Yanks Trade Beltran for Dillon Tate and Two Others

The Yanks continued their streak of daylight deadline heists today by dealing 2 months of 40 year old Carlos Beltran to Texas for last year's 4th overall pick RHP Dillon Tate as well as RHP Nick Green and RHP Eric Swanson. The big surprise here is Tate.  He was last year's 4th overall pick after becoming a dominant starting pitcher at UCSB.  Earlier in his career UCSB had used him as a reliever, as win at all costs stupid college baseball coaches have been known for decades to do.  Anyway, Dillon was apparently available because his high 90s gas had become low 90s deisel this season.  Some are saying he's been dealing with a hamstring, while a few Ranger fans are saying he hasn't adjusted to the mechanical changes he's been given by Texas.  Who knows? But the Yanks have been good at finding velocity, so let's hope they can find Dillon's. Not too concerned about Swanson and Green because I assume the Yankee scouts had been on both for awhile.  In fact, they had drafted Green out of HS a few years ago.

Nice haul.

Oh and Nova has been dealt to Pittsburgh, details to come.  The details are that the Yanks can pick any two from a group of 8 the Bucks are offering.

I don't know what convinced Hal to finally do the right thing, but whatever the reason was, thank you.

I would also expect some waiver wire trade also, aka McCann

I think Steinbrenner saw all the empty seats already, what is the loss. They likely already sold the seats already. Because of these trades, they'll be ALOT of excitement/hope next year selling seats, plus he has alot less salary to pay out.

This is the first time UNDER A STEINBRENNER that we've sold for anything much more than salary relief at the deadline.

Nova dealt for the famous player to be named later. Cashman probably dropped him for likely a conditional player based on performance ... or just wanted to get rid of him and let Pittsburgh give us a list of players later, Cashman just wanted him off the roster. ...

unfortunately the only salary obligation they got off the books for next year was money well spent on Miller, so the deals really didn't help on the 189 front for next year (might have hurt it a little since Miller might be replaced by a more expensive Chapman). Hopefully they can find something for McCann & Gardner at some point, but the payroll restrictions still will be a thing next year.

We lose CC and Tex off the books, don't we?

Just Teix

Steve, You likely have Judge replacing Beltran and Bird replacing Tex. That's close to $35 M savings, huge savings towards the 189. Young players will be given a chance to win the 7/8 innings in the bullpen...Mitchell is likely a favorite to get one of those. So that likely is about another $20M (Miller/Chapman salaries) saved.

Steve:

They sent away Nova, Miller, and will have Beltran and Chapman off the books after these trades. Add in Tex and his expiring contract, and that is roughly 4.5 from Nova, 9 from Miller, 11.3 from Chapman, 15 from Beltran and 22.5 from Tex. That is at least 62.3 million off the books in 2017 that was on in 2016. Add back 4.2 for Clippard, and 2 for Warren and the net savings is some 55 million plus.

I would expect that the Yankees will be major players for Chapman next year. Maybe Beltran on a 1 year deal, but only if they dump A-Rod, and they have the other pieces in place.

Yanks get 2 PTBNL for Nova.

Farm system is stacked. Gardner and McCann can be moved in offseason

Phil;

Back in 1989, they also sold under George. They traded Ricky Henderson for prospects. Plunk and Caderet were 2 of the kids who came back. Ricky was in the final year of his deal, and the word was he wanted out, so the Yankees traded him back to the A's.

sorry, misunderstanding. I was more commenting on salary shed via the trades the last few days. Only the Miller trade involved money from next year being shed. The 189 number still will be a challenge, they are at approx $150 mil in guaranteed money (and that number doesnt include any of the arbitration eligible players like Eovaldi, Pineda, Betances, Didi and a few others). They still need to find a way to get rid of McCann, Gardner or Headley to really have a shot to get under $189.

At 2:05 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think they'll get rid of all three.

At 2:06 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

They sold low on Rickey because George interfered. These are very good risk reward moves. I don't care what they do with McCann but Sanchez has to play, now.

At 2:06 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

MBN: I remember, but I viewed that as them being more mad at Ricke, because none of what we get back was particularly good, and I think we sent them Plunk for Ricky in the first place, along with Jose Rios and more.

At 2:07 PM, Blogger TB said...

I think Headley will be a challenge to move. What does he really offer anymore? not good on D and can't hit anymore.

At 2:20 PM, Blogger TB said...

Let's not forget with all these trades, it likely increases our chance to lose most of our games for the remainder. We could likely get a top 10 (protected) draft pick and a nice International budget allotment.

True, and longer-term the key will be to self-scout well, because at some point they are probably going to trade some of these young players for an established player or two.

NYDN

While the more likely scenario still seems to be parting ways with A-Rod over the winter, a source familiar with the situation told the Daily News on Monday that there's a chance releasing the slumping DH "could happen" before the end of this season as part of the team's ongoing overhaul.

Kind of nice not to actively root against them again.

Lawyer, agreed! though if we lose it's like whatever, better draft spot.

One thing I don't think the Yankees were given credit for in accumulating these prospects, is stockpiling talent via a tiered approach. Some will be ready shortly, while others maybe next year or early the following year. Then you have another wave the following year. Gives you time to scout/develope these players, see who you'd like to keep or trade away for MLB talent. I think some of our best talent is developing in the "A" levels.

My fav is Frazier though...so excited we got him!

At 6:19 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Phil you think McCann the most likely one dealt next? Kay as saying today he thinks they could get rid of Elsbury but for lesser prospects.. I see no reason to keep Gardy either at this point.

At 6:45 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Gardner will be be a 10 and 5 player early next year so Cashman needs to unload him this offseason.

At 6:48 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

If they got rid of Ellsbury they could probably just keep Gardner and play him in center, unless they really want to just shed everyone with a paycheck of consequence.

At 6:54 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

If they're moving Elsberry they are eating money. If Kay thinks otherwise, he's high.

I would move Garder matter what

After reading about Tate and how his stuff has fluctuated I now understand why the pen is discussed as a potential destination.

With a AAA of of Frazier, Judge, and Mason, not to mention Gamel and possibly Austin, the Yankees need to unload some OF at the ML level. Cutting Hicks would be easy, but beyond that it will be hard to trade Ellsbury given his contract and declining skills. Therefore, it makes best sense to trade Gardner, who could be desirable to some teams.

I do appreciate that Gardner has always worked hard and is a good guy to have on the team, so I would be sorry to see him go. However, he never learned to bunt, which could have turned him into a .300 hitter, and his based stealing never lived up to its potential given his speed. With Gregorius having turned into a really pesky hitter, he could easily bat second.

One other aspect of this round of trades is that it gives the Yanks legitimate star prospects at every position, with a good number of them likely to be ML ready by the end of next season, if not before. Where they are farthest away is with starting pitching, although that could change drastically with a few positive outcomes out of (a) Severino turning it around, (b) Mitchell or Green making it on the ML level, (c) Adams continuing to progress, and (d) Kaprielian and/or Clarkin at 100% in spring training.

To me, and I did not see this mentioned anywhere around here, these trades, along with the kids acquired, will be the start of straightening out the roster. To many lefty OFs, to many relief pitchers. Not much in the way of 2B and #B, or righty power.

Now, with Frazier added to Judge and Austin, the righty power is coming back. Especially good if these guys can go the opposite field. Judge can, as I have seen, as well as Austin. I would hope Frazier also can.

Sheff and Tate (if he solves his mechanical issues0 give some solid starting prospects, along with Kap and all the others.

Bottom line. Cashman did great. About time ownership listened.
