This Week on the Blog

Alright, last week was interesting.  The Yanks seem to be making move, the Giants beat the Jets, the Rangers seem pregnant with a trade, and Melo won gold. This week could be exciting.

Yanks: If the Yankees win big again today, will we call this series The Baltimore Chop?  Their lead for the 2nd WC will be just about gone.  Later this week, the waiver deadline will expire.  It will be interesting to see if they move McCann now. Also, on Thursday, rosters expand.  We'll see if they want to move anyone onto the 40 for a call up, or whether they'll just call up the guys who are already on the 40.  Another trade would help the roster crunch.

Giants:  Seems like Coach McAdoo really wanted to just get through these preseason games with as much health as possible.  That's the only way to explain all the draw plays.  Giants will play again Thursday, but that's the annual waiver bowl, as most the guys who play in that game, will be cut over the weekend.  The Giants also have to cut some players before the preseason finale.  And they still haven't addressed the OL.

Rangers: The Rangers are primed for a big trade or two.  They need to improve both their cap position and their on ice defense.  Whether it happens now or later, both the Traverse City Tournament and training camp are on the way.

Knicks: The Knicks seem stable.  I guess training camp will start some time in September.

So the big stuff will be the Yanks and Giants roster decisions, and the big possibility is a Ranger trade.  Have a great week and thanks for readind and posting.

.@JonathanMayo: Blake Rutherford is likely to miss the rest of the Appy League season with a hamstring injury. Could play in Instructs.

If the OL's success or failure really turns on Pugh's presence, they are in worse shape than I thought.

Two months ago, I never would have thought I would be this into the Yankees, a team I barely watched for like four of five years., because they did everything they could not to play young players. I hope this youth thing is their permanent way of doing business.

Tell Joey that CC can meltdown fast at this point of his career.

Today's game, in part, highlighted the very real shortcomings in many of Cashman's trades: guys that don't walk. So sure, Didi, Castro, and even Hicks may get hot for a while, but without the ability to take walks, you lose another means of scoring runs when BABIP isn't working in your favor.

No one will call him on it though.

Reuben Randle cut by the Eagles. Score one for Reese's drafting prowess and the clueless owner who stands by him despite the suckitude in drafting.

On some level, I am sympathetic to Kaepernick's pov, but when he says he will continue to sit until black people are no longer oppressed, I think it's incumbent on him to outline the conditions that would satisfy that standard.

Girardi seems to lack a commitment to grinding. And offers no consequences for those who don't.

Yes, they are co-dependent.

Maybe Sanchez's approach will modeled by some of them.

Schwartz cut but OL sucks so makes sense to sign him.

So none of beat peeps think Schwartz is likely, and sure, he's not great or maybe even good, but as a result of Reese and Mara's neglect he may still be an upgrade. It's stunning that they didn't draft one OL even if homers like Howard Cross fatuously pretend that fans are stupid for having that point of view.

The Giants waived/injured TE Matt LaCosse (knee) and FB Nikita Whitlock (foot). They will revert to IR if unclaimed as expected. WR Myles White and LS Tyler Ott also waived.

Plate discipline aside, I like this lineup.

Pineda has been good...mostly.

According to Buster Olney (subs. req’d), the Yankees have been aggressively claiming players on trade waivers this month. Obviously none of those claims have led to a trade. Olney says the Orioles in particular are looking to add pieces, presumably pitching, but the Yankees have a higher waiver priority and keep blocking the O’s trade targets. That’s usually how it goes this month.

Will work at right tackle.

Beatty is going to work at right tackle and possibly right guard. I was never a Beatty fan but the right side of the line is so pathetic that I'm thrilled to have him back. I still think the best case scenario is Bobby Hart growing into the right tackle spot with Beatty as the swing tackle.

Watched the Yanks last night and really liked what I saw from Tanaka - had a great game plan against the Royals with his off-speed stuff. It was also good to see Judge turn on one.

If Chasen Shreve can find his game again, the Yanks are going to be tough next year. I especially like all of the lefties they're accumulating at the lower levels.

I don't like putting Severino in the pen because with the Yankees, if you are a starter, you can check in but you can never leave.

I'm ok with Severino in the pen - it will give him incentive to develop a third pitch that he's willing to throw. He's no good in the rotation without another pitch.
