This Week on the Blog
Well it's cutdown day for the Giants, so let's hope they are making the right decisions. Meanwhile the Yanks have suddenly been seeming, to, along with the Knicks and the Rangers have been getting busy. Let's take a look.
Giants: The Giants have to get down to 53 today, which should be easy enough from what we've seen. They also have to keep trying to improve, especially on the OL which is the horror movie we've been expecting it to be. We can talk about the roster as it takes shape over the course of the next few days. I'm hoping guys like Deayon, Milhouse and Coprich make it to the P-Squad.
Yanks: The Yankees called up Jonathan Holder, even though he didn't have to be added to the 40 to stay out of the Rule V. This lead me to start thinking that the Yanks are becoming a meritocracy again, as they were from the 20s to the 50s. And which lead them to cleaning up. They also picked up three more interesting arms and an undersized OF with some pop, in return for Gamel and Nova. Nice stuff. And it should be a really productive offseason if the recent values hold.
Rangers: The Rangers still haven't made their trade for D, but they did promote Chris Drury to AGM from director of player development. He was apparently instrumental in getting Jimmy Vesey on board. We'll have to see how he progresses. Some people have some residual resentment left over from his sudden decline as a Ranger, but he grew up a Ranger fan, so maybe there's some destiny involved.
Knicks: Chad Ford gave them a B- for the offseason. You think Phil cares? I don't either. We just need health from the ex-bulls and development from the young bigs and this should be a really fun year.
Have a great week, and a wonderful holiday weekend.

Packers releasing Sitton if they can't trade him.
Williams another Reese blown pick although I blame his OL failures. I think he can play. Instead their starting RB is over 30 and fumbles when he isn't hurt.
CC may end up being one of the team's better pitchers next season.
Sounds like no real interest in Sitton 'cause they like Jerry.
So far only an undrafted DT has been claimed.
I talk about the Yankees neediest fresh eyes. The Giants need that eve more.
Ref has a hit and a BB. Tools aren't everything.
Judge is really struggling. I am glad they are sticking with him.
Yep. People are making way too much of his struggles. He's always taken time to adjust to a new level.
Sevy bent but didn't break. Nice job.
Settled in that inning. I hope it gives him some enduring confidence.
Joey loves his declining vets and Kay thinks it's great.
I hate that Cone said Severino "has the look of a dominant reliever."
There are many reasons why Cashman's tenure has been laughably bad at developing what he says he values most.
Aborting careers in the pen is high on the list.
Cone may have been a reliever if he was drafted by Cashman's Yankees.

I see beat writers and some fans defending the Giants because they tried to upgrade the OL but couldn't. But when you haven't drafted a starting OL outside of the first two
rounds since Diehl, that is the root of the problem, and as a result, you failed.
Rather have a dominant reliever than a mediocre SP.
Just wait until Cashman unloads the farm for Jose Fernandez in the offseason.
I would rather have dominant position players because they're less likely to get hurt, by far.
And are we really saying at this early point that Severino will only be a mediocre starter?
Cashman's career long inability to develop starting pitchers is the primary reason for their decline. They now have a chance to escape mediocrity with great young position players. Blowing that with a trade before the development process sorts itself out and we find out which ones are redundant would be foolish.
When they could have him for just money in the 2018-19 offseason?
Cashman has to be realistic here. Yes, the team needs SP. But this team is not an ace away from being a title contender. Unless he can unload guys who he doesn't think will amount to much (self-scouting was a strength of Stick's from what I hear), then he might be better off seeing what he has in his prospects.
Now, I would look to sell high on Didi and Castro, if possible because they don't walk.
The other issue is that Cashman has had an obsession with physically big starters with big fastballs who lack pitchability, like Evo and Pineda. That needs to stop.
The only issue with Sev as a starter is his lack of a third pitch. The kid has to commit to throwing something other than his fastball and slider. Until he's expanded his pitches, Cone is right about him in the bullpen.
Looks like Mitchell is getting the start tomorrow.

The problem is that most relievers throw 2 pitches. So if he has to work on a pitch, it should be in the minors.
Just to reiterate, I'm thrilled with the position players. It shouldn't be messed with.
Good about Mitchell.
Wally Matthews:
Brian Cashman says that if Aaron Hicks wasn't on the DL, Aaron Judge might not be in the lineup as Yankees fight for WC spot
This is counterproductive if true. The WC would be a nice bonus but it isn't a realistic option. The rookies need at-bats.
So many things about him are head scratchers
I could be wrong but didn't he say about a month or so ago that Hicks was blocking Judge even when Judge was hot and Hicks was not?
Oops, just caught a little talk radio with Kay. The sit Judge movement is on
Severino had a plus change before he had a good slider. He did a lot of weight work this past offseason and loss the feel for his change. He hasn't gotten it back yet, but it was a really good pitch.
Good point. So he needs to throw it
Austin and Judge. Yay!
Nice job by Didi and Castro v
A thrilling win.
Gardner saved the day with a great play
I turned off the game when they took Warren out. It was like leaving a bachelor party before the stripper showed up.
Tyler Austin does look more comfortable at the plate. I hope they can find a spot for him next year.
I'm really glad Adam Warren is back in the fold - he may be the solution to part of the starting rotation problem next year if the youngsters aren't ready.
I can't wait to see Bryan Mitchell tonight. A strong outing would do wonders for the Yankees staff now that Green is on the shelf.
I guess Gardner made sure the stripper didn't keep her clothes on...
Good one!
I fear that they won't have room for both Austin and Refsnyder next year, unless they can dump some contracts that seem pretty hard to move right now. They have similar potential to be good hitters (albeit Austin has power and Refs is an obp guy) who don't have an obvious position in the field. I'd go with obp on a team that will likely feature several high power & k & low obp guys in the regular lineup (Judge, Bird) plus Sanchez.
Girardi had said there would be a competition between Austin and Bird.
They don't appreciate Refs, especially Cashman'.
We said for a long time that they would be better with kids and we were right.
All the comments we are hearing from the media and even players about Severino in the pen are eerily similar to those about Joba.
Thankfully Yankee officials, Brian McCann and Severino himself have all said they still view him as a starter.
Didn't' we once hear that about Joba though?
McCann!
" "
Austin!
If the Yankees make the playoffs after selling at the deadline it's going to be the greatest thing ever.
Ultimately Hal. We criticize him when he vetoed selling. So yeah.
People who are pretending that the hit on Cam was not as bad as what Beckham did. Sad.
Why are they changing the name?
Pizza Rats, Bridge Trolls in running as new name for Staten Island Yankees
The Staten Island Yankees received more than 2,000 submissions after the team requested new names for the Minor League Baseball franchise. The five most frequently submitted were the Bridge Trolls, the Heroes, the Killer Bees, the Rock Pigeons and the Pizza Rats. The team has said the results of a final voting round during the next two weeks will be binding. [NY 1]
As you watch Austin in addition to the others, it's pretty clear that they are going to have tough decisions to make about which position players to keep and how to deploy them. They shouldn't rush to do that and trade the surplus now. Let it play out over time. They have to get this right.
Agree with Lawyer - this is a good problem and will play itself out.
I agree with LINJ but I doubt that's what they'll do unless they can move 2/3 of Ellsbury, Gardiner, & McCann. From what Casman said yesterday, it looks as if he's expecting to trade Refs and Romine.
As much as I think it's a mistake because of his unique grinding style in contrast to Castro and Didi, I understand why they would trade Refs, and Romine. I'm talking about the really important players. A hitter with the right-handed opposite field power of Austin in this park, needs to be kept
They can trade Gardner and McCann if they want, and I could see both happening because Frazier, and to a leser extent, Higashioka are going to be ready soon. Ellsbury would be really hard to move without a major (understatement) contract subsidy.
Need to cash in on Romine's value as it is high for a catcher. Refsnyder needs to find a position that he is good at.
Austin and Bird should share DH/1B next year hopefully.
Refs contributes whenever he plays.
If that were the case he would force himself into the lineup but his glove is holding him back.
Bob, have not seen Refs play that bad defensively, his base running tonight though leaves much to be desired.
Yeah, I never saw that kind of base running from him.
Defense is so overrated. Ask Jeter and Posada.
I didn't see the first play, but the second was hard luck. He played the ball halfway but, from where he was, it looked as if the ball had been caught, so he started to get back to second. Once he realized the ball had been dropped, he busted it for third but got forced.
Minor league hitting coordinator James Rowson joined the Yankees earlier this week and has been with the team since, reports Dan Martin. Rowson has worked with Aaron Judge a ton over the years. “He’s trying to get comfortable here. Everything is new to him and he’s had his battles before and made the adjustments,” said Rowson. “He’s been through rough times, especially with the punch outs and he’s always come out on the other side. So I feel like he’s going to do that again.”
Rowson's an excellent coach. And I believe Judge will make the adjustments. Btw, Higgy is more than ready already.
Didi's inability to control the strike zone makes me skeptical of his ability to continue to hit as he ages and loses even a litter bat speed.
On the other side of the game, Jeter couldn't have gotten to that ball at any point in his career. Another reason why I prefer offense.
I wonder if any baseball analytics site has ever done a study on how the shift has affected McCann's AVG and to a lesser extent, OBP.
Tanaka continues to be very good.
Refs can't field????
Sanchez coming back strong after a mini slump is impressive.
They tried to IBB Gary Sanchez and he hit a sac fly.
That actually happened.
-Mike K. at work
He said on the postgame that this happened to him like three weeks ago against Seattle and he wasn't prepared for it, BUT he has learned.
