This Week on the Blog
Okay, the Knicks got a lot done this past week, but our other teams? Not so much. Of course in situations like the Yanks and Rangers are currently in, we should be careful about what we wish for. Neither team can afford to lose any possible trades. And the Giants start back up in 19 Days.
Yanks: This week, Cash admitted he was taking trade calls. It's still not clear whether the Yanks will be sellers this month or once again engage in their young for old buyer mentality. This month literally offers the Yanks a rare opportunity to sell established players they don't urgently need, and replace them with top prospects, to supplement the future and the farm. A few trades have already happened, and I guess we'll see if the Yanks finally engage. And sorry I haven't gotten around to the GCL teams, they've underperforming, so I haven't had the needed impetus.
Giants: The Giants start training camp on July 28th. And they still haven't addressed the OL.
Rangers: The key Ranger RFA all filed for salary arbitration, so we don't have to worry about Kreider or Miller getting offer sheeted. Meanwhile, they haven't made any trades and it's unclear if they're going to. It's sort of ridiculous that they didn't buy out Girardi. As good as he was at his peak, that was now seasons ago. I think they may have another buyout window this summer and they should use it.
Knicks: The Knicks introduced Noah, Lee and Jennings yesterday, after having acknowledged their moves on Thursday. This week they may find a cheap veteran big man or they may elect to stick with KOQ, Willy and Plumlee (whom they gave a 3 year deal with a guaranteed first season). I'll have more to say about what I think the reports have been missing, but I will say, that this Knicks team could have SOUL, like the Knicks of my youth and the `90s Knicks. And that's always a very good thing.
I hope all of you have a tremendous week.

Any update on Judge?
Nope, just that his knee was sore.
Want an update on Aaron Judge's sore knee? So does Joe Girardi. "I've asked about three times," Girardi said. "I know he's having an MRI."
DL
Chance Adams, 6 no-hit innings. We may see him this year.
Mild PLC strain and a bone bruise on Judge's knee.
The way I see it, if he comes back at all this season it'll be a bonus.
Is there an organization more snakebit than the Yankees?
-Mike K. at work
That's not usually a very long recovery.
3-4 weeks. It sounds like he should have come out of the game after the OF play.
The Yankees will likely be at .500 by the end of July (or within a game or two of .500). This will be the biggest test for the FO in a long time. Do they do the right thing and build for the future or keep pretending? I'm going to just assume it'll be the latter until I'm proven wrong.
That's one decision I can't put on Cashman, and if that's the route they go, it would make me think relying on Judge, Sanchez, and Bird as rookies all at the same time will never happen.
Well, I don't think it would be Cashman based on reports that he wanted to trade Cano, but none of us know what really happens in private. What we do know is that the roster is mediocre, their development has been terrible, yet no one at the top ever loses their job, be it Levine, Cashman, or Girardi. And Hal and a good portion of the fanbase are apparently fine with it.
Bird is out for the year. Also, nearly everyone involved in development lost their job or was re-assigned as the entire operation was completely overhauled last year and this. Newman was a VP just like Cash.
I was referring to next season.
I don't think the GM should keep his job given his public statements about his baseball philosophy given that this misguided view is an important reason for their decline.
Things I blame on Cashman: Undervaluing offense, belief that a team should be built around pitching despite pitchers' general fragility, acquiring players who lack OBP skills, continuing to employ the same draft team that has failed to produce a difference-making first-rounder since Jeter and giving bad signings/trades far too big a leash while ignoring farmhands deserving of a shot.
Things I blame on Levine/Hal: The idiotic contend-every-year plan despite it not being realistic with the current roster, signing guys based on their marketability both in terms of being a "name" and showing fans "we mean to compete," not exploiting the IFA market soon enough — especially Cuban players — and not demanding excellence despite being the most privileged pro sports franchise in the entire world.
I despise Levine so much it's tough to root this team, but I don't blame himfor everything that's wrong.
Sherman says they probably won't sell, Olney says they will.
Dodgers considering making Puig available
Selling was always a longshot with this ownership group.
Castro and stuff for Puig.
I think Sherman has been providing price support for the Yanks marketing.
I hope he can provide quality control as well.
Phil -- now that Jones is signed and the draft appears done, how do you feel overall? My sense is that they got the preps they really wanted and knew going in that they were not going to sign most of the ones they drafted. That they also spent big IFA two years ago means that they already have a large crew the same age as the preps.
Where did you see that Jones signed?
Riveraveblues, citing Matt Eddy. Cheers. S68
Okay. So far so good.
Blake Homered and is 3/4 today.
Thanks Phil!
I have been an A-Rod supporter for a long time, probably since Phil and I foresaw the possibility of the Yankees trading for him after Boone's injury when everyone at NYYFans thought we were crazy. And in my case, also because most fans could not or would not view him objectively because they viewed rooting for him as dissing Jeter.
But at this point, it's time to move on and buy him out. He will only take AB away from younger players who need them, and it's not like they have a realistic chance of winning and need his contributions, however small.
Given his indifferent reaction when asked about A-Rod working out at 1B, the GM probably doesn't want him.
From his perspective, he built up a lot of good will last season with his resurgence. Why put that at risk?
I think ARod may have an important role over the next season and a half as an occasional player and mentor to the kids. I'd sort of like him to get into player development when he's done.
Sure as long: 1) he almost never plays; and 2) players who he is competing for ABs like Teix, Beltran, and McCann (if they realize he should never catch are gone, or at least two of the three. With all four, I see him as a net negative roster wise.
Buy him out and make him a minor-league coach.
or GM. ;)
Even Teix doesn't rule out a trade. There is a lot of opportunity if the suits stop being stupid and the GM can somehow execute without bias.
I really hope that Williams stays healthy. If he does, I don't think it's too late for him to show he can help the ML club long-term.
If Williams is fully back, whose place does he take? I hope Hicks's.
Hal and Randy, the dynamic duo to lead the Yankees into never being great: http://mlb.nbcsports.com/2016/07/14/brian-cashman-wants-to-tear-it-all-down-and-rebuild-the-yankees-steinbrenner-and-levine-dont/
Cashman has the best press agent ever. He could, you know, get another job if his hands are always tied behind his back preventing him from making his usual ninja moves. Heh.
Again just to add I despise Levine with every fiber of my being for many reasons having nothing to do with baseball, but also baseball.
