Yanks Send Down Severino, Again

The Yanks are sending Luis Severino back down again to get his secondary stuff working and hopefully to clear his head.  I'd love to see Dietrich Enns get a shot, he's been dominant all year.  Meanwhile, Sanchez, Judge and Austin should be moving up in the order.   Also, let's hope this was McCann's last game in pinstripes.  They need to keep making room.

Sev and Pineda both need to learn secondary pitches. Both are young enough where they have time, particularly Sev but neither is going anywhere without an off-speed pitch.

Agree on Enns - let's see what he can do.

Something has to be identified and fixed in the signing, drafting and/or developing of starters. Maybe an outsider's view would help given how longstanding the issue is.

Agreed. They should start poaching the Rays for coaches/scouts in that regard.

Severino might just be a reliever.

Here's the problem, that's true of almost every highly-rated young starting pitcher who they drafted or traded for.

He's still very young. I think he will be fine. I question whether or not it will be here.

Does the problem result in part from parting ways with Gil Patterson?

Severino got into heavy lifting this past offseason and I think it cost him the feel for his change and slider, which were both flashing plus last year.

Heck, he got swings and misses on his slider of late. In this start, he K'd seven and only walked one. He just got hit hard. Seems like a command issue to me more than anything, plus lack of a true third pitch.

Or is it also because, as the RAB article I posted on the other thread suggested, everything he throws is hard and on a narrow velo range. The difference between his FB and CH is only 6 mph

Interesting about Sec and lifting. I thought he looked more muscular around the neck and shoulders this year.

I wonder if we'll make any trades before the deadline.

I think I read somewhere (and attributed to Heyman) that they were finding no takers for Gardner. My guess is any move of him, McCann, or Headley would require them to eat money, so it's probably up to Hal.

RAB:
Even pitching coach Larry Rothschild admitted Severino’s success last year was something of a mirage. “Last year, he came up when he was on a pretty good roll, which makes a difference. But he got away with some pitches because hitters hadn’t seen him and he executed pitches to a degree — not a lot different, but I think a little bit better,” said Rothschild to Brendan Kuty last month. Those warning signs from last year are showing up in Severino’s performance this year.

The problem with Gardner is that he is a 33-year-old speed player whose speed is declining and who never learned to bunt, which would have made him closer to a .300 hitter than a .270 one. He doesn't have HR power and isn't hitting doubles now that his speed has diminished. So it's hard to see how he would add value to a contending team other than as a defensive replacement, since those teams probably already have adequate defensive CFs. Add that he's owed substantial money on his contract and it's easy to see why nobody wants him.

I feel bad about this because it would be hard not to admire and respect his hard work and hustle over the years. He's been a good Yankee 100%. I like him as much as anybody. I still don't understand how, given his skill set, he didn't learn to bunt in high school, much less in college or the minors.

The other problem is that they locked themselves into two players with virtually the same skillset. Gardner may be cheaper, but if he is tough to move, it's still a bad contract. At some point Hal may have to chow down.

Judge and Sanchez are in the lineup but no Austin, and of course Hicksy is playing.

In what universe would it not benefit the Yankees:

With the Marlins potentially in the market for a first baseman to replace the injured Justin Bour, Teixeira was asked whether he would waive his no-trade clause to head south.

“No,” Teixeira told The Post, after Alex Rodriguez released a statement saying he wouldn’t play again in 2016. “You know, [GM Brian Cashman] and I have talked about it, and it’s not something that I think would benefit me or the Yankees. So no, I’m staying put."

Great win, led by the dynamic duo.

The good news is the Yankees are winning with the kids. The bad news is it took a series in Tampa Bay to make obvious to ownership what was obvious to everyone else. But it happened, and if they make the playoffs with the young guys, it would be hilarious.

Has a Yankee starter had a better outing this season?

LINJ. Tex wants that classic NY Yankee sendoff to a standing ovation. Don't think he'd get anything close in Miami.

Maybe McCann can be moved, Ellsbury anyone? I think Gardner is in the way of a younger player but I'd like to keep him around. A solid Yankee and standup guy!

Green was fantastic. 11K's in 6 innings working with his triple A C, with whom he'd had a sub 2 era.

At 7:55 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Btw, I think Tex is done and just wants to retire as a Yankee. There's sort of big post career value in that.

Green showed the value of changing speeds. Pineda and Sev need to watch a replay.

If this kid can find any consistency, we're looking at a legit starting pitcher.

Is anyone teaching base running in the minors? O'Neill pointed out that Sanchez hadn't taken a good secondary lead on the bunt play where he was forced out at third.

At 5:26 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Girardi, when asked after the game if he trusted Judge and Sanchez in big spots, said he liked their approach, that they won't get themselves out and will take a walk.

GREAT to hear. Seriously!

But there is no way they can ever have seen that in Hicks or Castro. Didi too, but he is showing a very effective hit tool, so maybe he can continue to succeed without controlling the strike zone, at least while he is in his peak years.

But plate discipline should be their guiding principle in all their hitter assessments.

This offense can come quickly, especially when compared to what they have relied on in recent years.

Eovaldi to have TJ surgery. He's done for 2017 and maybe beyond.

At 3:26 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I was soooo wrong about not wanting to trade him.

Sometimes the best time to sell is when you think there is not enough reason to.

Remember when some said that TJ surgery was so good kids should get it as a preventative? Yeah, about that...

Didn't see after the rain delay but Pineda looked great for the first five innings. The two Sanchez dingers were a treat.

If the Yankees bring up Mateo in the next couple of years, I wonder if Didi has a future at 3rd. He certainly has the arm for it.
