Yanks Call Up Gary Sanchez

The Yanks "needed" a right handed bat for the next couple of games, so they called up Gary Sanchez.    Both Sanchez and Refsnyder have been on fire for Scranton, so it's a little odd that they're bringing up the one who only plays one position and can DH. It seems like he's unlikely to catch, knowing Giradi and his record with young catchers.

He'll be up for these two games then sent back down so the other underperforming bench players can stay on the roster.

I wish Joey didn't get such a hard-on because Headley got lucky.

Based on viewership and attendance, people don't want to see the players they have.

Sanchez and Refs could be more appealing.

I could be more appealing. Billy Crystal could be more appealing -- at least they'd know they'd be watching for novelty.

Top prospect Jorge Mateo is undergoing a position change.

Mateo, currently playing short for Single-A Tampa has been working out at second base, which he will start playing in games shortly.

“In 10 days you will see him out there,” general manager Brian Cashman said of 6-foot-1, 188-pound Mateo, who will play second for Tampa before an eventual promotion to Double-A Trenton.

The move is being made because Tyler Wade is a highly regarded shortstop at Trenton and is in preparation for Mateo and Wade being on the same team.

Mateo, 21 in June, is dominating the Florida State League. In 30 games, he is batting .350 (42-for-120) with four homers, 22 RBIs, a .406 on-base percentage, a .973 OPS and nine steals in 17 attempts. He swiped 82 bases last year for Single-A Charleston and Tampa.

With second baseman Starlin Castro signed through the 2019 season, it’s possible the Yankees’ infield at some point could be Castro at third, Didi Gregorius at short, Mateo at second and Greg Bird at first. Or Wade, who is hitting .266 (29-for-109), could muscle his way into the shortstop position. Wade, 21, was a fourth-round pick in the 2013 draft.

I don't like it it.

Mateo stolen bsse percentage is awful so far, Also he's lost 40 points on his BA and OPS this week, and I wonder if that has to do with his working out at 2nd base.

I have a tough time seeing cause and effect with his position. I suppose it's possible, but I think the move is premature.

A plus shortstop is the most valuable positional player to have. I wish they would just leave him alone, or simply promote Wade to AAA when they send Mateo up. If this is ultimately about keeping Didi around, it's a mistake, IMO. Gregorius is fine as a cheap placeholder for a prospect like Mateo. He isn't worth shifting Mateo to second.

I definitely agree with the placeholder aspect.

Again as I mentioned on the other thread, I really wonder what new management (in the global sense) could do at this point.

But Hal's comfortable with everything, so...no.

This post from NYYFans sums it up for me:
"Sorry, but it is a big deal because there's no reason to move him right now off SS for any significant amount of time. He's taken a tremendous step forward offensively so now is when you decide a 20-year-old with the ability to play SS who is also your #1 prospect should learn a new position while making arguably the biggest jump in minor league competition? And if, according to King, the org is doing it because of Tyler Wade is just ridiculous. No way that is making a mountain out of a molehill.

And, it's cluelessness to cite total errors this early in his development. Remember that guy Jeter who basically made a million errors when he was in Charleston? Not to mentiom the possibility that his range means he got to a lot of balls most SS's cannot and made errors on plays that some at the position would've watched go by them as hits. Until I see scouting reports from reputable sources that suddenly pull a 180 and state emphatically that, at 20 and in the FSL, he cannot play the position months after they said he could, I'm going to err on the side of another NYY prospect blunder. And if it's due to Cashman's own personal desire to keep his Dutch oven at SS, it's even more laughable."

New management would have to come with new ownership for it to make any significant difference, IMO.

I get that he's 31, but he's actually someone I wouldn't mind them taking a flier on since A.) It's only money, B.) If he does well and they eventually blow the team up (doubtful) he could be traded, C.) It might help the Yankees land his brother, a highly regarded outfielder and D.) It's not like they have any third basemen coming up in the near future.

But I doubt Hal wants to spend any money on a Cuban, and the front office loves Headley, so it's a moot point anyway.

The Yankees and their apologists can point to their mythical DNA or business model or debt service on a publicly subsidized private stadium or the stupid ass fans who we pretend are the majority, but it seems like their real DNA is to always have a horrible contract on the books:

Yankees now without Jacoby Ellsbury a week, and no return date set

It's like they can never be great again because of the great job Stick did. Because but for that nobody would give a shit about them.

Apparently he's hurt.

An injury is one thing, but as I said previously, if they send him down, it shows they don't have the stomach for a true rebuild.

At 7:19 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

That would suck.

I haven't been impressed with how Hicks tracks fly balls.

They are saying mild triceps strain. Green up.

Severino came to camp having put on some muscle. Maybe that was a mistake?

At 6:32 AM, Anonymous Bob said...

Could be a blessing in disguise for Severino to clear his head and come back strong.

Chad Green has a chance to impress in what would be 1 start as CC should be back soon.
