashman want tools and defense. They don't care about plate discipline.

But whatever the negative of that, being able to watch Sanchez's career unfold before our eyes (along with hopefully a few others) still makes this story compelling... as long as they don't burn young players/prospects for fragile pitching.

Sanchez hit 18 home runs faster than any player in the history of the world

He's about to get to 19 first, too.

Really wish Bird was around this season to continue his adjustment to big-league pitching.

They don't walk much, and if you insist on playing Teix, how does he bat 5th?

The Yankees will make a run at re-signing Aroldis Chapman as a free agent this winter, Heyman writes, at least in part due to Dellin Betances’ recent struggles. While Betances’ slump has been magnified by the fact that it’s taken place in late September, he was excellent for the bulk of the time following the Yankees’ deadline sale, pitching to a 0.57 ERA in his first 15 2/3 innings following the deadline and allowing only one run in August. If the motivation to re-sign Chapman is simply to once again create an extraordinarily deep back of the bullpen, that certainly makes sense, but pursuing him in light of three poor September outings from Betances seems rather reactionary when looking at Betances’ body of work as a whole.

Some people want to pretend that Girardi is good a bullpen management. He has overworked Betances two years in a row

I'm in agreement with Lawyer; I don't want them to make a run at Chapman. Betances is a stud and all they need is another option. Clippard/Warren are good enough and there are some young arms moving up through the system that can further buttress the back end.

Chapman is a name, and we all know Hal is gonna throw Levine a bone so he can market someone and "show the fans we're committed to winning." So, signing him is an inevitability.

I was hoping Lindgren could become a dominant lefty out of the pen starting this season. Hate that he's been hurt the last couple of years.

Any Yankee decision-maker who didn't resign over the Headley re-signing sucks.

Playoff chances all but gone and Joe isn't starting Tyler Austin, Robert Refsnyder or Mason Williams. Why, exactly, is Butler at first and Teix is still getting key at-bats?

That's the thing about Girardi and Cashman. They really seem to believe that declining veterans deserve to play over young players unless there is a compelling case to play the young players. And it should really be the opposite. I don't think Gardner and Ellsbury should be playing as well.

Considering that these are his first few major league starts, Mitchell has been OK.

A bit of good news from Josh Norris:
James Kaprielian now on the AFL transactions page and Scottsdale roster. #Yankees

Yes!

Why is Blake parker on the team, pitching in (at the margins) a pennant race?

He's got his marketing name in Sanchez. I still expect Lindgren to be a stud.

Anyone else at first besides Butler and it's a different game. Mitchell shuts them down on the first and rolls.

That bad error set the tone. Butler sucks in the field.

The Yanks were winning with the babies but started to lose when he went back to the vets.

Why play a 28 year old journeyman?

RAB:
Clippard’s the eighth inning guy and he’s going to pitch the eighth inning, but he’s such an extreme fly ball pitcher that using him against the middle of the lineup is always going to be a dicey proposition, especially with his stuff fading at this point of his career. Using Clippard against the middle of the order burned Joe Girardi against the Red Sox last weekend and again Saturday. Hopefully Girardi’s a little more judicious with Clippard’s usage next year and doesn’t simply assign him an inning (lol nope).
