Eovaldi Requires TJ

In a bit of a surprise, Nate Eovaldi has been shut down and will require Tommy John Surgery.  That's a bit of a blow, but the Yanks do have some upper level guys in the minor who can fill in this year and even more that can step up next year.  What the Yanks shouldn't do, during this offseason is sacrifice some of the rebuilt farm due to an injured starter.   That wouldn't be dealing from strength, and their don't seem to be any UFA SP's that will be worth the Yanks indulgence.   This is a bad break for Nate,  but creates a big opportunity for guys like Dietrich Enns, Jordan Montgomery, Luis Severino and others.

I think it removes Pineda from the potential trade chip list and they could even look to extend him.

But yes, when I hear mediots talking about which young players they could trade I get angry. It's too early for that because the kids haven't sorted themselves out, and there isn't true positional redundancy yet.

Of course, only a couple of weeks ago some of them suggested moving Sanchez because of McCann's presence.

So the confirmed starters for next year are CC, Tanaka and Pineda. No chance they don't trade acquire pitching this offseason.

Sure, but it would be one thing to get the best pitchers you can for expendable assets like Castro, Gardner, Headley, Hicks, McCann, and another to prematurely decide whether Austin or Bird, Torres or Mateo, etc. are core or surplus.

Even so there is a pool of potential starters to fill two spots: Severino, Warren, Green, Cessa, Mitchell, etc. I could see looking for a value deal or rolling the dice with what's on hand.

Yes, I think it's likely that at the very least, all but perhaps Warren will compete for a rotation slot, but they may want to hedge with a veteran or two.

The Yankees have amassed a lot of young arms. It's time to see what they've got. The strong records in Trenton and Scranton are testament to a log jam in the minors.

Tanaka and Pineda are veterans. Mitchell, Greene, Severino, and Cessa have major league experience. It's time to fish or cut bait.

Dietrich Enns has dominated the lower levels. Sure, he doesn't have premium stuff but he finds a way to get batters out. He's 25 - either he can cut it in the Majors or he can't. You're not going to find out in Scranton.

Short sample of effectiveness earlier this season notwithstanding, CC is probably a $25m reliever next season.

It was a rare moment for Hal Steinbrenner, the Yankees owner overcome while watching two rookies in Aaron Judge and Tyler Austin each homer in their first-ever major-league at-bats on Saturday.

"I was emotional. It doesn't happen often." Steinbrenner told reporters in Houston Wednesday at the owners' meetings. "I'm very excited about this."

Go to LoHud and look for the article about Austin talking up various SWB teammates, some of whom have resurrected their careers as well.

Enns has been dominant before and after injury. He should get a shot. Low nineties lefty with a good slider and change.

Now Enns is a guy who deserves a shot once rosters expand. He has had a good year and deserves a shot

Btw if any of the Josh Brown stuff is true, dump his ass immediately!

I agree. He didn't even have the decency to apologize. I predict he will tomorrow. Kind of late. He's not important enough to protect.

I don't know how we find out what's true or not between Brown and his ex-wife.

Not with 100% certainty, but unlike Chapman, for example, there was a bruise, yet Chapman still apologized.

Nothing final yet, but hearing it's #NYR or #CHI for Jimmy Vesey. Tavares made a strong pitch for #Isles but they fell short, it appears.

Back to Brown, I agree with you Lawyer... Considering Coach has said he won't tolerate any such ch behavior nor should he, one would think if true he's gone.

At 7:38 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

How do we know what's true?

At 8:56 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

We know that he has a history of DV incidents, and had shown no contrition. That is a suboptimal combination. Fair or not, if this was an irreplaceable star, like Eli or Beckham level stature, it would be understandable for a team to make a questionable decision of support, although obviously suspect. For Brown in a post Ray Rice environment, I don't think it makes sense.

At 9:38 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I still don't know what's true in all of this and at the same time, don't mind cutting him because he's likely to regress and has already caused a stir.

On a lighter note, it's amazing, well not really, how people ask Axisa in his mailbag about trading one of these top Yankee young players or prospects for a pitcher.

I know nothing about the Brown situation apart from news reports so I don't have an opinion.

But I am excited about the Yankees pitching staff and its potential. Green and Sev have shown potential. Enns and Cessa are possibilities in 2017.

But 2018 starts to get interesting. First of all, Jacob Lindgren comes back from TJ. This kid could be an important piece in the future.

Sheffield, Adams, Kaprielian, Tate, and a few others could become viable that year.

And if the Yankees decide to keep Eovaldi, he'd be back from TJ surgery.

All in all, things are starting to get exciting again.

It will be interesting to see how they react to their hitters being so far ahead of their pitchers, against the backdrop of their inability to develop pitchers.

That's why I would like to get the best pitchers I can for the surplus bets on the roster even if it means eating big money.

Headley with some kind of Acilles issue.

Question;

Is Austin a viable 3B option?

No, Austin doesn't play third

F Chad Jenning's for getting my hopes up... ;)

At 10:09 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I'm going to compliment Cashman (really). When he traded for Chapman, he fully acknowledged his bad conduct and explained how he submitted the risk/reward to Hal for evaluation.

What have we heard from Reese and Mara? NOTHING! If anything, they may have tried to cover up the bad conduct, i.e., NYG lawyers allegedly secured the silence of a landlord with damaging info.

At 4:56 AM, Anonymous Phil from WNY said...

Anyone else starting to feel a bit better after Luis Cessa's start last night? If the Yankees have quality starters in Green and Cessa next year, it'll be a major step in the right direction.

At 7:48 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

What the season is about now is hope, right? So yes, his performance, and especially if Green shows some consistency today, provides that.

Sanchez has offset the Beltran loss while being much better defensively than McCann.

Judge has been better than good; Austin has struggled but that's kind of what is expected in an adjustment period.
