More Yankee Stuff

Presumably, an organizations best pitching coach is assigned to their major league team. That is the only level that counts.  Thus it is strange, that yesterday, the Yanks sent down their best pitching prospect thereby denying him access to their best pitching coach. Ponderous.  There's also the idea that if they keep him down there for 15 more days, they gain an extra year of control.  So that will probably come into play unless there are more injuries, like Eovaldi's last night.  Joe, being Joe used 6.2M relievers during yeserday's game, and so today, the Yanks have called up Ben Heller, from the Andrew Miller trade.  He's supposedly a high velocity filth merchant.

In other news, Gary Sanchez is breaking out and dunderhead must play him every day.

Also, the media and Yankee management are making a fricking meal out of this last ARod game story.  I remember when the Yankees had class.  I also remember stuff like this, so this is just more of that.  I prefer the Yankee Class Experience.

They'll probably call up Austin on Saturday, with Judge on his heals.

UPDATE: Eovaldi to the 15 day DL.  Severino recalled.

Is Heller the only call-up? I would have expected at least 2 guys up, with Cessa being one of them.

Heller, by the way, had to be added to the 40 man roster before the Rule 5 draft, so they are just doing this a few months early. Judge also needs to be added.

Who got sent down? My guess is Goody.

Finally, any word on Evaldi?

Remember when we said the team had to be Torre-proofed?

My hope is an influx of young players and some flameouts by some curiously loved bad ones will Girardi- and Cashman-proof this roster for a while, unless they burn too many assets for an established pitcher because they can't develop any...forever.

The A-Rod mess has Amazingly Stupid Randy's greasy fingerprints all over it.

Last night's game underscores the need to have a bona fide long man and someone who is worth more than garbage time. Using your whole bullpen in a 9-inning game is,absurd unless you're playing Game 7, and it's much better if you have a long man who can pitch in extra innings for the same reason.

I'm actually in favor of Sev going back down. When asked why he only threw 2 change-ups out of 85 pitches, he said he didn't have confidence in it. Fastball/slider isn't enough, he needs another pitch. This was clearly evident sitting through the marathon of foul balls before Dustin Pedroia ripped a double to right field. Sev threw some nice pitches but it wasn't enough. If I was calling pitches, I'd have insisted that he throw the change-up.

In Scranton, he gets to develop the pitch without the pressure surrounding the Bronx. If he can master another pitch, he's going to be incredible. I'd rather be patient with a young guy and give him the time/environment he needs to succeed rather than forcing him up to the bigs.

According to Jon Heyman, the Yankees’ “last known request” during Brian McCann trade talks with the Braves was hard-throwing righty Mike Foltynewicz and outfielder Ender Inciarte. Atlanta was apparently willing to eat half of McCann’s $17M annual salary, but they also wanted to give up lesser prospects.

McCann has already cleared trade waivers, and while Heyman says no deal is close, the Yankees are expected to continue listening to offers for their starting catcher. The Braves make sense as a trade partner. McCann played all those years with the Braves, he’s from the Atlanta area, and he’d give them a veteran catcher to lead their young pitchers as they make the transition from rebuilder to contender.

Another lefty OF, and a hard-throwing pitcher who gets smacked around a lot. Just what we need.

That's a poor trade. Unless the Yankees are not eating any salary.

The Yankees option Refsnyder and Goody to Scranton, recall Luis Cessa and newly-acquired Ben Heller

They dont think much of Refsnyder. Probably should trade him before his value hits rock bottom.

Girardi said it was strictly because they need arms in the bullpen. He said it was Ref because they still have flexibility with him and that he'll be back as soon as the mess in the bullpen is fixed.

Torreyes and Hicks are considerably worse, imo, and I'm not sure that Castro is ant better.

Castro is the one who needs to be shipped off somewhere.

So does Wallace Matthews. One really wonders how some people get regular baseball writing beats.

Gotta say it. Gary Sanchez makes me think of Thurman Munson. I can't remember the last time I was this excited about a Yankee player.

The combo of Sanchez/Romine has me thinking of the Munson/Rick Dempsey years. That was a luxury.

I watched Hicks more closely last night and I agree with Lawyer that his hitting has to be completely overhauled. How did he ever move up through the Minors?

Pineda and Sev desperately need off-speed pitches. You can see how batters get the timing on both, then guess on the spin to great effect.

Someone pointed out on another Yankee site that by optioning Refsnyder to AAA for 10 days, he will end this season with 168 days of service time. You need 172 to have a full season. This means the Yankees would gain a full extra year in delaying his FA period.

I am sure this was a consideration in his being sent down.

Had the Yanks made more use of Dempsey, they might have extended Munson's career (of course barring the tragedy that actually took place). If you have a good hitting catcher, you should regulate his time behind the plate so you can catch him when you really need to (i.e. postseason) and he can continue to be a star hitter into his middle and upper 30s. This shouldn't be hard to do if you can DH him 30-40% of regular season games.

Thurm's problem was that as his body broke down, he didn't have the secondary skills - like walks - to maintain value. I think during that last game he was playing first base and looking uncomfortable against the Whits Sox. He was still a young man, but he was sort of washed up.

I'm hoping Higgy becomes the long term back up till Torrens is ready. Not a Romine fan. I also remember Thurm and Jake Gibbs.

Eovaldi to the 15, Severino is back.

I was at YS for Thurm's last game, sitting behind the Yankee dugout a few rows up. My late friend's ex-wife (TMI? ;) ) took a picture of him coming to the dugout, I wish I had access to it now.

Phil -- You're dead on as usual. The way Thurman played the game combined with the number of games he caught contributed to his physical decline. The same thing happened to Bench. I just hope they do everything they can to protect Sanchez from something similar. Cheers. S68

Watching the Rochester Red Wings v Rail Riders. Judge is in the lineup but Tyler Austin isn't. I think we know who's coming up tomorrow.

If they truly want to make a playoff run, Judge to play RF every day. And Sanchez isn't playing tonight. So what's the plan?

OT, on the Giant, this game was the opposite of their exhibition games of recent years. The first team played very well, but the rest of the game obscured that fact. In contrast to prior seasons, when the Giants won the game but their started played poorly.

A concern: the OL depth is non-existent.

As much as things were a roller coaster with A-Rod, he was the most gifted baseball player I'll likely ever watch play for the Yankees. I'm definitely going to miss him.

Last game as a Yankee but I don't think he is done chasing 700 with another club.

I don't remember Thurman playing 1B but I remembered him in the outfield because catching was aggregating a cyst.
