Yankee Stuff

Brian McCann has cleared waivers and is elegible for a trade.  Hopefully, something can get done here and Sanchez can take over.  There's no point in having three catchers on the roster.   Hopefully, the Braves and Rangers both want McCann.  We'll see.

The ARod ending comes as a surprise, but it seemed likely that they would re-assign him in the organization, and if he chooses to, I think he can really thrive there.  We've been through too much drama with #13, but he has always been great with young players, and could become a big part of the organization going forward if he chooses to put his heart into it.

Also, once Austin, Judge and the others join Sanchez,  and eventually Bird, the Yanks could become the the Bronx Bombers again.  All of those guys, including the True Tyler Austin, have nice to plus pop.

Exciting times for sure.

Girardi has said recently that Austin will be in the mix with Bird for 1B.

I'd trade him and Gardner, unless they can somehow move Ellsbury instead, which I seriously doubt. I would also look into whether an NL team out West would take a flier on Sabathia for a year.

You'd be selling awfully low on Pineda and Eovaldi If you traded them now, but if it opens room for Severino, Mitchell and others to get a shot, I think it makes sense. But you can always hold onto those two going into next season until one or more of them force their way.

It's impossible to believe that any team would take Ellsbury's contract.

If the youth movement is going to flourish every job in ST should be open to competition. If a young player is close to the veteran, the jiob should be theirs.

I wouldn't be surprised if A-Rod pursues 700 with some team.

I doubt the Rangers want McCann.

Also remember, he has some kind of no trade clause. Doubt he accepts any trade except to maybe the Braves.

Mets could really use him. Probably will never happen.

Bryan Mitchell makes a rehab start tonight.

There is no reason to deal Eovaldi. If he can't cut it in the rotation, he can go the Miller route and become a closer. A guy who can bring 100 mph and throw a splitter is a guy who can potentially become a star in the pen.

Pineda is a different story...

That McCann made it through waivers indicates that the main return we'll get from letting him go is extra roster/lineup space and we may have to pay for that privilege. I wouldn't be devastated if they Yankees kept him as a part time C/DH for the time being, which would give plenty of ABs for Sanchez/Romine and anyone else who is ML ready and keep a LH power bat around as well as a spare C so Sanchez isn't under too much pressure as well as a catching mentor. We're now only 3 weeks away from Sept 1.

I don't think McCann's NTC will be an issue because it has to be becoming apparent to him that he will catch very infrequently here.

It's striking how candid and clear-headed Cashman is on A-Rod, because he was on the right side of the issue from 2004, in contrast to his strained comparisons with regard to Hicks (sure, Bradley bloomed very late, but the vast majority of players don't), and his continuing decision to play Castro at 2B, even though both have been poor acquisitions.

How does all of the foregoing not apply to Teix as well?

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (sp?) was declared a free agent. He'll likely wait until October, when he turns 23, to sign so he won't be subject to IFA restriction. Will this be the player for which Hal finally ends the Cuban embargo?

Let's hope they start moving the unproductive types like McCann, Headley, Castro, and Gardner (not unproductive but should be moved) so they have plenty of roster space.

You can't say you are still trying make the playoffs and play Hicks. It is total bullshit.

Just sad

Girardi on A-Rod chants in the ninth: "How am I supposed to react? But I have do what I think is best. I liked the at-bat Hicksie gave us."

They have managed to make a oft-maligned player into a sympathetic figure with this nonsense.

I'm not writing Sev off by any means, but this move highlights that their inability to develop any starters has been the catalyst for almost all of Cashman's failures. But apparently Hal is cool with that.

At 3:32 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Supposedly it's to develop his changeup which, if true, I'm fine with. That does speak to a larger problem though, which has been repeated here: Lack of a major-league ready change in their starters.

At 4:07 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Have they ever taught anyone an effective change?

I'm fine with that though, it's everything else I don't like.

Girardi is acting unhinged about A-Rod. I don't think it's his doing.

Wild game and AR PH for Hicks, which is bizarro poetry.

At 7:39 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Although they can't develop starters for shit, they have magic with a few relievers.

They'll likely re-sign Chapman this offseason, which will give them an excellent pen yet again. Warren may end up being the anti-can't-handle-New-York player when all is said and done.

Always good to see the Yankees blow out the Red Sox, especially when one of their promising kids goes 4-for-5.

At 4:59 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

That reminds me, maybe Hicks can't handle NY

At 5:27 AM, Anonymous Phil from WNY said...

The Pedroia at bat against Sev the other night showed just how much he needs a change-up. He kept making perfect pitches and Pedroia kept fouling them off. As I was watching, I kept thinking that he needs an off-speed to finish really good hitters.

He's going down to develop his off-speed pitches, not because he can't cut it. An off-speed pitch will make Sev unhittable.

I think the Yankees see Hicks as a potential core player. Yes, he's batting .200 but they're giving him a chance to find his game. If he does, he could be special.

At 6:59 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

What do you base that on. Hick's has an awful approach at the plate and has a problem making contact.

At 8:08 AM, Anonymous Phil from WNY said...

Yes, he does but he's got the physical tools to get better.

My guess is that he continues to get time in right field and will stay with the team through the winter but can be easily replaced next year by one of the youngsters in Spring Training if he doesn't get it.

At 8:37 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I would hate to see him block Judge, and if he stays in RF, that's what he is doing.

At 8:46 AM, Anonymous Phil from WNY said...

Agreed but if he pans out, one or the other becomes trade bait. It looks like Cash will have to fish or cut bait based on the rest of this year and Spring training.
