More Yanks Draft Stuff

Above is the picture I posted three years ago when the Yanks first drafted Cal Quantrill.  There's a chance they will do it again tomorrow and I would be pretty excited if they did.  Since turning the Yanks down in `13, Cal has gone on to star at Stanford to the point that he was expected to go #1 overall this year - that is up until he missed the season with TJS which he had on 3/20/15.  He's ready to pitch now, and should be able to go this sumer for whomever takes him.  So, if the Yanks do go college pitcher again, this would be a great choice.

If they want to go prep pitcher, I still like Wentz, Anderson and  Forrest Whitley more than Gowdy, who feels like a young Clippard.  If they go college bats, Thaiss, even with positional uncertainty, or Clark, but not Bryan Reynolds who K's way too much, and clearly has a contact issue.  Prep hitters, I'm not sure Trammel or Benson will be around.

Btw, unless it's a lot of smoke, some of these preps really do seem like they want more than the Yanks can confortably spend to sign.

Since it seems like every young pitcher will need TJS, I'm fine with drafting Quantrill. I do, however, hate drafting relievers high, as they did with Lindgren.

Low bar, Yankees suck at making decisions:

Big-money deals that worked out for the Yankees:
Jeter
Mussina
Giambi (for the most part)
A-Rod (initial trade from Texas)
Sabathia (initial signing)
Tanaka (so far)

Teix and the A-Rod re-sign following the opt-out at least helped them win in 2009.

The economics have changed. Spending big now is incredibly risky because FA are so much older. That's why you need to develop, and they have sucked at that. But Oppenheimer and Cashman remain.

Oppenheimer has been good. He didn't impose either the Hal budget or the CBA budget on himelf, and has yet to have a top ten pick in round one.

Their development track record, in terms of drafted players who are playing key roles is beyond bad. The budget and the CBA cannot explain all of it. Regression to the mean would be a massive improvement.

Just when I have been saying how good Evo is, he has two bad starts in a row.

Parmalee has shown a solid glove and bat tonight.

Yep, which unfortunately means he will be slotted into the lineup for the next two weeks while Refsnyder, who actually has starter upside, will be relegated to the bench.

Meanwhile, the Yankees will continue to beat up on weak teams from now til the deadline, which means no selling off tradeable assets at the deadline because they will insist the team is a "competitor." Then, when the calendar strikes August and they face real teams, reality will sink in too little too late.

The draft is tomorrow, but given their track record in the opening round, there's not much reason for optimism. Oh, and Judge is a strikeout machine whom I am beginning to doubt will ever hit MLB pitching.

Thank God I'm an Alabama alumnus and have the football team, which is run by someone who will likely go down as one of the all-time great college football coaches. The way he runs that team -- I.E. actually demanding accountability and doing things like handing over the offense to Lane Kiffin in order to adjust to today's game of high-powered offenses -- is a stark contrast to how the Yankees are run.

Saying something can't explain it all is an assumption, not a fact. The fact is, they have had low picks and no picks in the first round a bunch and they were not allowed to use their financlal muscle at all outside of 2006 and the IFA summer of 2014 and that's all on Hal and not on the scouts. If the Yanks hadn't signed Tex the Yanks were gonna pick Trout. Garrett Cole told teams he would only sign with the Yanks, and then when they picked him, he refused to even negotiate. Those are big deals.

Mike, Judge is 10 for his last 22 with some walks. Don't give up yet.

Oh, by no means am I giving up. But there were always questions surrounding him, and lately I've been more cautious in regard to expectations surrounding him.

Judge has learned to hit at every level so far, so perhaps he's getting the hang of AAA. To the extent that he has learned something from his extended slump, it may actually help him in the majors in terms of being ready for pitchers who rely on more than just good stuff. Obviously the jury is still out, but in my book it's out until someone shows he can do it at the ML level.
