This Week on the Blog
Last week saw the Yanks make a significant trade, the Giants start training camp, the Rangers sign another former draft pick, and the Knicks, just chilling while some of their players got ready for the Olympics. This week has already started off with a bang.
Yanks: Early this morning the Yanks traded Andrew Miller for a big bat and three electric arms. The new acquisitions actually pushed down Torres who they'd picked up in the Chapman deal, and added even greater quality and depth to the farm. So it seems a rebuild is finally underway, and more trades are expected. The run up to these trades was really microscosmic of the way things have been under Hal. Bold and brilliant moves, like these, or the big IFA push in 2014 vs. stupid salary splashes like Ellsbury, McCann and Beltran, which we also saw in `14, as well as ridiculous draft and IFA budgets before there were even rules about such things. We'll see what happens up till the deadline and again at the waiver deadline, but this is a new and better direction.
Giants: Beckham got a cut on his ankle today and BigBlueNation held its breath. We need him desperately. In other news, both Cruz and JPP look like, well, Cruz and JPP, and Jerry is making excuses about the right side of the OL. All of these situations bear watching.
Rangers: The Rangers are still poised for a trade or trades, and it's unclear if they are just haggling, or whether or not their are structural barriers in the FO, like their have been for the Yanks.
Knicks: The Knicks are chill.
I hope we get more great news by the deadline, and that we get no more injury scares from the Giants. Let's go, teams, and let's go, readers!

Moving McCann and Gardner would send the right message almost irrespective of the return.
Agreed.
He's wrong, imo. Play high end kids with a smart forward looking market campaign and people will attend and watch:
Yankees clearly did right thing pulling plug on 2016. But if you thought there were a lot of empty seats the first 4 months of the season... -- @eboland11

I'm not saying record attendance, merely the small beginnings of an upward trend.
Some bullshit never dies. The NYT has documented that both brothers were intimately involved:
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2013/03/31/sports/baseball/yankees-hitched-to-alex-rodriguez-an-aging-star-anatomy-of-a-deal-and-doubts.html?_r=0
But Matthews nonetheless pretends otherwise:
The seeds for the great sell-off -- and the Yankees can call it whatever they like, but if it quacks like a duck, please pass the sauce a l'orange -- were planted in December 2007, when someone in Yankees ownership (read: Hank Steinbrenner) decided to override the recommendation of GM Brian Cashman and reward Alex Rodriguez with a contract extension and a raise.

Everything is more short-termed oriented. Our decision-making process, which is geared from above, we're always in win-now mode. I don't think that's ever going to change.
I've had enough conversations with the (Steinbrenner) family to know that next year's goal is to be the last team standing. So playing on the margins of building the perfect beast over time — like what you see that goes on with the Cubs and Astros — that's not going to happen here, where 'you're willing to lost a ton of games and get a ton of draft picks and live to fight another day, trade off players on a team at the deadline when your team might not look good enough so you go ahead and speed up the rebuilding process by trading veteran pieces to get young prospects so you can utilize in your seasons going forward.
That stuff is not part of the playbook here.
Or not:

Great Trade today by the Yankees.
I imagine an OF of Frazier, Rutherford and Judge in the near future.
Now if we can unload Gardner, Beltran and McCann by tomorrow.... it will be a successful season.
Indians, Rangers, Red Sox and Astros all in on Beltran.
the next key for the Yankees is finishing with a bottom 10 record. I dont buy that they will sit out Free Agency for a 2nd year in a row and really need the protection that they wont lose the best draft pick they will have had in 20+ years.
What is there this offseason worth buying other than a reunion with Chapman?
you never know. Yankees have always been willing to pay steep prices to weaken the division, Bautista / Encarnacion could be OF/DH considerations depending on how far the gut job goes this year. They will likely see themselves needing a middle of the order bat. Even if there is no one worth getting I dont see them sitting on their hands two years in a row in free agency.
They don't need OF, SS, C, 1B. Everything else is upgradable.
Pitching and more pitching
Too fragile to bank. The won their most recent WS's with a very good and patient offense and good en pitching.
Yanks will need arms after 2017 when CC, Pineda and Eovaldi are all free agents and Tanaka will opt out if his elbow holds up. Cashman got some quality arms so far and I am sure he will be looking for more.
I would look at SP, though we have a lot, maybe 3B, probably not 2B because we can convert SS's, and probably catcher. We're not really deep. We have Sanchez, Higgy (who is old) and then Torrens and nothing else.
I agree with Billy's take in the other thread: Acquire the best player(s), regardless of position.
I see the Yanks more active in trades in the offseason. I think there are alot of good young players at AAA (outfielders) not named Frazier/Judge that can be traded for some bridge players to the better prospects are hitting their stride. We can't keep all these players, cash some in (not top 100)... could be deals like Clippard ..
To change it up a lil, the next big date for the Rangers is mid-August(15th?), when Jimmy Vesey the Harvard Captain becomes a free agent able to negotiate with any team. Being the Rangers have not had a #1 pick in awhile, this guy certainly qualifies as that type of talent. He'd be a huge GET for the Rangers!
Something to keep in mind: Some of the bigger-salaried may not necessarily need to be moved today, such as McCann, since they could likely clear waivers.
The reason I want to move McCann now is to play Sanchez immediately.
Lawyer, that is the Yankees thinking with McCann and Beltran. We have a glut of OF prospects at AAA. Time to see if they will turn out to be something in the MLB's.
Maybe Gardner may be going soon too...they are pushing Nova I'm sure ..
I get the feeling we may not see much happen today.
Right, and McCann would probably only waive the NTC for Atlanta. Hal needs to rethink the contract eating thing. He can afford it.
Right, and again, McCann can pass through waivers if they eventually wanna deal him.

Beltran to Texas for Dillon Tate!! High pick from last year!!
the above is not a done deal yet but highly likely as per MLB Network
My point about McCann is that if Atlanta is the only team possible they are not going to get back in the race so that provides no urgency to up their offer.
The passage of time, only forces the Yankees to pay more of the contract in terms of just cutting more checks.
So maybe I'm wrong, but I see waiting as benefiting Atlanta not the Yankees.
Number for overall pick and Feinsand thinks the trade is more than one for one
Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal 39s40 seconds ago
Tate, heading to #Yankees, is a RHP who has a 5.12 ERA in 65 innings at Class A, but has pedigree: Fourth pick in the 2015 draft.
Great risk reward. I love being sellers
it'll be tate plus 2 more for beltran, once completed #yanks #rangers
Sorry, that was a Heyman tweet.
Lawyer ..saying Tate and two others ..
So, someone that started on the Yanks this year is likely to win a WS
Yankees acquired 2 top-5 picks in last 2 days.
Made 3 top-5 draft picks in entire history of amateur draft (Blomberg, B. Taylor, Munson)

This shows the premium teams are willing to pay to win now. I think it's dumb unless you already have a ML roster stocked with young veteran.
I guess Murti doesn't understand that every good starter would be a very good reliever
Dillon Tate might project better as reliever than a starter. Mid to high 90s fastball. One comp I heard--Octavio Dotel. #Yankees -- @YankeesWFAN
via http://cbssportsapp.com
That's his floor if he can stay healthy. Only been a starter for two years.
Good point. I just hate hearing that at this point in his career.

In addition to Dillion Tate, Yankees are also getting RHP Eric Swanson and RHP Nick Green from the Rangers.
Pirates are looking at Nova ...looks like McCann is staying for now...maybe waiver wire trade later?
Gamel up
Lewis Brinson to Milwaukee in Lucroy deal, this is the one prospect above Frazier I would have liked to have gotten but am so happy with Frazier!
Nova gone
Nova to pirates per heyman
McCann would now be my DH
