Sanchez is the Yankees' OBJ and KP

Wow.  Tonight's Yankee game is just in the sixth (and Swarzak just gave up a three run bomb, so we're back down one), but Gary Sanchez is already 3-3 with two homers and 3 RBI's.  Between Odell Beckham Jr and Kristaps Porzingis have raised our standards for rookies over the past two years, and now Sanchez is turning into the same kind of phenom.  I wasn't sure who it would be for the Yanks -- whether it would be Sanchez or Judge, or whether we'd have to wait on one of the other high upside prospects to go full phenom.  Wonder who it will be for the Rangers.  Strangely, Castro also has two homeruns tonight.   Hoping Judge and Austin can get back on track in the next three innings.

Speaking of the Yankees' obsession with journeymen relievers...

But the NYY flip side is using Hughes, Joba, Betances, etc. in the pen.

Pineda would probably be a great reliever. Should they do it? Maybe because of his extreme inconsistency and physical issues as a starter.

Girardi has received way too much praise for bullpen management. Like Torre before him, he has pretty much had an idiot proof pen... until now.

Heller, who never should have been sent down, replaced Schwarzak, who was placed on the DL.

It's amazing how much damage they let that guy inflict.

I like the approach, but I don't think you could call Castro and Hicks flexible and fluid:

Laudably, the NYY have reportedly told Strawberry they would pay for Gooden's treatment if he wants it. Big if.

We can drop the Rule 5 Draft eligible players into three buckets: definitely going to be protected, possibly going to be protected, and not going to be protected. Usually only the “definitely going to be protected” guys get the early September call-up, and even then it’s not a given. Space on the 40-man roster can get tight. Let’s go ahead and drop the Rule 5 eligible players into those three buckets:

Definitely Going To Be Protected: Miguel Andujar, Jorge Mateo
Possibly Going To Be Protected: Jake Cave, Kyle Higashioka*, Dietrich Enns, Gio Gallegos, Brady Lail, Tyler Webb
Not Going To Be Protected: Dante Bichette Jr., Rashad Crawford, Cale Coshow, Cito Culver*, Ty Hensley, Mark Montgomery, Luis Torrens
* Higashioka and Culver are not only Rule 5 Draft eligible, they’ll become minor league free agents after the season if they aren’t added to the 40-man roster.

Sanchez keeps on keeping on.

And even I have to admit Hicks is hot, but I still hate his approach.

Headley is moping over Torreyes playing. He's got good numbers since May 1...

Tired of Headley, he's 38th in HR's for 3B this year, there are 30 teams. He's playing a Power hitters position, his defense has eroded fast. He blames his bad ABs on getting 3 days off but a guy like Torres can come off the bench from sitting the whole year and bash? He certainly is not "earning" his salary.

I think the youngsters are making everyone better. Tanaka and CC are throwing better - as is Pineda. The team is too far back to make a serious run but it's exciting baseball again.

I'm still not sold on Pineda. I do think the Yankees will keep him around for next year (like they really have a choice?). But I am not convinced he is worth a long term commitment.

Next year, his last before he hits FA, will be a key one in the Yankees system for starting pitching. Aside from Green and Cessa, who are getting looked at now, Montgiomery, Enns and Adams will be under the microscope for possible contributions at the Major League level for deployment as soon as 2018.

Kap is in that group also, but he needs good health.

I agree, although I think like most hard throwing starting pitchers, he would be very good in the pen.

Beyond that, as I have said, Alderson did an incredible job assembling a young starting pitching staff, but look how fragile they necessarily are.

So I hope that Cashman, despite his misguided pitching obsession over the last five or so years, has come to realize that a young dynamic offense is the key to building a baseball team because pitching is so fragile. Afterall, that's what the team he inherited had.

So no multiple player/prospect trades for Sale or anyone else.

ESPN

When it comes to positioning their outfielders, the Yankees literally keep the information under their hats. Before each game, bench coach Rob Thomson, responsible for the outfield defense, gives Gardner, center fielder Ellsbury, right fielder Hicks and rookie outfielder Aaron Judge an index card with precise locations for each opposing hitter.

Those locations are determined by a proprietary computer program developed by the Yankees' analytic squad, headed by David Grabiner. It takes a multitude of factors -- among them the hitter's power, his tendency to pull or not pull the ball, and his career history against the Yankees' pitcher that night -- and spits out a spray chart which places the outfielder in the optimal position to make a play.

It's a "distinct possibility' that Bryan Mitchell pitches for the Yanks this year, Joe Girardi said. Now with @swbrailriders. -- @BryanHoch

I'd like to see Mitchell this year even though he's likely not 100 percent back into form yet.

Sanchez doing what he's doing has been a treat to all of us who have wanted this for several seasons. It's also nice to not have playing time be determined by contractual status.

@YankeeSource
The Yankees run differential is currently at -4. They are closing in on a positive run differential. Finished at +66 last year.

Also, since Aug. 1, it's a +29 run differential for this team.

At 2:30 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

So (maybe not including today, I'm not sure) they have scored 539 runs. Last season, they were 2nd with 764 for the season, but it was obviously at risk of being an outlier because there was no way Teix and A-Rod would be that good again.

At 4:53 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

The bottom line is, they were sellers at the deadline, and doing that while playing the kids hasn't cost them anything in wins — they're still able to market the team as a contender, and now they have a rookie tearing it up who people are going to want to come see play.

It's vindication for all of us who wanted this to happen early on in the season.

Yes, we said going young would make them better.
