Yanks Draft Day One Review

The Yanks had an almost unexpectadly good first day.   It was almost unexpected because guys like Anderson, Quantrill, Kirilloff, Thaiss and Whitley were all off the board before the Yanks were on the clock.  Fortunately, teams making underslot deals with guys ahead of the Yanks forced some great talent down and the Yanks were able to pop presumptive top ten player Blake Rutherford at 18.  That's just good luck.  This kid not only mashed over .500 out here in a very competitive year round baseball climate, but his OBP was over a hundred points higher.   He was literally on base two thirds of the time.  That's ridiculous in any league and at any age.

In round two, the Yanks too Nick Salok, who may save them a bit of money toward Blake, but is also a hell of an accomplished hitter, with walks and plus speed to go along with a great contact tool and line drives.

Both of these guys not only played well for their teams, but they also both played well on their summer teams.  Blake was on the US 18 and under squad that won gold last summer, while Nick was slashing em to a .329 average at the Cape.  The Yanks have had a history of loving college players who excelled in wood bat league, be it at the Cape or in some of the other summer wood leagues, and Nick checked that box.

Both of these guys can also really run.  Blake may lose a bit of his top end as he fills out and gains his man strength, but Solak will probable hold onto all of his.

So it was a nice break from Pitcher/Pitcher, but let's get some good pitchers tomorrow.

Good write up!, I agree good first day and I like the hitter/hitter 1/2. Round 2 pick was likely an overdraft to save some money for Blake, like you said.Hoping for another good day, we need alot of talent in our system.
