This Week on the Blog

Alright, the painful monotony of the current Yankee season was broken up a bit by the all-star break.  There is no more relief in  sight.  The Rangers took care of some business, and the Knicks brought back exiled religious figures.  The Giants did nothing.  Let's hope the week brings us good news.

Yankees:  Yanks have started the second half losing two straight to their ancient enemy, and playing trade drama for the papers.  These are clearly not the `78 Yanks and thus better get a trading.  They have a unique opportunity to undo a bunch of past mistakes and speed up the clock on the next dynasty if they can acquire some core pieces.  Meanwhile, down in Pulaski, Blake, Dermis, Wilkerman and Estevan are getting important experience.  Blake had two more hits yesterday and Dermis, the Adam Dunn of the Appy League, hit his 7th bomb. Those are the kind of prospects you should be getting for 3.2M.

Giants: The Giants still haven't addressed the OL.

Knicks: the Knicks are being delightfully well run. They may or may not have one more roster spot to fill, but whatever they do will most likely make sense.

Rangers: the Rangers kicked the McIrath can down the road this week and surprisingly signed last year's third rounder Robin Kovacs.  He's just nineteen, but he gave the other prospects at the prospect camp more than they could handle.  Of course, he was often playing with his Swedish League teammate Malte Stromwall,  who was signed after Ranger scouts so him play over there with Kovacs.    In other news, Pavel Buchnevich, who has a chance to be the Rangers version of KP and OBJ, began training in America and living with an American family. And they could be making a trade any minute now.  They also have to sign Kreider and Hayes.

So we have four teams that need to do some work in the near term.  I hope all of you get great news in the near term.

I'm expecting multiple Yankee trades, even a blind man sees the need.

The quality of them is another matter.

Small is the new big...

"It's difficult because you need that big bat in the middle," Girardi said of Teixeira

Dermis Garcia homers again. Really hope he can stick at third, because that bat looks to actually be big, plus he has good plate discipline.

Twins fired Ryan... I'm guessing not for trading Hicks.

Lawyer;

Personally, I am not too concerned about what the Yankees get back in trades these next few weeks, as long as they get young talent. Solid, young prospects.

I'm concerned for two reasons, as I have mentioned: 1) they seem to like pitchers who have stuff but lack command of secondary pitchers, believing that they can teach it yet they almost never have; and 2) their obsession with defense over offense, and a disregard of plate discipline despite both being the cornerstones of the franchise forever, at least until Cashman's decline phase.

So I just don't see the track record of sustained success apart from the ability to spend, and even that has been spotty.

Brassard traded

At 12:30 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I saw that. Opinions?

At 1:15 PM, Anonymous MBN said...

I like it. Brass may have just had his peak the past 2 seasons. 60 points each. I doubt he improves, in fact, I would consider him someone who my level off and slowly start declining in performance.

Mika Z. or whatever his name is, is 23 (5 years younger)and a restricted FA. He makes about $2.65 million, and is playing for a payday. Big guy - 6"3 and 220+, and a righty.

Plus, we get a 2nd rounder in 2018, instead of giving up a high pick. We did give up a 7th in 2018.

I think Ottawa went for the cost certainty (Brass is signed for 3 more years at $5 million each. They did not want to deal with a 23 year old who just cracked 50 points, and has his arrow pointed up.

All in all, I like this. Maybe JT Miller moves back to Center. Or, maybe more moves are on the way.

At 2:10 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

That makes sense. Bouncing back from the shortsighted moves is going to take time, so maybe this is a start.

At 2:41 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I like this move. It is non typical of the Rangers. Selling higher than pennies on the dollar. I also believe that Gorton is full,of it regarding no more moves. Though as any competent GM would never tip their hand.

At 2:47 PM, Blogger TB said...

Think Gorton did not say no more moves, he said he would not say he'd be making moves even if he had stuff on the verge of happening .. or something to that effect. I LOVE this trade..

At 6:00 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

There's been a new article on the Brassard trade for hours.

At 9:05 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The three players I think are both tradeable and need to be traded most are: Miller, Beltran, Tanaka, and Gardner. I would like Chapman to either be traded, extended, or traded and re-signed.

I don't think they have the balls or foresight to trade Tanaka.

Obviously, if you can get anything of value for Headley, Nova, Castro, CC, and Texi, then by all means do it.

Evo and Pineda, only if it's at near what I would call annualized value.

Ellsbury almost certainly can't be moved player for player.

At 3:16 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

It really sounds like Yankees have an opportunity to get some great pieces, if Cashman is finally smart enough to pick the right ones.

At 4:46 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Chad Green was held out of his start tonight. Pineda is scheduled to pitch tomorrow. This might be starting.

At 5:29 PM, Anonymous Bob said...

Good news. Something is cooking. Trade em all

At 6:13 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Doubt anything is cooking. They'll be on a three-game win streak after tonight, and ownership will point to that as proof they're a contender. If anything is to "cook," they need to start losing.

At 6:42 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Even if they think they can stay in it, this team can be in a better position to win now by making a few moves by selling off depth.

At 7:16 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Jack Curry with effusive praise for Refs despite him having no hits tonight

At 5:34 AM, Anonymous MBN said...

I think Green is pitching against the Giants Friday night, so Tanaka gets the extra day. If that's the case, maybe Giradi finally saw the light. It is amazing the difference in stats with Tanaka from 4 days rest vs. 5 days rest.

Literally, like 2 different players. One is Cy Young type, and the other is Sayonara..........

At 6:51 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

That could be, but inany case it's not stainable going forward. So that's why I would trade him in the right deal, in addition to the elbow and opt out issues.

Auto correct to death

Get the best players available regardless of its a pitcher or hitter

At 1:32 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Must lose game tonight.

At 5:41 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Haha, the Yankees are doing just enough to get Hal/Levine to say no to selling. This team is the worst.

At 5:43 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Blowin' it

At 6:34 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

There used to be a radio segment called Idiot's Delight. That's this team.

At 6:54 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

btw, Hicks is comically bad.

At 3:50 AM, Anonymous Bob said...

This team needs to go on a long losing streak starting tonight. Just everyone stay healthy.

At 5:22 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Taking the optimistic point of view, this little run has given them more leverage to make good deals. Even if they think they can compete at the margins, this roster is badly skewed and needs to be reworked no matter what. And then you have the issue of someone like Beltran who can go down at any minute. So we have a little IQ test coming up

Hope Sanchez isn't traded. He is having a good season at AAA. They need to find a spot for him and find a taker for McCann.

At 12:38 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I'm not sure what's more stunning Teix and A-Rod last year or this year. I guess given his age, A-Rod last year. For Teix, probably equal.

At 2:23 PM, Anonymous Stottlemyre68 said...

Sanchez's low K rate suggests that he's matured and is ML ready. They should use the second half to work him into the bigs. He could catch some and DH some and get plenty of ABs.

At 2:30 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

If he's not up after the trade deadline, this franchise is lost

At 3:51 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/report-yankees-have-thought-about-cutting-a-rod-and-mark-teixeira/

According to Jon Heyman, if the Yankees do sell at the deadline, that could set off a domino effect that ends with multiple well-paid veterans getting the boot:
Some New York Yankees people have discussed whether, if they decide to sell, they might consider releasing great veterans Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez to get on with the rebuild.

At 5:42 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

If it happens, it relates to what I have wondered about. It's so out of character for them to trust young players, especially their own.

This lost season affords them the chance to try a reset without any real consequences.

The key will be if they stick with it over the offseason if a lot of young players really struggle.

But most importantly, if they even attempt it, it's a big plus for fans who want a large scale youth movement.

If the Giants don't have a dedicated strategy to protect Beckham this season I will be really pissed. Yes, he should control his emotions, but if he is body slammed (or something similar) and no penalty is called, they need to take their own actions

15 pitches for the first 5 Yankee batters. Refs takes a six pitch walk.

Beltran's arm bailed out Refsnyders' miscue. Want to see NY get swept but that was impressive.

Trade Beltran!

Beltran looks 25 tonight.

Even though I've been down on the Yankees in recent years, I am an optimist in life as long as there's even a little bit of reasonable. So, I think you're going to make some trades and evaluate has to be going up

At 7:44 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

reasonable hope

value going up

At 2:23 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Hal met with Al. But a buyout wasn't discussed. Right.

At 3:33 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Fucking Giants. Learn how to field your fucking positions. And learn how to hit bad pitchers while you're at it. Fuck.

Yanks close to trading Chapman but will hold onto Miller.
