More Knicks Stuff

The Knicks have been busy.  Yesterday, while I hope you were all enjoying the holiday, the Knicks were bringing back Lance Thomas, and adding G Brandon Jennings.  Jennings will be the backup PG and probably the 6th man.  When he's right he can add some firepower.  We'll have to see if Horny will overplay Lance Thomas like last year's coach's did.  He's another good defender, and actually took less to stay with the Knicks.  That's sort of incredible.

And the Knicks have kept it going today, inking C/F Wily Hernangomez to a multi-year pact, and coming to terms with Lithuanian F Mindaugus Kuzminskas. Kuz is listed at 6.8.5 and is suppposed to be an improved shooter, who can also slash.  And Wily is offensively gifted with great hands and light feet, and is also a willing defender who needs to be taught the finer points.  Wily is great friends with KP, and that should mean plenty to the Knicks.  Kuz is also supposed to be a great kid.

It's unclear how the Knicks are working the cap, but I guess we will understand on the 7th when they are allowed to announce their new players.

Probably means good-bye to Galloway. They had to renounce his rights to get the new guys here from overseas, Otherwise, I can't see how they did it.

OKC may trade Westbrook. If so, we don't have a fiit worth paying.

Trading for superstars can really set a franchise back, see Melo to the Knicks for example.

Truth.

I hadn't seen this when I posted that but this stuff will continue to be out there:

Today's poll results: Out of 3,300 votes, 79% said to NOT even consider trading Porzingis for Westbrook. #HNHPoll -- @alanhahn

I have never even considered quitting anything in my life, even as bad as the Knicks have been. If they trade Porzingis, I'm done with them. They need youth to build on, not keep trading them away for a couple of seasons of playoffs.

We can get Westbrook as a FA next year.

So Cashman is getting paid all that money so the "owners" can make the choices on trades? He's basically a messenger... that is NEVER a good thing. We are in big trouble if Levine is making these decisions, this cat is clueless on baseball matters..

At 8:07 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

It won't happen, imo. I think the Lakers have the kind of pieces that OKC would want, and none have shown Porzingis' upside so they are easier to move. Plus the Lakers may have less cap restrictions. Finally, Westbrook is good but he isn't top five. So I don't think Phil would trade big for small. Like you though, I don't want to hear it.

As far as the Yankees, Hal or Levine may set the terms of the kind of team they want (tread water or rebuild) but they don't know philosophy or other teams players. I think that's where Cashman has failed. In the type of players he values.

Of Cashman's recent non salary dump enabled trades, only Didi has worked out well, even though he doesn't walk.

Cashman doesn't seem to care about OBP, only defense and pitching. Both Evo and Pineda are crazy inconsistent.

Cashman used to care about OBP.

Meanwhile, if you are lucky enough to draft a KP or KAT, you do not trade them. The Bucks still haven't recovered from trading Kareem.

Mateo suspended 2 weeks for violating team policy.

wonder what that team policy was.....out too late? He's been struggling, wonder if the Yanks are cracking down on bad habits.

Looks like Mateo mouthed off to a team exec...which I think is funny..until I hear he said to drop a player in AA, so it would open a spot for him...

This is a test. Do they trade him because they selectively enforce rules or does he eventually get the chance that Hicks is getting.

Knowing this misguided GM, he asked for pitchers.

Refs tonight. Small yay.

At 1:58 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Well, they do need pitchers, but they need offense first and foremost, and his record of acquiring/signing pitchers has been decidedly hit or miss.

I think it's worse than that.

But only people who are too arrogant or stupid to understand the central impact of offensive Yankee catchers in their history would trade Sanchez.

Refs has the second best OPS on the team, but he bats ninth. Girardi is such a fricking imbecile.

At 5:17 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

If someone can't see what Refs can add positively over Hicks and especially Castro, they need a baseball fundamentals refresher course.

Well that was bound to happen.

Refsnyder was 1-for-1 with a walk and he was removed for Hicks. Sums up this team's management so well.

At least Refs is getting a chance to play and is contributing. The more this goes on, the more solid his place on the team.

I hope that's true but I'm not covinced.

Two notes:

NYDN: Rob Refsnyder got the start in right field Thursday as Girardi chose to play the rookie ahead of the struggling Aaron Hicks. Refsnyder went 1-for-1 with a walk and a sac fly, driving in the second run during the Yankees’ three-run sixth.

“We’ve liked his at-bats the whole time he’s been here,” Girardi said. “I’m going to keep trying to find at-bats for him, because I like him.”

NYP:Aaron Hicks had started 10 of the previous 11 games while the Yankees waited for the switch-hitting outfielder to show something at the plate. Thursday night Girardi started the right-handed hitting Rob Refsnyder in right field and put Hicks on the bench.

“I thought I would give Ref another day and try to keep him going,’’ Girardi said of Refsnyder, who had 16 hits in the last 46 at-bats (.348). He went 1-for-1, walked and had a RBI sacrifice fly.
----

This team struggles to score runs, has a terrible offensive RF and a bad offensive 2B, yet one of the best hitters on the team is a third option. The decline of this franchise in a nutshell. And we don't even hear how bad Castro has been in part because the GM took on a terrible contract.

At 5:44 AM, Anonymous Bob said...

Great defense by both Castro and Chapman to end the game last night.

Want the Yankees to lose so they can sell but that was impressive.

At 7:24 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

So Castro and Hicks as late inning defensive replacements. Works for me.

Begley

The New York Knicks have officially renounced their rights to Derrick Williams, meaning he'll likely move on as a free agent.

While the Knicks could still offer Williams a contract with a first-year value equal to whatever cap space they have left, that appears to be minimal according to Ian Begley of ESPN. Begley also states it will be very difficult for New York to re-sign the University of Arizona product:

"They can offer these players a contract with a first-year value equal to whatever cap space they have left, which appears to be minimal. They can also offer each player the veterans minimum exception. Williams, in particular, figures to command more than that on the open market so it will be difficult for New York to re-sign him."

I don't think Williams fits anymore.
