Yanks Win a Girardi Wet Dream
The Yanks just won a game where they were one-hit. Fortunately that hit was a Starlin Castro homer that brought in Gardy, too. This was, of course, a perfectly ludicrous game for old time Yankee fans, but you know Girardi loved it, since he wrote out the line-up. The odds against being one-hit and winning have got to be catostrophically long. But these are a margins that Giradi loves. Fortunately, Eovaldi, and the Nuclear Option (Betances, Miller, Chapman) were all sharp today. Otherwise they would have lost.
It's also important to recognize that Eovaldi is the anti-Pineda. I would guess that going into last year and this year people probably thought Pineda had a better chance of ascending into a top tier pitcher than Eovaldi did, but that's just not what's happening. Eovaldi is showing grit and guts, as well as coachability, and the Yanks should think about locking him up.

Eovaldi should be traded while his stock is high.
He's young and his K rates are going up.
I'd extend him.
At least they know Swisher is done but if Ackley can play 1B, so can Refs.

Source says one of the pitchers the #Cubs are focusing on for possible deal is #Yankees SP Nathan Eovaldi. Nothing imminent.
At this moment in time, every team in MLB looking to upgrade the rotation would want Evo. But given his age, their almost complete ineptitude to develop starters under Cashman, their unique financial position, and a ML roster full unmovable contracts, it would take a Herschel Walker to the Vikings type of trade for it to make sense, and those types of trades don't happen.
But do you trust he's as good as he's showing now? I don't. I do hear your concerns, LINJ, I just don't want them to potentially get roped into a long-term or semi-long-term deal they end up regretting.

My biggest concern, as with any pitcher, is continued health.
It's not like they are going to totally blow this roster up, and if they somehow did, I have zero confidence that Cashman could put it back together given how poor he has been at development, and the limited degree to which the current CBA permits rebuilding through free agency. The ast time they spent big, Cashman spent poorly, and followed that up with Headley.
So given all we know about Yankee management and business model, Evo is exactly the type of player they should be looking to acquire as they reload.
It may be Cashman's best trade when you factor in that he gave up rather than took back salary, the opposite of his usual trades.
They can wait to extend him if they doubt his consistency, but as I said, trading him would require an I foreseeably ridiculous return.

Severino demoted. They're sticking with Pineda for now. I wonder how long they have before he's out of options (Pineda that is)?
Girardi said they may try Refs at 1B. I'm glad he reads this blog.
This offense is beyond bad.
The pitching, by contrast, has been pretty good (bolstered by a great back end of the bullpen), especially since they moved Nova to the rotation. In a way, this is the team Cashman always wanted: pitching-centric, with offense a secondary concern. Unfortunately, he's learning the hard way that, as us Southerners would say, that dog don't hunt.

This right here sums up what is wrong with the Cashman regime. He really doesn't understand the importance of offense, and it shows with how the roster is constructed.
WTH, like vou said, the failure is in the offense. Texiera (my fav Yankee), Headley, Rodriquez have stunk, middle of the order bats. Ellsbury always seems injured. Gardner, average player.

Cashman just does not want to admit his assembled hitters are old and overpaid......because then he'd have to take responsibility.

The real problem is that he has been here too long, and he is so invested in defending his prior bad decisions that it has devalued his good decisions.
Yes, Hal has imposed a difficult dual mandate, but Hal doesn't care about pitching over offense, or defense over offense, and he probably doesn't know what a grinder is. He just wants to win and make money.
This looks like it may finally be the year when Hal consents to being a seller.
As Axisa mentioned this morning, they could get a lot for the three closers, and they can move Beltran and others.
Cashman will get his 10000th second chance to reset, but he will probably rely on Gir.
btw, I'm in Chicago for the first time, and it's very nice, although like too many cities there is a large homeless problem.
The wonderful manager is playing Torreyes over Refs at 2B. Probably cause he's gritty and scrappy and some bullshit.

Refsnyder went 2-for-3 for his first multi-hit game with two runs scored and an RBI, including a leadoff double in the sixth for the Yankees’ first hit against Tigers lefty Matt Boyd and a go-ahead single in the seventh for a 2-1 lead. He also started a double play from second base on Victor Martinez with runners on the corners to end the first.
“Nice night. Nice double play,” Girardi said. “He’s gonna play. I’m not looking for him to play every day, but he’s gonna get his opportunities.”
So he goes from a guy to whom they won't give playing time because of Stephen Drew, to a guy who's "gonna play"?
Is there any more evidence wholesale changes are needed than this?
Castro should move to 3B today. Barring that, what exactly has Hicks shown?
And if Gardner isn't hurt, what's going on with him?
So this isn't the 1998 team blocking Refs.
Play him in right, at first, at second. Just get him at-bats and see if the offense is above-average. Find out exactly what it is you have in him.
Cashman says Refs doesn't have position. If so, neither should he.
No Refs, but he is a really smart manager.
