This Week on the Blog

This past week saw some unexpeted hits and good starts from the Yanks, while the Giants signed most of their picks as well as 14 UDFA's and are in the midst of their rookie mini-camp.  Phil Jackson went on vacation while he was presumed to be vetting new coaches, and the Rangers haven't done anything, but they might.

Let's take a look at this coming week.

Yanks: Aroldis Chapman's suspension ends Monday.  Who knows how long it will take him to get ready or how they'll handle him but he's able to play again going forward? The offense has shown signs of waking up, but has also shown it cannot be relied upon.  CC Sabathia had his best start in three years, then hit the DL with a groin, and Luis Severino is still looking for a first great start this year.  Eovaldi looked good today, and they have wasted a lot of good pitching from Tanaka.  I believe Big Mike's ERA is now sub-7.  They need to keep winning or try to sell.  Btw, Slade Heatchott was pulled from his game tonight, and they say it's not for a call up.

Giants: Unfortunately, the Giants didn't allow any media for day 3 of their mini-camp, so there's been no news out of Giants Central yet today.  Presumably, the'll sign Goodson and Thompson, and may make a change or two or three based on the tryout players.  The regular players will join the rookies come Monday for the next phase of the offseason.  And the right side of the OL is still a tire fire.

Rangers: The Rangers are said to be moving toward a deal with Pavel Buchnevich.  That should have happened already.  In the meantime, they may or may not have a first round pick this year, depending on whether AZ wants it now or next year, and for all the traded picks, the Rangers still have not won a Cup.  Also, it wouldn't surprise me if the Rangers, having re-signed Rantaa, try to trade him at the draft.  They blew their back up trade last year, and maybe they want to try again.

Knicks: They're sorta looking for a new coach and sorta not.  The time is coming to build around the Zinger, but it still feels like Melo is planning on staying.  Be that as it may, the best course of action will be to move him before or during the draft.

Here's hoping everyone out there has a fantastic week.  Be well.

I have been wrong on Price to this early point in the season.

Slade left due to issues with his new contacts. Hopefully Phil goes after Vogel or Joerger but I'm losing my patience there.

Price should improve going forward.

Let's hope NOT!!!

His FB velo is 92.

Slade Heathcott recently switched to new contacts but was having problems with them, which is why he left today's game early.

There are at least three players at SWB that I'd rather see in the lineup than the current one for tonight's game.

Agreed. Just a boring team. No stars, and they're not winning, so there isn't much incentive to watch outside of hope for the future.

Apparently, Severino has gotten four runs of support in six starts. That's a big issue.

Severino should be sent down to SWB to straighten himself out once CC come back from the DL.

At 8:21 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Nah, he has nothing left to learn in AAA and needs to adjust to MLB hitters. The team isn't doing anything this year, so it can afford to endure his growing pains.

So if you want to be consistent, Hicks should be sent down, Headley and Ackley need to be DFA'd, Beltran needs to be benched.

But for some reason it's always the kid.

That's exactly why this team is a $200m clusterfuck of roster construction.

Whatever.

Severino was pretty much dominant last night sans a few bad pitches. No reason to send him to AAA.

Btw, Bartolo Colon has more XBH than Chase Headley --- it's may 9th.

I agree with Mike K. Severino will just blow hitters away in AAA. What he needs to learn is how to pitch to smart ML hitters.

BTW Mike I hope your Dad is doing well. That's alot more important. Make sure you spend plenty of time with him.

Strasburg extended

Sherman has a note about possibly trading Eovaldi and Pineda if they fall out of the race. I would trade Pineda in a heartbeat but I think they have to extend an Eovaldi. Obviously, if you're completely overwhelmed, you even trade Derek Jeter in his prime, but chances are you won't be.

I think Sherman uses trade speculation to fill space when he has nothing else to say. I agree with LINJ about Pineda/Eovaldi, but if the Yanks are selling they can get the most mileage at the least cost if they decide they're not signing Chapman. He should be worth more than a first rounder even as a rental to a team that thinks he could win them the WS.

If they want to stick with Ackley fine, but why is his defense not a problem yet Refsnyder's is?

And I'd rather watch Montero pitch than this jerk.

They can still win this despite the starting pitchah.

Castro may be an imbecile.

I don't want to hear another word about Severino and the minors. He will be fine. Pineda will likely always be a tease.

Girardi lets Michael Pineda stay in for sixth. Let's him get a guy on. Then another guy on. Then brings in Nick Goody to face Lorenzo Cain.

This.

Feinsand can be an apologist. But he is spot on here:

Feinsand: Michael Pineda has been disappointment for Yankees

Girardi handled that very poorly.

Pineda has the abiility to get batters out. He just has to figure it out. Not too many choices to replace him from AAA.

At 6:19 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Every pitcher in the major leagues has the ability to get batters out

He may just be a reliever.

At 6:47 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Phil made the point on the Giants thread that maybe new people can develop their existing players better making their past draft look better.

I don't know if that's true but it's going to be tested, and I think the same logic applies to the Yankees from the top down.

At 8:04 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

At this point, Pineda is what he is: simply not a good pitcher.

Stot, been meaning to thank you for the kind words on my dad but have been busy with work. He's currently undergoing immunotherapy. Previously, his chemo shrank the size of the tumor on his liver in half, but then he started developing abdominal pain, so they thought it had spread to his colon. But now they're saying that's actually a sports hernia, which will require surgery. Spending as much time with him as I can.

I realize that it's early and there are some injuries and things can still turn around but come on, they need a new person in charge:

2. Starlin Castro (R) 2B (.293/.339/.457, 0.5 bWAR)
3. Mark Teixeira (S) 1B (.202/.325/.298, 0.3 bWAR)
4. Brian McCann (L) DH (.274/.361/.442, 0.7 bWAR)
5. Carlos Beltran (S) RF (.261/.274/.496, 0.1 bWAR)
6. Aaron Hicks (S) CF (.216/.263/.353, -0.1 bWAR)

I wanted to say Dorothy isn't in Kansas (City) anymore, but he's actually pitch better on the road.
